Hey All,

I have a crazy cool conversion idea I saw over on CMON the other day. So I thought about doing a dreadnought heavy army, let me know what you think. I have 50pts to spare so how should I use them?? I will either paint them as Imperial Fist or Ultra Marines, not sure which opinions wanted!!

HQ:
Master of the Forge w/Conversion beamer - 120pts

Elites:
3xIron Clad Dreadnoughts w/Hvy Flamers, Drop Pods - 540pts

Troops:
2x5 Scouts w/Sniper Rifles, Hvy Bolter, Camo Cloaks - 200pts
1xSgt Telion for one of the squads

Hvy Support:
3xIron Clad Dreadnoughts, w/Hvy Flamers, Drop Pods - 540pts

Total: 1450

So how does it look?

Should I do Imperial Fist or Ultra Marines

What should I do with the last 50 pts, I thought about giving the Master of the forge a bike to zip around the field repairing dreads as needed?

Thanks for any/all input!!

love dread spam, but not really viable in 1,500 points as you seriously lack troops.
a single pie plate could leave you with 1 scoring unit.

i would try and either take 2 scout squads and a tac squad, or 3-4 scout squads.

I could always drop Telion and the Hvy Bolters, for another Unit of Camo snipers?

That would be 15 snipers all together?

I know it's troop light, but I would be able to drop 3 Iron Clad dreads with Hvy Flamers and Meltaguns on the enemy!

any other thoughts?

Thanks,
Chappy P!

I would consider getting rid of all the drop pods and adding 2 HK missiles to each Ironclad. This will give you a first turn alpha strike of 12 krak missiles!!! Then they can just run up to assault the enemy. This will also save you 90pts which you can use to bolster the troops.

Yeah I read that some where on the boards the other day, I forgot who posted it...

That is an idea it would also save me some money as I wouldn't have to buy 6 Drop pods?

Any thoughts about foot sloggin dreadnoughts? Better than dropped dreads? Let me know!!

So with DarthDiggler's idea the List could look like the following:

HQ:
Master of the forge w/Conversion Beamer - 120pts

Elites:
3xIronClad dreadnoughts w/2 HK missiles, Hvy Flamer - 495pts

Troops:
2x10 Marines LasCannon/Plasma Gun - 380pts
(4 Scoring units)

Hvy Support:
3xIronClad Dreadnoughts w/2 HK missiles, Hvy Flamer - 495pts

Total: 1490 what would be a good buy for 10pts?

Let me know!
Thanks,
Chappy P!

Mobility is key with infantry-slow walkers. You have invested too many points in hunter-killer missiles.

Edit: Theres always the option with the above list with changes 1-2 of the dreds to field weapons like plasma cannons or/and multi-melta + TL-lascannons etc - basically very versitile weapon systems with the room to change from whats listed within the point limit.

Thanks for the reply Razerous!

At this point I am just thinking out loud. I haven't set anything in stone yet, that is why I am here to get as much input as possible then make my decision.

All I am asking is which list looks better?

I could do a Hybrid of the 2 list:
HQ
MoTF w/Beamer -120pts

Elites:
3xIronClad Dreads w/Hvy Flamer, Pods - 540pts

Troops:
10 Marines w/Las/Plas - 190pts

5 Scouts, Sniper, Camo, Hvy Bolter

Hvy Support:
3xIronClad Dreads w/Hvy Flamer, Pods - 540pts

total: 1490pts

Again, 10pts to burn, 1 less scoring unit. I could drop the Hvy Bolter from the scouts and the Conversion beamer for a drop pod on the marines? That way I would have 7 pods all together 4 of which would arrive in turn 1. So I could have 4 IronClads in enemy territory by turn 1?

Thoughts??

Thanks,
Chappy P!

If your going the drop pod route.. ideally you want either 7, 5 or 3 drop pods. It makes the best use of the drop-pod assault rules.

For example, half of 7 is 3.5, rounded up is 4 - which get to drop in first turn.

half of 6 pods is obviously only 3, so thats one less dred/tactical squad on the first turn. 5 pods also gives you a 3 drop-pod first turn assault so if you want to save points/invest elsewhere, thats could be a comprimise.

If you do choose to go with 5 pods.. keep 6 drednoughts but have the 6th equiped for ranged combat, namely a TL-lascannon & rocket launcher.

i dont have the marine dex to hand, but whats a basic dead with TL las + missiles cost?
also, how much would that be if it was a ven dread?

was just thinking that you could take 2 fire support dreads to keep with the troops while dropping in 4 ironclads.

140pts base for a TL-lascannon & a rocket launcher which replaces the DCCW. Have a partailly ranged drednought in the backfield while retaining its str 10 DCCW is always a good idea if you wanna have more than one.

Its 60pts to get a vunerable drednought (165 vs 105, all other options costing the same) and for the pleasure you get WS5 BS5 and the venerable rule. Very expensive, would work alot better in a more balanced list.

I've been working on a list similar to this.

Master of the forge 100

Tac Squad X2 340

Ven dread x2 370
Assault Cannon
Heavy flamer/CCw

Dread x2 350
TL Las
ML

Ironclad x2 340
H-Flamer
H-Flamer
HK Missles

Instead of just spamming Iron clads I switched it up with some long range AT, midrange anti infantry, and some CC ironclads. I haven't really thought to run just Ironclads, but personally I like a little diversity.

in which case i would stick to 4 ironclads and 2 fire support dreads (just TL las + DCCW) possibly ven upgrades aswell.

should give plenty of extra anti-tank at range as most mobile armies will keep away from melta fire.

Well, I recently played an RTT at the 1500 pt level with one 10 men Tactical and one 10 men Scout squad.

Well, I won it but the situation once got really grim (vs shooty Eldar that annihilated my troops and I only was able to get a draw).

On the original list, I think you might wanna take the points and put them on more scouts. I'd keep Telion, he can cap a PF sargeant and make things easier for your Ironclads. Also you could do 3/3 Ironclads/Regular, you drop the 3 clads first or if they start on reserve, the regulars first. It should give you 90 points plus 50 you have to buff your troops. Or heck man, why not just all regulars? You could definitively use the points somewhere else.

Ironclads are 13/13/10 and come with extra armor as standard. Maintaining pure ironclad lists means your actually fielding fairly tough vehicles (arguably tougher due to being walkers with the ability to walk through terrain & 'hide & survive' in CC)..

The addition of drop pods adds that much needed mobility. Ironclads doing nothing at range & can be easily avoided. I guess 6 cant but you waste turns not shooting while running up the field. The again 35pts/pod is expensive and perhaps better spent elsewhere. Im sure theres a healthy comprimise.

Well if he uses 5 dreads he'll still drop 3 in one go. Then as he increases points he can add the last one plus tacs in pods to deep strike more dreads in the 1st turn.

Ok, wow...Thanks for the replies!!

Ok hmmm...

A couple of thoughts...
1. Is the conversion beamer necessary? Should I drop it?
2. Would 4 Iron Clads be worth it with 2 long range support dreads backing up the support squads??

So what about this (again I am talking out loud here...)

HQ:
MoTF - 100

Elites:
2xTwin Linked LasCannon/Missile launcher dreads - 280pts
1xIronClad w/hvy flamer, pod - 180

Troops
2x10 Missile Launcher/Flamer marines - 340

Hvy Support:
3xIron Clad w/Hvy Flamer, pods - 540pts

Crap, I was trying to squeeze in 7 pods, but I can't as it is I am 10pts away from another 2 pods!

Would 2 long ranged dreads be a good compliment??

Should I stick to the Iron Clad spam?

I am thinking that 5 pods will have to be enough, with three IronClad dreads appearing first turn?

Thoughts?

Right now I guess my main questions are the following:

1. Troop choice - Scouts or Tac squads?
2. Dreads - All IC's or a mix, but mostly IronClads?
3. Which chapter Imperial Fist or Ultramarines?
4. Is there a description of what a seismic hammer looks like? Or can I have some artistic license??

Thanks for your input guys,
Chappy P!

I would stick with the full complement of Ironclads. I would also take a MOF with 2 servitors to follow behind the cloud of dust that is the 5 Ironclads. The MOF can repair them on 2+ as they go.

MOF with 2 servitors

5 Ironclads

2 10-man troop squads

3 mm attack bikes

2 thunderfire cannons

The T-Fires can reach out and touch any infantry in the game. The MM AB's can hunt LR's or skimmers. Your opponent will suffer if they sit back against you from your shooting and the 5 Ironclads will assault a section of the board with the MOF as repair backup. I like the idea of starting the Ironclads on the table because they will draw fire from the T-fires which will live and do much more damage to the enemy.

There will be a problem against Bloodthirsters.

@ Darthdiggler
That list is pretty scary. Honestly, that's the first one Dread list that really bothers me (my guard are AT heavy, I can't help myself)
But wouldn't it have problems with 'Nids or a bunch of Orks with plenty of PK's?

MC's are the biggest problem for Ironclads since they can't be brought down in combat quickly and their CC attacks pen frequently. NId's would need to be shot up a bit first before assaults. Carnifex's would need to be reduced to 2 wounds to have the best chance of dropping them from one assaulting Ironclads. That can be done with the list.

Orks with Powerklaws are remarkably weak against Ironclads. A Nob powerklaw on the charge has a 22% chance of destroying the Ironclad in that round of combat. Receiving a charge, the Ork Powerklaw has an 8% chance of destroying the Ironclad in combat. Most often the Ironclad ends up holding the entire unit of 30 Boyz in place and slowly whittling it down. 2 or more Ironclads into the same Ork Boy unit will destroy it outright in about 2-3 full turns of combat. We can speed this up by hitting the mob with the Thunderfire cannon before they get close enough for combat. The T-fire will slay a hefty amount of Orks in that one shot and bring the Mob down to more manageable numbers for the Ironclads to defeat in combat and run down quicker.

@Prophet of Dakka: That may very well be my list!!

5 Scoring units
Tons of Anti-Tank
Some nice Anti-Horde
5 Dreads which is nice, 4 of which can come in on turn 1!

I think I have a winner...But I do have one question which no one has answered yet...Which Chapter??

I already have an Ultramarine army which I could add this too and have an apocalypse force

or

I could do Imperial Fist as it fits their fluff a bit better as a siege force...thoughts?

Does this list look promising?

Thanks,
Chappy P!

Well if you go with Salamanders you could try Vulkan later on with all the melta and flamers and still have a theme (I think).

I think Telion in a scout squad to shoot up PF squad leaders could be helpful against Orks and MEQs.

Its a very tight list and 50pts just isnt availible unless you make a major change i.e. remove all the h.flamers & camo cloaks/change a tac squad to scouts/downgrade a dred or two to normal types etc etc

Or Drop the Heavy flamers and conversion beamer, but I don't know if that would be shooting myself in the foot?

I am not a huge fan of the Salamander chapter...

Plus I'll have to post the concept that I have for the dreadnoughts, they will be based on the Robocop Mk 2 plastic model kit

Here is the original maker of the model and what he did, which I found tremendously inspiring:

But I will add more GW bits...

Will add more later, I already placed an order for 2 models and will start a blog soon

Is that Cain from Robocop 2? Looks totally friggin awesome.

Nah, those flamers should take precedence over Telion. He's a nice adition, but you shouldn't alter the core of the list for him. I'm guessing him and another Dread should be the next step in a 1750 list, if you aren't short of points. He's not essential.
