Subject: Gearing up BA assault vets?

Been thinking about a few ways to run a BA list, and it seems that Dante adds too much power to simply leave him out.
since i will be running him then it only makes sense to give him some honour guard to run into battle with, now heres the problem.
i want to run pretty much an all out assault army, in doing so that would mean assault vets would be a logical choice for elites.
how would i go about gearing them up?
here are all the options available for them.
Veteran assault squad - 150 points.
Unit - 5 assault veterans.
Unit type - Jump infantry.
Options:
• The squad may include up to five
additional Veterans for +25 points each.
• Up to three Veterans may replace their
bolter or chainsword with one weapon
from the following list:
- Storm bolter for +5 points each.
- Combi-weapon for +10 points each.
- Power weapon or plasma pistol for +15
points per model.
- Power fist or single lightning claw for
+25 points each.
- Pair of lightning claws or a thunder
hammer for +30 points each.
• Any Veteran may take a combat shield for
+5 points per model or a storm shield for
+10 points per model.
• Up to two Veterans may replace their
bolter or chainsword with a flamer for +5
points each, a meltagun for +10 points
each, or a plasma gun for +15 points
per model.
• Any Veteran may have meltabombs for +5
points per model.
now, with a unit like this its easy to go over the top and make a super unit, but i rather not turn them into a point sink, so ill try and make a rough layout and see what people think or prefer.
5 Assault veterans - 150
2 thunder hammers - 60
1 power weapon - 15
2 meltaguns - 20
5 storm shields - 50
Total - 295 points.
only real concept i had there was for a good mix of shooting + combat.
melta's used for ranged (if it can be called that) tank hunting.
hammers used for killing tanks in CC and any troops that get in thier way.
power weapon simply to add a punch in CC. (was thinking of another hammer, but once again, it eats points)
storm shields - speaks for its self here, they keep the unit going for longer.
ideas: thinking about changing it to this:
5 Assault veterans - 150
1 thunder hammer - 30
2 power weapons - 30
5 storm shields - 50
Total - 260 points.
which would be better?
if none, please feel free to compose your own ideas here.
thanks.

Assault Veterans are good because they get 2 attacks base for only 10 points more than normal vets. If you tool them up, they lose that inherent advantage over standard assault troops.
Just give the sergeant a powerfist and be done.

Think of VAS as the BA list equivalent of Sternguard with wings. They've got some nice options that can allow them to drop into an enemy force, pop off some close range shots with meltas and what not, and either destroy or seriously hurt the enemy force.
Moreover, while the extra attack is pretty nice, tooling them up to the nines makes them extremely costly, in an already costly list, when something like Assault Terminators fits the bill just as easily.

cmagee, termies have limited movement though, which hinders them somewhat.
ive made a jump list now and got that posted.
only problem is keeping the points down, as 5 men are not too strong, keeping these and honour guards cost effective is a nightmare.

I look at VAS as:
+2 meltas / flamers / plasma
+PW or PF
Keep the cost down and the utility up.

for the cost of this unit, you can get 10 VAS, and 2 meltaguns. why not drop another 25 pts on that, give it a fist and call it good.

I run two five man squads, 2x power fist and a meltagun in each. This is the best way to min max this very powerful unit. Throw in Dante and they can beat down almost anything... almost.
