i have to admit, i blew them off hen they were first released, but i bought a box of them on a whim when i was doing a paint restock and i cant get enough of them now. ive gone through 6 bottles of babad black alone, and they are the driving force behind 2 of the 3 armies im painting right now. these things are definatly the diamond in the ruff when thinking of good GW products.

There ain't nearly enough Salvage in this thread!

Don't you mean Badass Black? The washes are probably the best thing GW has done in a very long time. I can't get enough of 'em.

I like them. But, I liked the inks better.

These are slightly faster to use, in that they're designed to go straight onto the minis. That is, unfortunately, their only plus in my book.

I preferred the colour selection that the inks gave me. The green was darker. The red was more vivid. The brown was a warmer brown, and my favourite, chestnut ink, doesn't even have a parallel among the washes.

The inks were considerably more versatile too. If I wanted a wash, I'd mix them with water, and either matte medium or PVA glue. But, I could also use them straight, to intensify colours. They mixed better, because they weren't pre-mixed with matte medium. I could mix inks with paints, or other inks, with much better results than I get with the washes.

And, the washes are considerably more expensive on a 'per-use' basis. I'm not talking about the extra $.50 that the bottles cost now, I'm talking about the fact that because the inks weren't pre-thinned, you end up using 3 to 4 times as much wash as you would ink, because you'd think the ink 1:4 with water before using it. In terms of what is actually used to do models, I'd reckon that the new washes cost no less than three times what the inks cost. You just go through them so much faster.

I didn't like the inks because I could never get a matte finish with them without adding so much paint the lost opacity. I do miss chestnut ink though, and you make a good point about the red ink. Baal red is a bit lacking.

I'm definitely hooked on them, especially the devlan mud. They should sell it in half-pints, because I find myself buying a pot of it nearly every time I'm at my FLGS, just to make sure I don't run out. I don't like the inks, because it's hard to keep it where you want it, and even if you're using it as an all-over cover, it drips everywhere. The washes stay where they're put. I do wish they made a reddish-brown though.

50/50 baal red and ogryn flesh with a mote of devlan mud is a pretty nice reddish brown, but chestnut, it ain't.

I never had this problem, because I use a good matte finish spray over everything when I'm done with it. Krylon Matte is wonderful stuff.

Other than speed and consistency, is there any advantage to the washes that can't be accomplished by creating your own wash?

Is there anything special about them?

I create my own washes to the thickness I want them - between an overbrush thickness to a thin glaze.

I have liked inks for some time too - starting out with (and still using) Windsor and Newton inks before Citadel released their first ink package (W&N inks and more intense but also have more gloss).

I cannot say enough about how insanely awesome the washes are.

I'm doing my entire Lizardmen Army primed white and then just using the GW washes, with only a few of the details being real paint (ie Gold and ropes.)

hmmm, from all the great comments i may have to try them.
might make painting up 2k of blood angels alot quicker.

just a question, do the washes leave the model with a glossy look?
i have to spray them with a matte coat once i finish inking them to stop that as it is.

@JD21290 I think that is the problem with the new washes; they give a brilliant matte finish (if you want that) but, unless you mix in a bit of gloss varnish there's no way way you can replicate the look of the old inks :(

I tend to use the washes as a stop gap; instead of painting 6 layers of bleached bone, i'll use 3 layers, sepia wash, and 1 further layer of paint for the same effect. saves time.

They give a great matte finish, and they also make the colour under them more solid, so as J.Black says, you need fewer coats of paint on the model to achieve a convincingly solid colour.

I use them all the time. The main color scheme of my Khorne army is Skorne red, Shining Gold and Devlan mud

Fully addicted.

Badab Black turns metals into something much more relistic looking.

Leviathan purple made painting the purple robes of my dark elves super easy, and the colours are rich and strong.

Gryphonne Sepia helps add shading to pretty much anything.

I've used the washes to great success in my WFB dark elf army... I haven't even started to use them on 40k models but it's evident that with all the stark lines and recesses in 40k, the washes must make painting SO much easier.

I like being able to blend up/down blemishes & dust/dirt with the new inks. better control when thinned.
Can't believe that there isn't a yellow though. Thank God I stocked up!

Check out my gallery here
Also I've started taking photos to use as reference for weathering which can be found here. Please send me your photos so they can be found all in one place!!

I like the washes because they're easier to use straight out of the bottle. They work really well for quickly adding some definition to a model. I hate that they're premixed with a matte medium though. I liked how raw the inks were because it allowed me to control the finish a lot more. I like the Devlan Mud and Badab Black washes a whole lot, and the green one has been useful every now and again.

I do miss the inks like crazy, especially chestnut ink and red ink. Unfortunately I have run out of it and can't seem to find anywhere local to me that still has some stock left :(

Well, there is still 4 of the chestnut inks in my local store I saw today (as well as a couple of other OOP inks).

I've still got plenty of chestnut ink from my original pack, but I prefer the Windsor & Newton inks anyway - a great option for those looking for inks. From your local craft supply store.

I succumbed and bought Thraka Green and Devlan Mud today to try out simple Ork painting for my son.

Cheers

Yup. Well, I don't use GW inks, but I use Vallejo's Smoke for mostly Everything Metal and
then I use Vallejo's Sepia for Mostly Everything Else.

Ifurita uses something called Payne's Gray for Mostly Everything.

Inks always made life easier before, but having decent options makes things even better.

Just buy the Vallejo equivalent, somewhere on dakka their is a chart which tells you the workshop paint or ink and every equivalent for that color from other companies like Vallejo, its how i've managed to get Imperial Purple and Jade Green again
