I have this report for school, and my topic is video games. So, I need a poll on what video games do people like the most. Since I'm too lazy (lol) to poll my classmates, I've decided to poll here on DakkaDakka
So, What video game genre do you like?

I enjoy many genres, but usually the ones that keep me going the most are first person shooters such as Counter-Strike, team Fortress, etc. RPG's and RTS games are great and all, but in my opinion they can get a bit boring and repetitive after awhile.

Wow, all of my favorite genres aren't represented here.
I love Survival Horror games, Fighting Games, and Turn-Based Strategy Games more than anything.

Going to have to go for RPGs personally, I find that I enjoy listening to a story unfold as I play through a game than just moving from one set piece battle to the next as is now the staple in FPS Games, tbh Doom 3 was the last FPS I can say that I actually enjoyed. I also like having to manage inventory and characters etc that comes with an RPG as it allows you to set up your party to how you want to play the game not just choosing which gun to blast the enemy away with.
Also Chrysaor, Survival Horror and Turn Based Strat are really more sub-genres of the overall archetypes Strategy and Action/FPS respectively. Fighting Games though should have their own genre as they are in a league of their own

I can't really narrow it down to one genre. Especially since there are more and more games which combine more genres into one.
I've always been a big fan of solid Jump 'n Runs, but that Genre is as good as dead these days. Thanks a lot Shigeru "I no longer care about the loyal fans who hold the company afloat for 10 years, I want to make games for housewifes and seniors" Myamoto.
I liked Fallout 3 a lot, that's just as much a shooter as it is a RPG.
I also like Beat 'em Ups like Street Fighter or Soul Calibur.
Maybe you could change your poll a bit to allow multiple votes and add a few genres.

While Survival Horror may have shifted over to Action/Adventure in recent years, with the advent of Resident Evil 4 and recent titles like Dead Space, I would still think that the older titles are deserving of their own genre (despite having roots in more action-oriented games), because the way that they play is so far removed from an action game that they aren't exactly interchangeable. You wouldn't crave an action game and play a Survival Horror game, for instance. They also used to have a pretty big focus on puzzle solving, which is now entirely absent from the genre (sadly). That was something else that used to set the genre apart.
And I wouldn't lump Turn Based Strategy in the same category as Real Time Strategy. RTS is all about speed and number crunching (Hardly ever about Strategy), while turn based strategy actually requires tactical planning (usually). I would settle for considering them both part of the Strategy genre, but that's not an option.
I completely agree that the Fighting game is not a sub-genre. It might be able to draw it's roots back to games like River City Ransom, but Fighting games are a class all their own.

I think the older style games were more like adventure games with action elements. The newer games are more action games with adventure elements.
It isn’t really in the game mechanics but the mood that Survival Horror is different to other adventure and action/adventure games. The horror in these games is a unique thing, most games are based on empowering the player, hardly any of it is about freaking the player out and making him feel extremely vulnerable. It becomes hard to classify though, because looked at in this way a game like Doom 3 worked on much the same level as Silent Hill, but in so many other ways the games are completely different.
I think they probably need to be separate categories because the fan bases for each are pretty different, and are becoming more distinct as RTS becomes faster and more demanding.
I ticked RPG, by the way, but only because side scrolling platformer and turn based strategy weren’t there.

To say that the government is expensive and the people not oppressed is to say that the people are rich.”

First Person Shooters, Real Time Strategy, and RPGs.
I really like the more story-driven FPSs like Half-Life and Half-Life 2, and the scary ones like Doom 3 and Alien vs. Predator 1 and 2. I really sort of cut my teeth on this genre, growing up with games like Wolfenstein 3D and Blake Stone, and then later Star Wars: Dark Forces and Jedi Knight.
Real Time Strategy is another genre I sort of grew up with (Warcraft, Warcraft II) and I really love the Blizzard games. Starcraft is probably my favorite. I also played Alpha Centauri for awhile back in the day, and it was fun, and Age of Empires II is also cool. There's a lot more RTSs that I want to play, but just haven't got around to it (the Total War series springs to mind).
RPGs I just have always really enjoyed as well, whether its stuff like Final Fantasy III, Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy VII, or more action RPGs like Diablo and Diablo II. Diablo was another game I sort of grew up with, so I've got a lot of fond memories of that. It was also the first game I ever played online.

So I voted for Action/Adventure, RPGs and other (for fighting games).
I prefer turn-based strategy games over real-time. Turn-based games give me more time think while most if real-time strategy games I know usually come down to who can build the biggest army faster. O once played WC3 online, and 5 minutes after we started I had a Night Elf base camp inside my basecamp.
