When it comes to Warhammer I've been standing on the proverbial sidelines for a while. I decided to finally jump in the game. I've got just about 750 points of Tau made up. I still have to work up the nerve to paint them, but that's another topic.

I'm wondering what you people use to transport your models. I normally throw them all in a tupperware container, but I'm sick of gluing broken models back together. All the GW cases cost a little more than I want to spend. Are there any cheaper cases?

I'm thinking of gluing magnets to the bases of all my models and sticking them in a metal toolbox. That should be cheaper since I've got a ton of little neodymium magnets left over from magnetizing my battlesuits. Has anyone else done anything like this?

I use flat cartons, like the ones you get your models in. Then I dress them on all the insides (including the top) with the bubbly plastic sheets that go "plop" when you press them. You get these wrapped around new TVs and similar. I'm sure this material has a fancy name in english and if someone understands what I'm describing feel free to share :-)

Slim boxes, and bubbly plastic means the models will not move around that much, and will not be broken so easily. It is not quite as good as my GW carry case, but it's completely free, and it's nice to have all my assaultmarines in one box, tactial squads in anoter etc. Remember to put all your small boxes in a big sturdy carton or box before transporting them.

a good size fishing tackle box works well. Definitely enough space for bitz glue tools and boyz. Tho in all honesty a foam cut out is WAY safer for minis then anything else. Ive never really had any problems with my tackle box tho. Sometimes a mini will loose a gun from getting smashed but it adds character

I wouldn't bother with foam for tanks. I kept my spearhead and battleforce boxes, bought a stiff sheet of insulation foam from the home improvement store and carved out compartments for my tanks. That seems to work just fine. For troops, the Citadel figure cases run into problems if the figures start extending outside of the 25mm cylinder. The Army Transport bags (?) are okay, but foam trays get expensive if you have a big collection which you want to cycle through a lot.

Like Mellon says, bubblewrap works just fine. As soon as I get a chance, I'm going down to OfficeMax or OfficeDepot and get one of those huge $20 rolls of bubble wrap, and one of my shoeboxes is going to become the new carrying box for my Soulgrinders.

I've been trying tupperware containers filled with spare foam for my 60mm based figures (daemon princes, spawn, etc.) and some of my ackward sized figures, and that works well except for the occasional transportation injury (I had an old model come free off of its base last week). I think wrapping in bubblewrap and placing in tupperware would work slightly better than what I'm doing now.

And of course, what makes it convenient in the end is to get a transparent platic storage bin to hold all of the other boxes boxes, bags of dice, rulebooks and foam trays.

I use tupperware full of tissue paper and a GW case.

For my baneblade, I take the turret off and use a shoebox.

i just use my backpack (single strap reebok one)
a random box inside that to hold the models (metal models are wrapped in bubble wrap)

dont know why i dont buy a decent case, just seems to easy i guess.

Someone on another forum uses on of those large plastic "paint" buckets. Layers of an old mattress pad keep the models from moving and bouncing all over the place. Just a thought. If you are interested, I can find the link for it.

Pick up some thin eggcrate style foam from a local Craft store, and use it to line a Plano Tacklebox or compartment tray.

Or buy a gun case from a store for 20 bucks.. works as well... plus, if you are tau.. paint "Extra Railguns" on the side of it..

Way out West

I carry alot of my minis around in this:

It is a Plano 4 pistol case. I picked mine up at Wal-mart for $11 each. There are two layers of egg crate foam and one layer of pick-and-pull foam. I've purchased 8 of them over time. I'm down to 3 as my kids have gotten into gaming and needed something to carry their minis in. to carry more than one I've also pop rivetted strips of velcro to each side so you can slap two together. (I'll do a tutorial on this if people are interested?)
Also, my wife bought me a Sabol case that I'm pretty happy with. I'm not fond of the foam in the Sabol though, there seems to be alot of wasted space. Probably going to break down and purchase inserts from Battle Foam.

When I purchased some models online, the seller shipped them in a plastic hardshell with a blue foam on the bottom and inside the lid.

In it's current role it acts as model transport for my WIP's, but in it's past life it used to hold dental casts for dentures...

I'm using Battle Foam to carry around my Imps now, but my Nova Marines are magnetized, and live happily in a Craftsmen 3 drawer Tool box.

The Troops stand up fine in the drawers, only fit problem is anyone with banners, but i just stick them to the side of the trays...

one mag per plastic fig should work, for metal figs i have 2-3 mags each. they just dont move around, its great.

one drawer fits easily 60 troops of standard size. my bikes fit perfectly into the drawers too. For your Battlesuits they should do fine getting maged and sitting sideways in the tray, stuck to the tray sides, or throw them on top.

The flip top is easily big enough to fit your larger figs, my Rhinos and Dreads fit fine in here. I glued some magnets to foamcore sheets to help separate the tanks from each other. Broadsides Hammerheads and Devilfish will fit fine in here.

Side note... Metal tool boxes are almost as expensive as a GW case, if your shopping for one, bring a figure with you to make sure the drawers are deep enough. Some of the discount metal boxes have shallow trays and a regular Marine couldn't fit standing up and down...

I picked a slightly pricy Craftsmen box cause I wanted to take this army to a Con or Gamesday and wanted to be able to lock the box up and chain it to the table I play at... I have heard too many horror stories of people stealing armies...

heres a fuzzy pic of some marines in the metal tool box drawer
