Subject: Making Imperial Custodes? need some help and advice.
since i havent done anything yet ill post it here, rather than people getting hopes up that ive got some piccies of some of them.
i want to make a few for a small project, time isnt a problem, nor is budget (within reason) i got a quote of around £40 per model from someone, since i need 14 + a character (£60) i decided against a commission sculpter.
also, i must supply green stuff, 1 pack per model (so 15 packs at £4 each) gives me a total cost of: £680, which to be honest, is not worth it for any reason.
so i decided to go down the path of making my own, they will confer to all pictures, having halberds with fitted bolters on the blades.
now comes the fun part:
1: what parts would be of use to me? i need to find a range of small feathered wings (imp. eagle style for the helmets, im sure elves have something i can use for the actual helmet aswell.
all in all, i need as many ideas for useful parts as i can get.
2: roll out decorative armour sculpting:
looked on the scribor site and found a wicked trick for making decorative armour: http://www.sciborminiatures.com/en_,sculpting.php?id=571 just wanted to know what results people have had from that, and how easy it is to do, also, tips would be great if you have any.
3: i need them to look ornate, as said, time is not a problem, so i can spend a while on them, i need to make sure they are to a high standard.
4: just a few random pics here to help out:
this is the style i prefer:
i would love to be able to make those ones, but the only thing i would want to change would be the bolter-halberds, just to make them seem a tad more ornate.

wow, good luck doing those. the basic models are space marines + high elf heads. for wings, you can get FW etched brass aquilas. the rest is just greenstuff + plasticard. some other helpful parts are VC grave guard for ornate weapons/shields and a bit more sinister wings, chaos warrior for the armoured legs and flagellants for the endless amounts of skull, scrolls, books and whatnot.
btw, dave taylor who did the awesome custodes that were featured on the old GW site is a member of dakka, so maybe he'll answer questions. there used to be a huge article on the custodes on the spanish GW site, but it seems to have been deleted.

For the heads I've seen people use both dark eldar warrior heads and high elf bits as a base, also while there are not many good bits on the dark eldar sprue there are some hair plumes that would look quite good with some trimming. As for wings n junk, raid the dark angels sprues for bigger mariney wings but the smaller feathery stuff you are probably going to have to GS. I have a guide to GS feathers that was handed to me by the studio guys last year at games day, i'll see if i can find it for you. looks like most of the weapons are nemnisis force weapons but maybe you could try mounting bolters to the haft of the weapon rather than on the wrist (like the old GKT). For the backpacks maybe you could try replacing the exhausts with melta gun nozzels, did this on one of my templar commanders and it turned out quite nicely, if not maybe you should try using the SM force commander packs (double eagle head).
what scale are you planning? (28mm heroic or truescale?) and also, good luck

seems elf heads with HE decoration would work well as a base, just thinking weather or not they will be chunky enough though, may have to bulk them out a bit.
PAGK's seem useful for the halbers, allthough ill have to remove the pad decoration.
thanks warmaster, ill drop dave a pm and hope he can help me out.
sirius: feathers, plumes, all not a problem i can do most of the basics with GS, only things i have trouble with are:
*heavy detail (large amounts of detail on a small surface isnt easy)
* faces: ive never really tried a human face, but scrib. has some good tips and a tutorial on it, so ill have a go.
DA look like a good source for wings, anyone have a pic of the raven wing sprue atall please?
as said, thanks for all the help thus far

been talking to Mr Dave Taylor about his custodes, and he has helped me out to no end providing pics and ideas.
ill get some concepts drawn up 1st (using WHFB chaos warrior bodies as a base)
if they dont work out too well then i think DA or temple. bodies are the way to go, the pre-made robes will save me alot of time when it comes to sculpting my own.
im now torn between heads.
concept 1: slightly bulked out avenger head.
concept 2: high elf armoured head, eagle on the mid section of it, and a sculpted plume on the top, how this will work out is yet to be seen.

"And what is wrong with their life? What on earth is less reprehensible than the life of the Levovs?"
- American Pastoral, Philip Roth
Oh, Death was never enemy of ours!
We laughed at him, we leagued with him, old chum.
No soldier's paid to kick against His powers.
We laughed - knowing that better men would come,
And greater wars: when each proud fighter brags
He wars on Death, for lives; not men, for flags.

forgot about this project for a few days :(
been playing about with GS moulds i made for armour plates.
im going for a more japanese samurai look on the armour details.
ill get some pics up soon, waiting for a tac squad to turn up before i can do it though since test fits were done on black reach tac marines.
luna, i will be using high elf heads hun, dont worry the ones from the silver helms box look pretty good
going to try and find a way to fit in the lions aswell from the high elf range why? because i like them, and it should fit the overall feel of the unit

plastic AOBR terminator legs would be enough and cheaper, i only chose those leg because they were facing same angle ( easier for me to photoshop)
THe silver helm (wings) will provide all the wings and stars and stuff to decorate the termi legs.
Do you like how it looks? i think its the best of all the no GS kit bash.
*edit
as cool as the first pic you posted was, i still perfer broader leg armor . Because as male counter part
the thin legs looks too much like Sisters of Silence:

ive got some black reach termies floating about in a bitz box, i think ive got a chaos warrior body or 2 about aswell.
dont have the elf head, but i do have some grey knights
from what ive seen the silver helms sprue has some decent stuff on it i can use.
i love how it looks hence why i would be willing to build it like your pic you made and thanks again for that
1 thing i may change though is the spear / blade.
custodes had the bolters built into them, but the silver helms lances should help for a base, then the blades from GK's and standard bolters.
all in all i think its the best way of doing them thanks to that pic, which you will be getting a prezzy for as ive been stuck for ages on these
