I've liked the look of the armor on the cover of the Horus Heresy books - it looks shot-up, worn, chipped, damaged, paint peeling, etc. I'm wondering how to get that look on my minis, especially the power armor types. Part of the fluff of my chapter is that they've been around a long, long time and are not in the best of supply situations, with shiny new stuff appearing only rarely and lots of repair and scavenging done on and off the battlefield.

Certainly I can make damage with a knife, etc. I've done that before.

Is there some sort of a solvent that would cause the plastic to "blister" a little, help achieve a paint peeling and eroding effect?

Any thoughts and ideas, including any pictures of other's work would be really appreciated.

Oooh, I got nothing about any sort of Solvent, although I know that there are certain checmicals that will cause your plastic to "melt". But you gotta be careful.

My one piece of advice would be to try drybrushing some Yellow Ochre on a piece and see how you like it. Yellow ochre is actually made with dirt in it. Nothing makes models look as dirty as actual dirt!

Best advice I got, I'm afraid.

I'm looking at the cover of Horus Rising right now, and the weathering on there should be pretty easy to simulate.
Foundation Washes and some drybrushing are your best friends for this kind of stuff. For larger stuff like backpacks and
shoulder blades, a stippling of black or brown would be good.
Shortbus is on the right track with the GW link too.
And as I added in the deffkopta thread, reference pics are a must!!

PS: What color are you doing your Marines in?

Basically, you do an off color (usu. darker) patch and then black line and highlight to give the illusion of peeled paint.

A more advanced method involves using tape that is used to create an over layer. I don't know that it is worth doing on many models, though.

I'm planning a desert tan sort of scheme. The of the blistering rust is an effect I'd like to quickly recreate. I can do a similar effect with paint in the methods people have pointed out. I was hoping to just put a drop of solvent on a corner and let it blister or something.

Perhaps a drop of straight Pine-Sol?

i dunno how much you get em for. and not quite sure what you mean... but you can make some pretty awsome looking damage on plastic with a sautering iron (think i spelt that wrong) especially if you just go strait into it, looks like you just got shot by a melta and laughed o_o

My best guess for you is like everyone else said, Dry Brushing and Washes, and for the shot up holes in the armour maybe you could heat the end of a paper clip and burn some small holes in the armour, it may just give you the look that your looking for.

Edit for mag: "worship before nipples ..... and his army of marmite marines!"

and mag, think before you post mate

I just didn't want to see 'nipples' and 'marmite' in the same sentence. Sounds like a form of torture to me

Brilliant! I don't know Marmite, but I'm guessing that any sticky food substance like jam would work. You blotch it on, let it dry, spray paint, then wash it off. Simple!
