This is the definitive thread for this EPIC series. I recently got addicted to it after watching the live-action movie. I'm quite sad that I don't have an old console to play the older games. Still, Deception and Armageddon are enough for me.

Discuss the wonders of spine-ripping, splattering heads, and disembowlment.

People are like dice, a certain Frenchman said that. You throw yourself in the direction of your own choosing. People are free because they can do that. Everyone's circumstances are different, but no matter how small the choice, at the very least, you can throw yourself. It's not chance or fate. It's the choice you made.

After MK3 the series is dead to me.....

I loved MK2 so much that I actually own the arcade machine to bad the wife makes me keep it in the garage.

Why? Going into 3D was a huge boost for the series. It meant that the characters weren't palette-swaps of each other.

Exactly. Palette-swaps with new(occasionally) moves was what made the series(especially 3 and its upgraded version) so much win. I like that the series used to be about differentiating the characters with their moves, not their looks. After that, the series just fell into the crap that is crappy looking "individualistic" characters and generic fatalities. Changing combat styles mid fight? Adding an almost purely ranged character? WTF?

MK vs DC is hopefully the final nail in the coffin of a franchise that's only gone down hill since the end of the 90's.

I played 1+2 on the Gameboy for while, but I wasn't really interested in it. I had a lot of fun with Deadly Alliance though, the style-switching was imo pretty cool.

MK vs. DC isn't so bad, it's still a solid fighter, just not quite as violent as before.

The characters are entirely different from each other. It's like comparing apples and oranges; Scorpion is nothing like Onaga, and Jax is nothing like Sindel.

What purely ranged character are you on about? Every character has a ranged attack.

I'm torn on the old and new fatalities. The old ones are really cool and unique, but the new ones can be much more cool in their own way, in that there are hundreds of possible combinations.

And finally, character appearences. It's what makes Soul Calibur successful; no two characters look the same. If every ninja in MK was a palette swap of Scorpion, it'd be a pretty bland game indeed.

Well, at least these days one can actually tell the difference. When I played it on the GameBoy I had no idea what was the difference between Scorpion, Reptile and Sub-Zero.

Hang on Anung, isn't MK banned over there, or at least more heavily padded than Soulcalibur? (e.g. weapons are blunt as pillows and only 'knock people out')

Not every game. Deadly Alliance for example was uncut, while in Shaolin Monks, the screen went black for every fatality.

Oh, and in Germany, MK vs. DC has a 16+ rating and we get 8i]all[/i] the fatalities, even the Joker gun

Soul Calibur is just as "brutal" as anywhere else. People get stabbed with swords and they come out on the other end, but that's all you see.

MK Armageddon looked pretty cool. I'm not even sure if it's out in Germany...
