I'm gonna start warhammer soon, I'm going to play lizardmen.
I will purchase the rules and models online, but I don't know what to do:

Should I purchase the books before the models so that I know what units to take.
Or should I purchase everything in one big order.

What should I do

It should be the same process as a 40k army!

Get the book first and a small squad of models.
Do some test paint/assembly and see if you like them up close.
Whilst you are going through this process read the book and create an army list.

If you must buy the models at the same time (for postage reasons i'd assume) i'm sure someone here can point you towards some 'must haves'.
Or browse the Army Lists Forum and pick a basic structure that you fancy the look of.

Hope this helps.

If I knew, I'd tell you.

Yea, buy the book and a Slann mage/skink priest with some saurus/skinks. It doesn't matter which models you buy first but just make sure that you have the book.

Book=knowledge.
Knowledge=power
Power=lizardmen

The oonivers vill burn!

Book first, and a Batallion. Should be enough to be going on with, a variety of decent units.

Fed up of Scalpers? But still want your Exclusives? Why not join us?

Should really always get the book first, but a couple of core units like Skinks or Saurus wouldn't hurt if you want to crack on with modelling and painting.

I would say read the book in store first so you are sure you like what you see.

If there are no stores available....

ask lizzy players to give you a quick run down on the units and their role / over all stats.

personally, i would start off with the book, a battalion, and maybe a character or two...
you will use saurus and skinks and almost every army you play, and cold one riders and temple guard are good elite units that will usually make the cut as well...
from there...
also for your main characters, you will want to choose between either a slann or old blood, a slann for a magic based army and old blood for a fighty army...
also, ordering these things all at once from a discount site such as thewarstore or ccgarmory will save you money on both models and shipping...
and since you will be using the models in a battalion regularly, its your best bet to start with

The idea was to buy the book, a lizard batalion,a box of saurs and an old blood on cold one.
Sad thing is the site on which I was going to order doesn't have the old blood anymore, I'm now forced to buy one on a carnosaur.

A question for those of you who have the lizard book is this a solid army?

I cant read the book in the store for two reasons:
1. I don't have a local wargaming store, the nearest one is a one hour ride.
2. I don't know the warhammer rules, you cannot understand the book if you don't know what the warhammer rules are.

BTW I don't know any other players exept my brothers.

K then i'll try to describe the best i can without listing rules.

Cold blooded: Even though lizardmen have sort of low leader ship , they are hard
to break with this rule . So you can expect them to stick around with your plans.

HQ: You have these types.
Slann ( Giant toad mage you see floating around, strongest mage in army )
Old Blood ( Your strong hand to hand combat leaders )
Skink Chief ( Your lesser hand to hand leader , have some weapon that benefits from riding on stegadon )
Skink Priest ( Lesser mage that can ride in the unique Engine of God stegadon , it has very devastating effects you can pick )

Core:
Saurus: Hits hard, 2 attacks! can carry spears too. ( some say the best core unit in game )
Skink: Tiny fragile creatures .Can run around throwing short range javelin , or team up with giant Kroxigors
Skink SKirmisher: They have poison darts too, but less special ability compared to chameleon skinks.

Rare:
Ancient Stegadon: similar to stegadon, but carries GIANT poison blow gun + darts. shoot lots and lots of them too
Salamander Hunting Pack: 1 giant spitting dinosaur that goes to war with its skink handler.
Razordon hunting pack: 1 giant spiky dinosaur that flings spikes at enemies along with its skink handler.

Special:

Temple Guards: 2 attacks each , good damages
Kroxigor : Your giant dinosaur with giant 2hd weapons
Cold ones: Your calvary , hit hard , but sometimes they suffer from stupidity ( mop around doing nothing )
Chameleon skinks : Your hit and run scout unit that runs around shooting short range poison darts ( can damage tough monsters through poisoning )
Terradon: Your flying dinosaurs , can fly over obstacle to take out lone special character / warmachine crews
Stegadon: Everyone's favorite giant dinosaur . Carries over sized bolt thrower that hits hard from range , hits hard in close range too.

Special Characters: These are premade ones you can choose , they have their own special equipments:

Lord Kroak: Supposed to be the best caster ingame? ( his body is destroyed pretty much )
Lord Mazdamundi: Im confused about this guy... he is sort of weak / but his mount is strong ... his gear makes him VERY tough.
seems like he is made for purpose to destroy your enemy characters and their weapons.
Kroq Gar - Your strongest saurus old blood character . best combat damage out put in lizardman . Have decent shooting magic attack.
Tenhenhauin: Skink lord , soso combat attacks, so so spell damage. ( jack of all traits master of none? )

Hero - Tettoeko : Skink priest that uses heaven magic ( think of him as someone that aims giant comet on enemy units )
Hero - Chakax : abit confused about this char too.... he is like the master of temple guards. His gear is also anti enemy character
yet he doesnt seem to have enough wound to save him -_-
Hero- Gorok : Your saurus hero with nice attack and he is tough . But nothing special other than hand to hand combats. Seems to be a very good defender to halt enemy units.
Hero- Tic Tac To: Your skink hero that rides flying dinosaur , may join other units of flying dinos. Average stats, but been able to fly make him able to pick perfered targets easily.
Hero- Oxyoto : He is the (sniper) of your army no impressive gears or stats , but he ran around killing character he chooses, or warmachine crews.

Hope this helps! ( it better!!!! ) Its as comprehensive as it can get without buying the codex >

*PS note worthy stuff to bring up for this edition:

- Engines of the gods are used by skink priests as mounts. Most widely used power is the area of effect damage spell ( cannot be stopped , can be casted right
into combat ) im guessing your troops holds on the enemies into the center of the field, and the engines just hits everything around them.
- Slanns can take over skink priest's mind and cast his spell as if he is located at where the skink priest is standing at.
