Hey all,

So I'm pretty much done with my first 5 space marines, I hope you like them. I am a very slow painter as I find real life tends to get in the way a lot They are technically still WIP as they haven't got the bases done yet. I'm still working out what terrain they will be on but it will probably be a dusty, rocky desert.

As ever C&C very welcome. I thought id put these up here to get some motivation for painting up the AoBR box.

Thanks for the kind words guys. I have never played 40k before and these guys are going to be my first army.

Ive only ever painted maybe a dozen or so figures ever, mostly fantasy stuff from Rackham until they stopped making 'real' mini's.

Like I say I've never played 40k but I really want to get an army painted so I can finally play.

I was really just aiming for a decent tabletop quality nothing too fancy, I'm not really good enough.

Brillant, amazing and wonderful.

Faultless........ expect the freehand does not look as the markings on the aobr models, but it is amazing!

Also the metalics and flesh may need a wash down.

Congrats

That is really quite good, I especially like the gun sight in the last picture, that is pretty pro!

A bit of a wash in a couple of places to add a bit of depth and they will really pop!

In the wrong place at the right time.

I think Clagar is pretty cool guy, eh kills aleins and doesn't afraid of anything.

Coming along nicely, how are you going to base them?

I love your crisp free hand - one thing they could use is a lot more definition in the guys face, and some low lighting on the armour (it looks like a blue tide atm).

Nuclear: Properly pronounced new-clear, not new-cue-lir. There is no 'u' between the c and l, so stop saying it because it just makes you sound like a dumbass. This includes nucleolus, and all other derivatives of the word.

Not bad at all. Did you use straight ultramarines blue, or did you do a basecoat of mordian blue? The freehand is really good - it's quite hard on smooth surfaces because the brush sometimes slips.

People are like dice, a certain Frenchman said that. You throw yourself in the direction of your own choosing. People are free because they can do that. Everyone's circumstances are different, but no matter how small the choice, at the very least, you can throw yourself. It's not chance or fate. It's the choice you made.

Stubby, you've done waay better than my first marines.

Though may I suggest painting the little tubes/pipes on the sides of the Marine's heads. That aside though, those are looking great!

How did you paint them, BTW?

Some people play to win, some people play for fun. Me? I play to kill toy soldiers.

Undetermined banishment aside, those SMurfs look really deep and intense. It might look better with a highlight tough.

I would agree, they are pretty good. But with washes and some highlighting, they would look even better!

For your first marines, they are very good indeed. I remember my first marines, and it looked like I'd dropped them in the paint pot xD

Yes, these models are phenominal. Better than mine, and I've been painting for years. So keep up the good work, and thanks for the pictures. Did they take a long time? If so, not a big deal with Space Marines since they have small armies and it is worth taking time to get them right.

What's next?

Wow I really appreciate the responses folks

I am a very slow painter, when I'm going fast it takes me maybe two or three evenings to paint one of these guys. But I usually have other things that I'm doing too so they get put to one side for a while.

There is actually no Ultramarines blue on them at all (I know its sacrilege ) I saw a tutorial once, I think it was on CMON, that showed some mini painted in this really deep, deep blue, (almost 'Ultra' blue. get it? )and I thought it was an awesome colour so I used it.

Basically I undercoat Black, followed by Midnight Blue in the deep recesses and grooves of the armour plating. Next I go over the main areas of the armour plates with Regal Blue, then the higher/lighter areas with a 50/50 Regal/Enchanted mix. Lastly I highlight with pure Enchanted Blue.

The highlighting is there but its fairly subtle and the camera doesn't pick it up very well because they are SO blue.

I don't have any actual washes / inks yet but I'll definitely pick some up asap and try out what you were saying, I assume a black wash for the bolters, and Sepia or Ogryn Flesh for the face ?(and yes it could do with some definition) would you recommend a wash over the gold of the chest eagles maybe? perhaps the sepia again?

Thanks again for the advice, and hi Court from the snowy wasteland of Edmonton

Ever hear the story of the tortoise and the hare? Just kidding, but seriously, I don't really care if your painting is slow as long as your results are as great as the ones so far! Great first SM models. Awesome work. No, really. Awesome.

They aren't based. They aren't done. Looking good so far, though.
