I personally think its probably the best rules set GW have done in a long, long time! Easy to understand, uncomplicated and fun!!! Mind you, this is the first edition so they should have ruined it by the fourth edition same as Warhammer and 40k...

Even though what you described sounds really nice , i suspect it'll lose popularity like the first LOTR GW did.
And then altogether they'll be removed from the production line :"/

Its what the original LotR should have been from their adaption of The Two Towers onwards. The original was great for recreating the Fellowship of the Ring skirmishes but could not handle bigger things like Helms Deep and you could forget Pelennor Fields unless you had a very long time to play it... The War of the Ring is designed for mass battles such as the last two.

I'm liking it. I'll be playing my third game tomorrow. The streamlined movement/combat rules combine with the strategy of might points and epic actions to make a surprisingly deep game.

They probably didn't have the resources to develop the game as War of the Ring at that time.

I've only played a couple demo games, but I think I'm really going to enjoy it. What do you guys think is good for the "normal" sized game? I wrote a list today for 2k, but it seemed really big.

I feel that it's rather the same as in 40k.
1500 for a standard evening-filling game but you are likely to want some more once you get used to the game, like the 1750pts in many 40k tournaments.

We've only played one points-balanced game so far, based roughly on how many units we could field, and it came to about 1700. That was with each unit getting full command, and each side having enough spare points to take a fortune or fate.
2000 points will either have a lot of figures on the table, or some really expensive units or heroes.
Today we played a giant game of "what have we got and how much of it can we fit on a 4x8 table?" with 4 epic heroes on a side. It was fun, but we only got through 3 turns in 4 hours.

I am pretty excited about the release myself. Just because the rules are simpler to institute doesn't mean it is a simple game.
The interleaved turn structure pretty much takes care of that simplicity issue right there and ads a lot of suspense.
I think I am going to have a lot of fun with this game. It seems that GW finally accomplished their mission to make LotR the third core game as they have been spouting about for so long.
Good for them I say. But it is making my decisions really hard for hobby time and expenses, but thats a good thing in some ways. I can still work on making space hulk tiles while painting Angmar ghosts, so its all good for me.

It is actually a cracking game, quick, easy and very flowing. Im seriously considering this to replace my main game which is 40k. Something i never thought could be done as 40k is the only thing i play but from playing a demo in store i now have so many lotr`s stuff it scary. Ive read the rules and its like how a game should be made and played.

it seems to be a fun as well as an easy game to get into. i like its pace... then again the demo I saw might have been missing a huge chunks of rules

i liek the look of it. personally i think this might nearly replace the original LOTR or at least make more shop stock it. My GF and i are both staring armies as it gave us an excuse to do something together (since shes pretty much sidelined when it comes to 40k or fantasy) i liek the idea of having bigger armies and really the book is clear and totally stand alone (for now) i guess there will be scenario books to follow, just hope they don't get as hard to work as the source book malarky!

Sofar my opinion of the game is good. Very good indeed. Unfortunately I haven't had a chance to play a proper game yet so my opinions are based entirely on reading the book.
What's struck me sofar is that its clean, well presented and fast paced. Having all the factions in one place is a nice touch as well. This game really does remind me of Warmaster (A very good thing!). I'll admit I was a bit worried by all the fortunes and fates, just because I always believed it was one of the SBG's great strengths that such things were eschewed. But having read them I see nothing game breaking.
I only hope that GW plan to keep supporting this game with new models and new plastics. LotR figures have always been good value and that makes it very attractive for massed battle games. My fingers are crossed for plastic Dunendlings and Khand.
I'm also very presently surprised by the very positive reception the game has had sofar. Can't remember the last time I saw a set rules by GW receive almost universal praise.

I like it. Now I can only hope that GW abandons the standard LOTR play style and replaces it with this. This is from someone who has only ever played 2 games of LOTR and 2 of WOTR. I hated LOTR but I'm loving the WOTR system.

After playing another demo game at the launch day last Saturday and actually buying the rulebook, I'm really starting to warm to the game.
My first demo was'nt great, as the GW staff did'nt seem to have the rules down themselves. (Not a criticism BTW.)
However, I still prefer the SBG hands down, but hopefully it can ride along on the coatails of WOTR for a while!

I too wish that this is what LotR SBG had originally been.
I like the character driven scenario skirmish aspect of the game, but I felt fore using only a dozen or so models a side that the rules were far too simple (highest die roll wins...?). A lot of things with the SBG just didn't sit right with me.
I just ordered the WotR book, looking forward to reading the rules. But i've yet to purchase anything else. Going to see if I like it enough before I proceed.
