Subject: Tournaments, 1500 or 1850??

On episode 34 of Dice Like Thunder it sounded as if they were pretty convinced 1500 was the best points limit...they did say it was the way the game was tested so thats a valid point but i was wondering what everyone alse thought about this.
I know they throwdown with 1500 across the pond and have only heard good things about it...are super units less effective? Overall is the game more balanced?
Just wondered what you all thought.

I agree. 1500 is best. It makes you spend your points more discerningly.

We're about to do one at 2550... then again we're all playing army's we've never played before so the idea was to go wild and some of everything to see what they can do.
Otherwise we usually play 1850. The smaller the points limit, the more tight and tweaked the list and the less toys you can bring. There's less room to move. Sure, you can tweak a 2500 list 'til the cows come home, and have it ultra-tuned for whatever you're about to face, but in anything above 1500, once you've got that solid workable core, you can then start adding fun stuff. Not that core stuff isn't fun, or that fun stuff isn't competative or good, I just mean that at smaller points levels there's less room for experimentation.
Plus I don't like middling games. The largest 'small' game I'll play is 1250, and I like 850 points. But beyond that 1850-2050 is the best for me.

I think 1500 points is pretty solid. I seem to recall Tournaments being 1700 points once upon a time... not a bad number either. I think anything between 1500-1850 would be my ideal points range for a Tournament (or any game, really)

Standard I run is 1750, though the next two are shaking things up with a 2250 followed by a 750.

I personally prefer 1850. It allows you to take a wide enough array of units, and also enough counters to lists.
At 1500, I find that it is easier to overwhelm people w/ certain types of units (ie. way more armor than someone can handle, or way more infantry, MC, ect).
At 1850, more people seem to be able to build a more flexible list that wont have such a hard time adapting to those specific lists.

I've seen tourneys from 750 up to 1850 and each one has its benefits and deficits.
At 750, you're small and the games go quick. The flip side here is that folks with elite armies can wind up being unable to field units they may want to play. Honestly, I tend to like lower point limits. It makes a tourney accessible to newer players with fewer models and let's you go at a leisurely pace.
At 1500 and above (I haven't found the bump to 1850 to make a huge difference, but I don't have expensive troops, so I likely don't feel the pinch there) simply take longer to play. Just the way it is. There are more models on the board and you're pretty much forced to play efficiently. It's also less friendly toward high unit builds if you're not good and quick at 'put 'em on, take 'em off'. In terms of players (at least in my area), it tends to attract an older crowd since most of the kids starting out just don't have enough models to field a 'larger' army. You tend to screen the beginners out and wind up with more experienced players. This is also the point level where you start to see the 'bigger' units more often.

I like anything from 1500-1850. I think some armies dont fully shine until you hit 1750 though.
I dont really like 2k and higher. Feels too much like "lets see if I can fill the points up" rather that "ok how do I fit what I want into XXXX."

I prefer 1500. Granted, 1500 brings different builds to the fore (Nidzilla) compared to higher points levels (1850 = Nob Bikers, Jetbike Councils).
I prefer the smaller game points value because you can actually play the game at a less hurried pace to finish in the 2-2.5 hours provided. I can't remember how many people I've seen playing horde v horde, or horde v anything bigger than GKT or Deathwing, who only get through half their games due to the sheer number of models.
And I know someone will say "I play with 250 boyz/gaunts/gretchin/IG and I can finish in 2.5 hours" - nice for you. I think that result is not the norm.
Part of the tourny is the joy of playing, and I don't get joy from having to rush to finish all of my games in the allotted time.

If Australia didn't have Arcanacon everyone would realize how much 1200 sucks.
But Arcanacon is awesome so there you go.
TO's have told me that it gets really hard to fit in 3 games of 1850 in a normal day of 8:30 to 5:00. It's possible though.
So 1500 tournaments are less stress on the organizers.

I love 1850 and think it is the best value for a 5 game Grand Tournament. Though I had a great time at the socal slaughter in Space with 2000.
At 1500 some lists just don't work nearly as well as they would at 1750 or 1850.
I've actually never seen eldar lose a 1500 point game in 5th edition.
The thing about GTs that some don't understand is that the format is different from the UK to the US.
Under the current format in the UK you get 20 points if you win, 10 if you draw, and 1 if you lose a game. VP's are also tracked for tiebreakers So all you have to do in some missions is win by the slimist of margins to get the full 20 points.
Under the current US GT format you have additional things that you must do to get the full 20 battle points for a game.
An example is Kill points. In the UK GT you get 20 battle points if you have 1 more kill point then the other player. In the US GT you need to have double the number of kill points to be able to claim the full 20 battle points.
