“Who claims the Emperor guides you and not to I? You say he speaks not to the tainted and the lost, but I hear a thousand voices in my head, and I presume one is his.” – The Apostle

Hey everyone, I’m still new here but I am a long time Necromunda fan who has recently returned to the hobby. Here on Dakka, all the =I=munda threads have blown me away (I’m looking at you Migsula, Coll Hammer et al. and Xanthos et al.!). I’d always wanted to explore the 41st millennium in-depth using the necromunda ruleset as a base and some carefully selected miniatures (as I am not a very good modeller at all!) But browsing Dakka I’ve found inspiration to try and create something more personal and suited, so I went out and bought greenstuff and some tools, and tried to come up with something.

So this is my first model using extensive greenstuff (previous experience being I sculpted a belly for a delaque and some toad stools and that’s all.) So it’s been a massive learning curve, but I thought going into the deep end would be best/fun.

So what do you think? It’s a mutant/ deviant human armed with a Plasma Gun. The greenstuff came out less smooth than I would have liked, and I found it hard to shape at times. I’d like people’s opinions and also lots of advice/ tips on how to improve greenstuffing!

Hopefully this Journal will be regular and become an entertaining read, as I am going to try and get a campaign running eventually! Thanks for stopping by! :]

File: 7602/ 3213/ 32-10.294// Code: Deeper Vileness//

Date:0324987M41.

Subject: The following contains investigations by Inquisitor Drommel pertaining to the destruction of an Imperial sanctioned mining colony on Damitis IV in the Peritus Semper system//

Rating: Gamma level clearance//

Cross ref to: Inquistor Praxius and Inquistor Gravon of the Ormentum Deus cell.

+++0194986M41.+++

Findings:

Nonfulfilment of contract obligations and failure to establish communications with the colony roused suspicions warranting investigation. Upon docking with the colony, auspex scanners and bio-rangers detected scant signs of life. Colony found to be desolate and silent. Signs of fierce battle between the colony militia and workers prevalent, conflict occurred at least two years past. Corpses fully decomposed or devoured by scavengers. All files from internal systems relating to mining priorities and findings have been wiped. Fractured reports remain of an unknown error in procedures occurring resulting a mass accident and loss of life, date unknown, perhaps crucial. Some of the skeletal remains –presumed colony worker- show signs of deviant growth.

Thoughts:

Establishing facts pertaining to the accident and later outbreaks of violence is a low level priority. However investigations are best pursued beyond Damitis IV. Heavy speculation on mutant attacks in the system to be related, escaped colony workers being the believed candidate. It must be noted that the workers have disbanded through out the system and pose no real threat with the exception of the one reported as the “Apostle”. Correlation of sightings shows a pattern of travel. Conjecture suggests this Apostle has either an artefact or knowledge which he means to deliver somewhere in the system. His location is our priority.

Wow...just wow! Really great to see people inspired by those other awesome blogs! I'm very tempted to buy ta box of Ghouls and do the same here!

what other mutants do you have planned for us?

@Jhadon: there are no fixed rules for =I=munda, but you should check out the thread about that in the Skirmish games section of this forum.

Nice start indeed, I'm going to have to raid Warhammer for some bitz methinks. I've predominantly got 40k modern style bitz these days. Very cool.

Some clever use of parts in there, but I think the rags about the legs just add alot of character to this piece.

Looking forward to your next post, Subscribed!

That is a great start. Sharp GS work, and I like the contrast in bulk between the large plasmagun, and the spindly arms/spikes.

Looking forward to progress!

Looks pretty sharp, though I think the snout on the gas mask could be a bit shorter... it looks a bit long in the first picture.

If you are having trouble with GS try different methods of keeping your tools lubricated. I generally use just spit, but I have known people to use everything from olive oil to KY.
Also, you might want to keep an eye out for things called 'clay shapers' or 'paint shapers' that are sort of paint brushes with sillicon tips that don't stick to things, and are soft enough that they shape very smoothly. Grey_Death talks about them in a little essay in the Painting and Modeling Tutorial section.

Great start so far though, and I really look forward to seeing these get some paint on them!

Nice work! Especially for a first time with GS.

You know, the more I see what other people do with those ghouls, the more I feel the need to get some of my own. They'd make nice family for the All-Father....

Who gave that mutant a plasma gun! Heresy I say!

Very awesome looking mutant/ghoul, it's very well done and the GS is simple and effective. If you keep up this quality this log is going to be added to the growing ranks of =I= glory, so I'm definitely keeping an eye on it!

I think the lad might need to drill out his plasma barrel? Otherwise that's solid stuff Botts, I like the GS wrappings and such. Digging the base too, guessing it's a resin cast? Or is it some base-coated DIY awesomeness?

Thanks everyone for your positive feedback, and also the tips!

The base is a a resin cast, so I can take no credit for it! It's from 'Dark Art Miniatures', I picked them up a few weeks ago as my brother was placing an order. Well worth the money. Once I have a solid collection to start playing some games with, I hope to create some of my own themed bases for later miniatures!

Malika2, feel free to do the same, I am by no means the first to use the Ghouls for 40K conversions, but the variation between each conversion I've seen just goes to show how versatile the kit is! I would love to see more =I=munda style conversions based on them! :]

Thanks for the Greenstuff advice Wehrkind. I'm looking into getting some paint shapers soon as they look like they'll make the whole process a lot easier! I agree about the gas mask comment, although the 'disc' is actually stuck onto his chin showing how long his face really is ha~! I do think it looks a bit like an animal muzzle though, which I like!

Tael, thanks for the kind words. I am a big fan of the Tau conversions on your site, especially the 'non-combatants' like the news reporter and the Earth Cast Tau!

Don't worry guys! Once I get my hands on a modeling drill, the weapons will be drilled! xD

I spent this morning working on the second of my mutants. I mixed more 'blue' into the Greenstuff which seemed to help, and I let it sit for longer before trying to fashion it. I am a lot more pleased with this conversion than the first one, but I still have a long way to go!

Tell me what you think? I still need to work on smoothing the Greenstuff, but I think it's certainly an improvement!

Each of the ghouls have their midriffs filled with Greenstuff to give them slightly better posture, however I am varying it from one miniture to the next to give them all different heights, this second one is a lot taller than the first!

I am a little unsure how to convert the rest, and I am going to work on other things whilst I wait for inspiration! I do not intend to convert every miniature I'll be using for =I=munda, and the vast bulk of the gangs will be made up from my old Necromunda miniatures, stripped and re-painted. I am a big fan of the range, with the House Escher miniatures probably being my all time favorites from GW!

Here is my current =I=munda bitz box!

I plan to paint these two, and a selection of other miniatures (including the Tyranid army I am still working on! D: ) before I convert anymore. But stay tuned for painting updates! :]

These kind of off springs make me so happy

Lovely start, with a strong theme building. I've also used the ghoul kit a lot for my mutants and must say it's a supreme set for this kind of projects. Overall, I find myself using as much fantasy plastics as 40k for my 40k and =I=munda conversions.

I strongly recommend shapers for sculpting. I only found them a few weeks ago myself and feel that they have revolutionized my sculpting.

That looks great! I am going to have to steal your work on the ghouls for my own projects. I really am impressed at how seamlessly your attached the arms to the kit, and the hood/hat thing really is a nice touch. Over all, the model doesn't look like the ghoul it was hewn from, which is quite impressive to me.
Filling out the midsections, though difficult to see in the pictures, really does change the look of the model in a great way. I am going to have to remember that.

Now that's an update. Is it just me or does that not look like a Smruf gone..Real Bad(tm). ?

Definite improvement in finish compared to the first, great to see your approach improve so quickly too. I tend to do the same with my GS (slightly more Blue + Wait prior to use) seems to do the trick indeed.

With you too crazies mouthing off about these Ghoul kits.. methinks I might need to invest in the dark side of Warhammer shortly....

Thanks again for the kind words everyone! Migsula, I caught a glimpse of a converted Ghoul in one of your pictures which was one of the first that inspired me!

I just ordered a whole set of Paint/Colour shapers, so I can't wait for them to arrive, hopefully you'll all be able to see some quite drastic improvement when I get them! :]

I'm starting to realise the ultimate freedom Green stuff gives you in posing your model. No sacrifices have to be made as all gaps are easily filled in. As the Ghouls kit has the shoulder blades attached to the arms, I simply snipped these off and I was free to pose the models however I wanted!

If you want Wehrkind, I can take a picture of just a Torso and Legs attached with a filled midriff, but I am sure you can figure it out yourself with a little experimentation, it's very simple to do!

@ Paul Atreides, Cruentus is right! The rifle is an Autogun that comes from one of the Plastic Orlocks from the original Necromunda Boxset. I know this probably doesn't help, but they still crop up on Ebay fairly often too! I wish I had more of these Autoguns or the Shotguns left, I have two Lasguns which are in a similar position, but they feel less fitting for my gang...

Here's the first 5 that'll receive paint this and next week!

Including the Bulk Heads!!

Gotta agree with Migs, shapers are the key for sculpting.

Lovely start here, love the jester style hat and that autogun is very nice.

I like the lower angle photo on the second ghoul, adds a whole level of scary to him. I see the servitor in the background, definitely a series of releases by GW that I have enjoyed. Very more visceral interpretations of the idea.

This =I=Munda gang is one I'm enjoying see develop.

Well yeah, I know they do. Really funny you should say that, because I searched for orlocks on necromunda, just to check if anyone had them available yesterday (I was wondering if they would make good mercenaries.) and I saw a couple of just the miniature you mentioned.

Bottle, I really would appreciate an in process pic for each of the models. Something maybe pre-limbs so we can see how the torso is put together. It is always great for me to find new sources of inspiration to exploit, not having much creativity in that respect myself
