I'm planning on running skulltaker in one of my lists for a tourney tomorrow, and had a quick question about challenges, as he mush challenge, and his KB ability only works therein.

If skulltaker charges a hero or lord who has not joined with a unit, is it automatically a challenge, do I need to declare a challenge, or is no challenge possible since their isn't anyone else for either to fight?

Overkill - if I challenge a rank and file unit, and the opponent accepts with a multiwound model, does killing blow do all the wounds toward combat resolution? For example, skulltaker issues a challege, a hero with 3 wounds accepts. Killing blow comes up, does that count as 3 wounds by itself toward combat resolution. The other wounds go toward overkill, if I understand it right. What happens if he gets multiple killing blows, does each count as 3 wounds?

If a model is independant for some reason, but not a character, can you issue challenges, and can he accept? I know there are some units out there that are 1+, but you don't have to make them a champion.

A) should you charge a character who is not in a unit, there is no need to declare a challenge, seeing as your somewhat already in one. Declare one anyway, though, for completeness's sake.

B) Overkill: Yes, it does count by itself. Killing blow wounds are just like normal wounds, except with Killing Blow USR rules.

C) No. Unless it is either a champion or Character, no challenges may be made and accepted.

good luck at the tourney

Some people play to win, some people play for fun. Me? I play to kill toy soldiers.

A) Always issue the challenge because your rules say you have to.

B) Every time you hit a KB attack you get the models remaining wounds in resolution, i.e 2 2 2

C) Gotta challenge a champ or character.

Bat Manuel is correct.

Particularly B). Killing Blow always offers the full yield of their wounds for each one.

Or rather, the full yield of their remaining wounds at the start of that CC phase; if they lost wounds earlier (e.g. lord down to 2) then you would get 2CR for each KB that is succesful (i.e. ward save, if any, failed)

This is explained in the BRB FAQ Part 2.

But what happens when the one challenged refuse?
does skulltaker lose his KB ability or does it only work if a challenge works?

If you want to be in a challenge, you must declare it. Although this makes no difference in round 1. When the support unit comes charging in and issues a challenge with its champion (to protect the general) or with a fighty character to protect the mage you just charge, etc, etc, you can safely refuse by pointing out you are already in a challenge. And they will just have to wait.

If you think you are too small to have an impact, try sleeping with a mosquito.
