AN DIEGO, Calif. — A San Diego-based Navy man is accused of shooting and killing a fellow sailor as they played a war video game. Authorities said Thursday that 25-year-old Clinton Echols was arrested on suspicion of murder after they found Luis Urbina's body in a San Carlos apartment. Acting Lt. Bryan Pendleton says detectives determined that Echols pointed the gun at Urbina and it went off as they played the video game. Pendleton says Echols called police around 3 p.m. Wednesday. He says the sailor did not immediately report the shooting and that the 20-year-old Urbina could not be saved by the time help arrived. Pendleton says Echols was arrested later that night after being questioned. The sailors were stationed on the aircraft carrier Ronald Reagan. http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,513975,00.html Maybe they were playing Pirates?

James Brady, Reagan's press secretary (iirc), was shot in the head during John Hinckley's attempted assassination of President Reagan in 1981. Brady was not killed, but was permanently disabled due to his head injury. His wife was the advocate behind the Brady Bill to insititute a federal wait period on handgun purchases.

I don't think this is so much incredibly ironic as it is a good six degrees of separation question.

That angry chick singer (Alanis Morissette) sang a whole song about how sad things are ironic (like rain on your wedding day), so this has to qualify as at least mildly ironic. And it might be six carbines of separation.......

Apparently, receiving a massive headwound can make republicans into democrats!
As William Casey once said, 'If you're not a democrat when you're young, something's wrong with your heart. If you're not a republican when you're old, something's wrong with your head.'
And, in another one degree of separation, William Casey ran Reagan's campaign in 1980 and was appointed the Director of the CIA by Reagan (Casey had served in the OSS in WW2). In order to have Casey on the cabinet, Reagan made the Director of the CIA a cabinet-level post. iirc, Casey is the only DCIA to have been on the Cabinet (at least at the same time). Casey was a democrat when he was younger and a republican later in life.

But nothing in that song was Ironic. In the least. Merely mild pains in the arse.
Irony would be, I dunno, taking precautions to avoid electrocution in the house to some extremes, then getting zapped by lightning the second you leave the house.

I was about to say that. Most of the things in the song don't actually fit the definition of irony.
Maybe that's the most ironic thing about it?

Depend on if you know this story....
American DJ type person (can't remember it 100%, and it could be urban legend I suppose) tore into Ms Morrisette about this, explaining the lack of irony in the song, and that this was precisely why people said Americans didn't get irony.
Except, Ms Morrisette is, erm....Canadian.
OH! THE BITTER PILL OF IRONY!

That's hilarious. Although of course, she's still "North American," so would that still count? I'm not sure how far that ridiculous stereotype is supposed to reach though. Are Canadians normally exempt?

Indeed, Canadians are fairly normal people, so are exempt from accusations of rampant thickery.

I don't think anyone really has to choose between irony and Tex Mex cuisine, although I think if pressed, I could guess which one our dear Frazzled would choose.
And although it's funny, technically, I'm not sure the story about Alanis Morrisette actually being Canadian qualifies as irony either.

Ah but it does. Kind of.
DJ was ragging on her for perpetuating the apparent myth that US Citizens don't get irony, and how she had let them down.
But being Canadian, the statement was Ironic in itself.

If it does, only sort of. There are certainly better examples of irony out there.
Not that I'm not saying it's not funny, I'm just saying it's not the best example of something that's ironic.
Going by the strict definition, I think it would only have qualified as irony if either the DJ had done it on purpose, and had an "ironic intent," or if someone expected the DJ to actually know what he was talking about, thus the revelation that Alanis Morrisette is actually Canadian would have been something that was contrary to what was expected.
The catch is though, I think if the DJ had known she was Canadian, but had said the same thing out of an intent to be ironic, it wouldn't have been as funny.

here's something ironic, Canada has laws that radio and TV must play things with a certain amount of Canadian content.
Alanis Morissette is Canadian but because her label and songwriter were American her stuff did not count as Canadian content.
