Is this related to them leaving Potomac Mills, I wonder? There was a thread on dakka about GW exiting all the 'Mills' malls over some sort of dispute. perhaps this is a store intended to at least kinda-sorta serve the same area.

This store is being staffed by a few Potomac Mills staff, so perhaps. As for being related to the MIlls situation and serving the same area, they failed to serve the same area as Mills. this store is 30-40 mile seperation from the Potomac Mills store..
It does serve an area that was kind of in limbo though.
some sort of dispute? Plain and simple Mills tried to squeeze Gw and GW told them to get bent.

Ah. Glad the Potomac Mills staff have an option for a new job, although I'm guessing their commutes are probably worse.
That's not too far of a move. The Potomac Mills store looked miserable to play in the few times I went there (usually if I was out that way for something else). maybe the new location will be better.
I'm around the beltway a bit so the nearest GW for me is the Blenn Burnie HQ if that's still open. I'd guess the Arundel Mills store went down, too, and there was a store in a mall near Annapolis, but then Farifax would be about as far...

I assume 'Nerd Parlor' means Game Parlor? I used to go to their Chantilly location years ago (mid-90s) when MTG was just getting popular. Nice enough store, althoguh I rarely played there as it was still too far away to be convenient.

You're up in MD? It is a bit of a trek. But it's about four or five times the size of a GW, and there's one in Woodbridge (right outside Potomac Mills) and one in Chantilly (right up the road from Fair Oaks). I used to work at the Chantilly store for a little while.
It's all around a better store, even WITH Rob's draconian rule about no items on sale ever no matter how ancient or worthless they are.

I've been out of the N VA / DC area in awhile. When did the Potomac Mills GW shop close down? I got in some good games with folks in that area. I know the Springfield GW store moved out of the mall into a large strip mall. Is that one still open?

They closed the doors on the 31 of Jan this year. The Springfield store is alive and kicking.. I worked at both the Springfield mall store and the Potomac Mills mall stores.. both were tiny. On a Saturday there was hardly any room to do anything.. Great for showing that there are lots of people playing, terrible if you want to try to get something off the wall.
Game Parlor is a decent place to play.. The woodbridge store has a very large gaming space, but getting any help, you have to chase the staff down if you want them. there is Also Eagle and Empire in the Springfield area and The Game Vault in Fredericksburg.. So, there are plenty of options, if you don't mind driving in traffic( DC traffic sucks.. )

Re the Game Parlor stores. Our local club, the IronFist League ( www.ironfistleague.com) frequents them. We're at both stores every Tuesday night and frequently on the weekends, come on down and play with someone besides your little group in your basement. We run leagues, campaigns, tourneys, and paly nearly every GW game plus many non- GW games. Helps when you've got as many players as we do, lots of variety.
Yes, they've had to change the hours. Maybe if those of you hiding in your basements came out to the stores more often, they wouldn't have had to do so. Anyways, the staff at Woodbridge have been very lenient regarding closing time. Register closes at 9:00, but we might not walk out until 9:30.
Anyways, we're always looking for fresh meat.... errrrr, new opponents, so check out our forum, come on out.

Looking at the map this is like 10 minutes up the road from Game Parlor.
This is so typical of GW, using an independent retailer to gauge sales in an area then plopping a store up the road from them.

Well then they should have kept it in the Patomac mills mall s then cause it was right across the street from Game Parlor Woodbridge. You logic just doesn't pan out here Kid..

I visited the store yesterday and spoke with the manager.
I've ran various leagues with the IFL at Game Parlor and told this to the manager at GW Fair Oaks and he was very positive on hearing that.
Apparently stores like GW Fair Oaks and the Sugarland Crossing one are "Recruitment Centers" that are there to attract new players. Any events or leagues run at independent stores, such as Game Parlor, could be advertised for at these stores so that newer players could go on to find a better store to call home.
Granted, I've really only been playing GW games for about 2 years so I've only heard stories of the "big bad GW" and how they used to try to force stores out of business and the like. After talking to the GW manager last night, however, it seems like the new store could result in more business for stores that are better able to host gaming nights and events.
But hey, after lurking Dakka for a while it seems like posting opinions that aren't based in any factual evidence is pretty popular.

The Potomac Mills store (likely all the * Mills stores) probably did get a lot of walk-in traffic and was relatively 'mom safe' (a big plus, especially at holidays, if 'mom' can stop in while doing other shopping and get a box of those 'little army men' her son likes to paint.
I would have felt very weird hauling an army into a mall to play, though. Then again, I tend to plan mall visits so I hit the book store just before lunch or eat at someplace outside the mall proper where I don't feel weird bringing my own book from home.
