And when you get there, look at the right side of the screen.

Here, I'll even provide you with a link.

I guess we know what the Gencon release is going to be now. I bet they'll be Mk II compliant right out of the gate, too.

Everyone was guessing a Retribution release for GenCon, but then Mark II came along and
no one was sure whether this would still be happening until they posted this teaser banner
on their website last Friday.

Break it down for me. Is this a new release? Meaning new models, new rules, new tactics to try out? Or is this something else because I've heard alot of talk about a new Faction of Nyss.

Plus I dont follow Warmachine since I play Hordes. I just know the fluff that runs through the Hordes story line.

thanks,

It's a whole new Warmachine faction featuring the elves of Ios. Eiryss, Aiyana, and Dahlia (the lesser warlock) are all Iosans. So is Goreshade, now that I think about it.

See, way back when, waaaaay before the Orgoth ever showed up in Western Immoren, the elves were the dominant race. They were so powerful, they decided it would be a good idea to bring their 9 gods from Urcaen (the elves call it the Veld) to Caen. So they did, and after their gods showed up, their spell exploded, destroying most of their empire and creating the Stormlands. Anyway, the survivors and the elven gods migrated west to Ios. They lived together for a while, until the Rivening happened.

One night, almost the entire Iosan religious caste went insane. Some people went looking for the gods to help out, but only Scyrah could be found and she was in a coma. Since part of Scyrah's domain was child birth, Iosan children are occasionally born without souls.

Ten years prior to the Rivening, humans received the gift of arcane magic from Thamar. Some elves put two and two together and decided that human mages must be what's killing Scyrah and made the other Iosan gods disappear. They formed the Retribution of Scyrah who is now one of the more powerful religious/political factions in Ios. They created the Mage Hunters of which Eiryss is a member.

Those who were closest to Nyssor left to go find him, and find him they did. These elves became the Nyss. But the Iosans never found out that Nyssor was found. An emissary from the Nyss was sent to Ios (with a cure for Scyrah, no less), but the xenophobic Iosans turned them away without speaking to them. Fast forward to present day Western Immoren, and Eiryss finds out that Nyssor is being held by Khador. It's all the proof the Retribution needs to gain enough political support and mobilize their armies for war.

If you noticed, in the past few WM/H releases there were a few models that had the rule "Mercenary - Will work for the Retribution." or something to that effect. Those models were eEiryss, Dahlia and Skarath, and Lanyssa Ryssyll. Mk II added Eiryss, Aiyana and Holt, and Cylena Raefyll and the Nyss Hunters.

The Iosans have warjacks called Myrmidons that are more advanced than their human and Rhulic counterparts. Nothing else is really known about them. Not even what they look like.

I head something along those lines about the Rhulic also becoming a faction. I wasn't sure about it though. Will the new faction of elves just be apart of Warmachine, or will they also add in a new Faction for Hordes?

Malfred hits it right on the head: we know so little about the Iosans (part of their earlier IK mystique due to their isolationism) that PP can pretty much do what they want with this release. Hopefully, the Retribution will be an unique playing experience.

When it comes to Myrmidons, the impression we get from the only source that talks about it, Doug Seacat, is that Myrmidons are not necessarily better than human and Rhulic warjacks. They are more efficiently built and do not run on steam, but he has flat-out stated upon questioning that Myrmidons hardly are "über-warjacks" (naturally enough, since the Retribution be too much out of synch with the other armies). Another statement from Doug states that while the Iosans have a fearsome reputation gained from their defense of their homelands, they might not necessarily be the allmighty sleeping conquerors that many of the folks on the PP forums assumed them to be - a lot of their military reputation has been gained from their mystique and vigilant border defense that leaves little information after engagements.

I've always loved the Iosan fluff. The different stories (especially the few details of the the expedition of Nyss to Ios) seem to imply that the Iosans buggered the whole thing up by themselves and that the Rivening, rather than being associated with the Gift, is an aftereffect of the destruction of the Bridge of Worlds and the breaking of the Lyossan empire. However, the self-delusional elvish supremacists in the Retribution would much rather confuse correlation with causation and blame the humans - it is so much easier! To that effect, they raise brainwashed Mage Hunters (form expendable soulless, occasionally) and send them forth into the world. The general xenophobia and idiocy of the Iosans also make sure that they turn the Nyss emissaires away, ensuring that not only do they not benefit from Nyssors' advise and plan to heal the Rivening, they also ensure that the Nyss stand friendless when Everblight awakens (coincidentally, Everblight was placed in Nyss lands by the Iosans).
Then, after the priests of the Fane of Nyssor flee to Khador and seek the help of the humans and Goreshade ensures that the god ends up in the keeping of the human faction that, while intending to keep him alive, to put it mildly does not have his best intentions at heart, Eiryss finds out about the whole affair and reports back.

The solution? Go to war with all humans! Score yet another point for Moron Elves. I believe that the advent of the Retribution as an offensive force is yet another nail in the coffin of the elven species, once again put in by the Iosans themselves. Go self-destructive delusional elves!

Gawd. If I had a weakness in fantasy gaming, it's elves. Elves and great coats.

I need another faction like a whole in the head. I'm going to go home and bite my pillow now.

Elves have to be angry, otherwise they would end up like the Lord of the Rings Elves at the end of the third age, just walking off to retirement. I hope their warjacks don't end up looking like Eldar wraithlords.

I would guess that Rhulic would get more of the pirate treatment - a group of mercs that you can field as a 'faction'. Which, is a good marketing tool. They can sell the models to people with existing armies and still get some people to buy the whole line to field as a new army.

That already exists for Rhulics in the form of the Searforge Commission; basically, anything with the word 'rhulic' on the card can be fielded as it's own faction...Units used to get AD for being a part of Searforge, but I don't know what's happening with Mk. 2 in that regard...

They get advance move ie can make a full advance before game starts. The commission includes all the Rhulic and Ogryn mercs.

I liked the Rhulic (dwarven) designs in warmachine, but not the current mercenary armies, nor the drilling jack.

If Rhul came out with their own army, I'd be back into warmachine pretty quickly.

On the other hand, Retribution sounds pretty cool as well., even if they're a bit nuts. Although I suppose if I can play Khador the Stalinesque regime, I can handle Retribution. I'll just paint them to be a slightly less crazy people.

I wonder what we're actually getting in September. My guess is just the starter box, I can't see them releasing the book before the MkII rulebook.

This is interesting. I think it might be possible to release a faction book that would be compatible with Mk I and Mk II.

All it would look like is that the IOS 'jacks would have higher RAT's and MAT's than the Mk I stuff, but when Mk II hit the streets, IOS would fit right in.

Really, all they would have to do is provide two point values and keep the stats and rules the same. Releasing the book in September is completely plausible.

I think the Sign and Sigil article in NQ 23 hints at a future Infernal (not "infernalist") faction. They would have lots of crazy looking beasts, if the Monsternomicons are any indication.

There's already a bunch of infernal models for IKRP. I wouldn't be surprised if the IKRP figures were slowly incorporated into the game. They're usually preceded by them being unavailable to order as IKRP figures. The Nyss Sorcerer is the next one to get the treatment.

I'm ressurecting this thread because PP updated their home page again with yet more info on the Retribution.

The most important bits are that the book will contain Mk II rules, but NQ 25 and 26 (July and September issues) will preview a few models with Mk I rules.

If you click on the banner, you get an image of the book cover, though it reveals absolutely nothing about the faction.

You've been mis-informed. Matt Wilson has come onto the forum to say that they have implemented an advent calendar of sorts on that clickable banner with new content being released daily from the complete cover art, to pictures of the miniatures etc.

So that picture of the symbol is merely a single portion of the cover art, where more will be released over the coming days. For some reason I am thinking of 12 (bits for the total cover) but I could be making that up entirely.
