Nasty Nob on a Boar

I really like the GW Realm of battle board and have seen some people here do some great painting/modeling with them.
When reading a few BatReps though, it occurred to me the boards themselves give an advantage for ranged weaponry - namely because you know exactly how long/wide each piece of the board is. Most of the tables I've played on have battle mats, or just 6x4 painted with terrain.
Anyone else have issue with this, or since both sides can use it does it not really give an advantage to either side?

Honestly, if you cannot eyeball basic ranges, you are in the wrong game. It's so very easy to work out vertical and horizontal range (Hmm, Ok I am about a Quarter in and he is also a Quarter in he must be around 24" away then) and to work out diagonals requires 10 year old level math.

I have a similar issue with an urban themed board I am about to make.
I want to use mdf that has a bathroom tile pattern pre cut. 6-8" tiles iirc.
Shouldn't be too much of a problem, as said above 'Everyone has the same advantage.'

I'm with MDG on ranges.
I spent over 10 years in a job that used 6" measurement multiples. 'Guessing' ranges has never been an issue.

Doesn't that mean you spent 1 and 2/3 measures at this job?

Estimating ranges and 'guess' weapons are vestigial remnants of 40K's design heritage as a toy soldiers game.
IMO the rule adds nothing to the tactical fun, particularly when there are many ways to fudge the guess -- for instance when playing on boards of known size tiles, or by measuring something you are allowed to measure and eyeballing nearby landmarks.
I would not be unhappy if the rule were dropped and measurement was allowed at any time.

Actually, Malf, it was OVER 10 years. 12 and a bit to be precise. So more than two measures.
Ceramic tiles. We did 6"x6", 6"x12", 12"x12", 12"x18", 18"x18" and 24"x24".

Meh. You soon learn the limits of your range if you play long enough.
I used to be a dead eye shot with Empire Artillery, so much so I stopped using the army as things became fairly boring (being jammy with overshoot, bounce and scatter didn't help!)
And as Old Man Ultramarine said, both sides have the same advantage, thus negating said advantage.

I've got a city fight board with 12"x12" tiles. Really haven't had any issues with "knowing" the ranges. I usually point out the uniform size of the tiles before the game, just to keep things fair.

Back in the day when I had more terrain than most FLGS my 2 city fight layouts were 12"x12" and 24"x24" blocks, i would always let my opponent know, it helps new players a lot, even if i dont need it.

THE HORUS HERESY: Emprah: Hours, go reconquer the galaxy so there can be a new golden age. Horus: But I should be Emprah, bawwwwww! Emprah: Magnus, stop it with the sorcery. Magnus: But I know what's best, bawwwwww! Emprah: Horus, tell Russ to bring Magnus to me because I said so. Horus: Emprah wants you to kill Magnus because he said so. Russ: Fine. Emprah's always right. Plus Ole Red has already been denounced as a traitor and I never liked him anyway. Russ: You're about to die, cyclops! Magnus: O noes! Tzeentch, I choose you! Bawwwww! Russ: Ah well. Now to go kill Horus. Russ: Rowboat, how have you not been doing anything? Guilliman: . . . I've been writing a book. Russ: Sigh. Let's go. Guilliman: And I fought the Word Bearers! Horus: Oh shi--Spess Puppies a'comin? Abbadon: And the Ultramarines, sir. Horus: Who? Anyway, this looks bad. *enter Sanguinis* What are you doing here? Come to join me? Sanguinius: *throws self on Horus's power claws* Alas, I am undone! When you play Castlevania, remember me! *enter Emprah* Emprah: Horus! So my favorite son killed my favorite daughter! Horus: What about the Lion? Emprah: Never liked her. Horus: No one does. Now prepare to die! *mortally wounds Emprah*Emprah: Au contraire, you dick. *kills Horus* Dorn: Okay, now I just plug this into this and . . . okay, it works! Emprah? Hellooooo? Jonson: I did nothing! Guilliman: I did more nothing that you! Jonson: Nuh-uh. I was the most worthless! Guilliman: Have you read my book? Dorn: No one likes that book. Khan: C'mon guys. It's not that bad. Dorn: I guess not. Russ: You all suck. Ima go bring the Emprah back to life.
