Let's face it; most of the players out there just have to have most of the new models when a new model comes out for their armies. Now I've found a reason: The Mentor Legion chapter of Space Marines. I've read over the Lexi and have seemingly fallen in love. Created out of the 26th Founding they are chapter 888, replacing the fallen (not to be confused w/ the Fallen.) Star Scorpions.

This gives me the perfect reason to buy those new models that are released as the Mentor Legion is known for beta testing weapons, armor, and etc. before they are widely used.

So, here are my questions:

~ Have you ever seen anyone field this army?
~ Does anyone have any more background information on the chapter itself?

Thanks!

-J.

I have 10 Tac Marines, a Predator and a Captain painted as Mentors. Sadly, they are 2nd Ed marine models, the original dome-toped Predator model and a Mark VII armour Captain.

It would be nice to use new models, but I cannot justify the expense of swanky new models. I have AoBR on the way, but that will be adding to the Lamenters portion of my army.

I use the fluff from WD (I think it may have been WD98 - I first ever saw it in the Compendium) which you seem to be aware of. I assume you know who Nisk Ran'Thawl is, etc? My personal fluff for my army mostly revolves around the Lamenters. The Mentors are there to learn about how to fight Tyranids following the Lamenter's 100 year penitent crusade against them and to assist the Lamenters with manpower as they recover from said crusade. I could not face the thought of 30-50 yellow models so I decided on a few Mentors too.

I plan on converting one carrying a Tau Broadisde railgun to be a Master of the Forge with Conversion Beamer for my Deathwatch army.

Man, I wish there was a real Black Library where I could get a Black Library Card and take out Black Library Books without having to buy them. Of course, late fees would be your soul. But it would be worth it. - InquisitorMack

Do you have any other information on Nisk Ran'Thawl?

My marines were painted as the mentors back in RT (after I read a 'Chapter Approved' article on them in WD.

They were still painted as them during the whole 2nd ed phase, but got stripped during 3rd and are being finished off with a different theme.

Mentor Legion is very rare, so a great choice to play.

Go for it!

Thanks John. Speaking of unique paint schemes, how're those Eldar of yours? Still rockin' them I hope.

Only what you can find on Lexicanum. If I manage to dig out my W40k Compendium I can tell you more, but I think it can all be found online anyway.

Actually, it was the German Lexicanum

http://wh40k.lexicanum.de/wiki/Nisk_Ran-Thawll

I'll translate it (badly) later on, if no-one beats me to it.

Mentors used to test out new equipment for terra, all of their units being 'on loan' to other chapters. This meant that individual marines had the a more wide and varied combat experience than many other chapters. all of this data was compiled into a databook whn they returned to the legion. they are masters of strategy.

I seem to remember something about them working as squad leaders for the Ig?

Now GW has retconned them to be a main fighting force, just like all the other vanilla marines.

Nisk Ran Thawall is the mentor chapter master.

Got all that from the Lexi.

I also translated the German version of the Lexi and it states the same thing as the US version. I was asking for any further details on the guy as I wouldn't find there.
