Basically, the biggest difference you're going to find is between the full-time painting services, like myself - BK Army Painting ( http://www.bkarmypainting.com) and those who are doing it in their spare time for a few extra bucks. It's all about priorities, and knowing the priorities of the person you're hiring to do work for you. Since this is my only source of income, taking care of my clients is my number one priority. Doing this full time means I take this seriously, and you can feel comfortable with the transaction. It also means that I spend a decent amount of time on things like maintaining a website, communicating with customers, etc. Having talked to some of the other full-time painters out there, notably Brandon from GMM and Shawn from Blue Table, I think we'd be in agreement about that.

BK (Centurian, above), GMM, Blue Table and Middle Pillar Path are all top notch individuals I've dealth with (not as a customer, though). I hear good things about Brand X Painting, too.
I agree with Centurian, re: Full Time painters. Everyone I referred to above fits that guideline.
Adunaphel's Painting Service does good work & Karl is a top notch guy. I don't know if he's a FT painter or PT painter, though.
I *KNOW* there are more, but those are the only ones who hit me off of the top of my head.

Cent and MM have it all covered pretty well, but I will emphasize that full time = you will see your stuff again because no army you could send is worth enough in retail value to skip town with and flush our client base down the toilet. When you work with individuals doing it for spending money, you run that risk.
Not that there is anything wrong with those types, we all start there, just be careful.
