I've got in my grubby, little mitts three AoBR boxes of Orks. I understand the PK thing, but I don't have a whole lot of time for mass conversions. I'm basically putting the whole thing together for a break from Spaz Marenz. Aside from Trukks and maybe a BW, what does the Dakka community recommend for rounding out the force?

For simplicity, the total models are:
2x Warboss w/ PK and TL-Shoota (going to have both count as having all the bells and whistles of wargear except for bikes)
54 Slugga Boyz
6 Big Shoota Boyz
15 Nobz w/ Big Choppas and Sluggas (counts as TL-Shoota on all of them)
9 Deffcoptas w/ TL-Rokkit Launchas (might have them count as having Buzzsaws, too)

Well if you understand you need Nobz in da units of boyz wit PKs, to round out the force you need, imo:

Lootas, Burnas, stormboyz and/or kommandos
(Basically some elite/special purpose troops funkiness, choose which you intend to go with for now and style around them, I'd suggest lootas or kommandos)

Killa Kans and maybe some dreads
(kans fer shooting stuff and being a wall of metal goodness, I sometimes take a single dred wit 2 flamers to carve up enemy troops and disrupt)

I'd like to avoid Kans and Dreads if at all possible. I like the idea of Kommandos lead by Snikkrot.

London (work) / Pompey (live, from time to time)

just to question here, but if you dont want dreads is it simply because of the existing deff dread model?

take a look at the pic in my gallery, those were made using parts from the black reach dread and a kopta.

i would say lootas to start with, a nice solid unit of 15 would help alot.
allthough due to the contents of the box you will need to buy 4 box's to get enough for 16 of them.
allthough, you then have enough parts for some burna boyz (not a bad unit, can work well)

try adding a big mek with kustom FF.
you can then chop the klaw of the then spare warboss, use it on a nob in a boyz unit.

2 box's of gretchin will give you a nice screening unit.

snikrot and some kommandos will also work well as an ambush unit.

Suffused with the dying memories of Sanguinus, the warriors of the Death Company seek only one thing: death in battle fighting against the enemies of the Emperor.

Dreads and Kans don't fit my Orky Vision, so to speak. I don't think the Deffkoptas do, either, but I have them.

I've been toying with the idea of the Big Mek or Mad Dok Grotsnik (once I get some vehicles).

The whole conversion thing is something I don't think I'll be doing much of, unfortunately. My confidence in that department is abysmal. It doesn't help that I'm highly critical of my work.

I just really don't want this particular army to get out of hand like my marines did. I have something around 7k points of Imperials laying about the apartment in various conditions of put-together-ness.

When I first started my Orks I started with the Mad DoK to boost my points up to a playable level, and get some experience in with the orks.

My suggestion if you wana go "Orky" is stormboyz. There doesn't seem to be to much love for them here on Dakka but a squad of 15 (minimum) to 20 has really done a difference for me.

Also if you do go snikrot and commandos (as I have done as well, a joy to use) make sure you get some burnas. An absolute necessity when sneakin about.

Battlewagons are also really awesome when coupled with a big meks KFF.

Just my opinion.

Buy a painboy. Put it in the nob squad and then give them all cybork bodies that he allows and they're some mean killers.
If you want to go further buy a box of nobs for all the different other gear they can get and equip them all uniquely so you can spread wounds.
It's not hard to just chop arms off the AoBR nobz and stick a Big choppa arm on, or kombi weapon, PK, etc

You must understand that for an ork a day that starts off killing something with your bare hands, and ends with those same hands being chopped off in battle, is a good one.

What's betta than one choppa? Two choppas!!! Two choppas is one more than...is one times da...IS LOTS MORE FUN!! WAAAAGH!!!

Yeah get some painboy models. Get Lootas and use magnets so you can make them burners when you want. I cannot stress how Lootas will make your day happier.

and if it seems too confusing here is how it works.

Played my first game the other night, made a couple of mistakes here and there, but overall: Holy crap NOBZ. I did end up getting a couple of painboy models and a box of nobz for the bitz (and extra bodies). They won the game for me.

That being said, I also purchased a Big Mek with KFF. I did not use him in said game since it was only 1000 points. I'm giving in to the conversion fest that is the Ork, and will be kitbashing an AoBR dreadnought, deffcopta, and other bits into a deff dread and scratch-building some kans. Which of the two would make for a good Troop choice, though? My first instinct is the Dread, but I'm not 100% sure. Also, how would you recommend kitting the Kans? The Grotzooka looks really fun, but it's obviously the spendy choice.

Grotzookas are good. You are giving up your awesome BS3 though to use it...

Especially with lootas on the field, you really don't need rokkits or BS on them. Skorchas though are great also for when you find someone getting too close.

One config I like (which I usually avoid doing this for all other weapons in a squad) is mixing the weapon loadout for KKs. Unit of 3, 2 with grotzookas and one with a skorcha. You have some good mid-range with 4 small blasts and if someone infiltrates/out-flanks right up to your KK to where you don't want to shoot with the grotzookas because you don't want scatter on your boyz nearby, you can use the skorcha.

You've confused me with this bit.
