OK, i been thinking green. So i want to take that stuff most of you will trash to recycle it myself. I am not paying much , lets say .5 for small sprue , .10 for large sprue or maybe i can trade lose ultras for them, if you want to freebie them to me then i am ok with that also.... trying to help mother earth here, maybe i will get enough to melt it down and sell it back to gw and donate the money to a cause.....I doubt i would get much but i am helping with that trash. If by some reason this causes you to recycle then i have done enough with this. Rod

Most production companies won't take sprue material of any kind back, just so you know. There are constant minor changes in batches, and introducing old batch product can cause issues.
Recycling is your best bet.

Just lose one part marines primed.....Trying to get this stuff off the streets. My father is an environmental chemist and spent most of his life trying to get chlorine and harmful materials off the streets. Now that he is dying i am conscious about my carbon print. I am a vegetarian. We will see how long change last. not looking to trade my collection away , i got lose stuff and just pocket change to spend. This is more of the people getting rid of something they would trash so that it would not end up in the landfills.
I figure i would cut it up, pile it , then decide how to recycle or maybe sell it in quantities to a new mini company etc, putting the money to a good cause.

Wargames Factory have a plan like this.
GW don't generally want your leftover sprues. WHW may still have a bin for dumping it into, but since they are in a different country, and the carbon cost of flying my kilo or so of sprue to britain in return for an assuaged conscience is nowhere near balanced, I'll continue to turn it into my recycling centre (where all plastics in my area are recycled).

Yeah it's a great idea Rod, but Wargames Factory already do this.

Kind of.

Oh really Tek , i did not know that. Was just going to collect them and recycle them. was thinking of melting them and making them into pellets to sell to Modelling companies. But as some in this thread stated already it is not efficient to ship and companies wont buy the sprues, so it may be better for everyone just to ignore shipping it to me and recycling them yourselves. Sorry, i was just trying to start something good.
P.S Tek I found what you wrote about , interesting so i am posting the link here. Makes you think why GW does not do something along the same line.

Rod,
Taking a sprue cutter to them and clipping them into little bits produces some great rubble as Ifurita mentioned above. Providing this as a service/product for lazy gamers or those that don't have the time or inclination to do it themselves would be a way to recycle this extra plastic. I'm using mine for conversions and basing material, so no loss there.

What harm can it do to find out? It's a question that left bruises down the centuries, even more than "It can't hurt if I only take one" and "It's all right if you only do it standing up." Terry Pratchett, Making Money

Surely the enviromental cost of shipping empty sprues to you damages the enviroment more than simply throwing them away...it would be more costly to ship the sprues to you than the prices you're offering.
Your heart is in the right place but it's not really a logical idea.
Also i highly doubt you can just melt down the sprues and re-use the plastic and even if you could games workshop wouldnt give a good price as they are too money hungry.

As an Ork Player, I am always thinking GREEN.
Take those sprues and clip off all the circular bits. Then use these as Rivets on any of your Orky Scratchbuilds! I am sure you can think of other ways to use these as well.

In general, I like to reuse the trapezoidal cross-sectioned sprues to provide wall / plate stiffening in my scratchbuilds.
GW switching to rounded sprue is actually less helpful for me, but as I have plenty of old sprue, this isn't a big deal.

Oh yeah, melting styrene produces some nasty gaseous by products. I'd be VERY careful, even with a mask, if I tried that at all.

I have gotten a lot of people to send me sprues, mostly free from people that are moving, and i love the basing idea as i have not based any of mine yet. About shipping polluting more, you can look at it this way. The trucks/planes are coming here with or without the sprue on board, i don't know how much more pollution the sprue on board will add because of its weight, but i am sure is minimal. Yes , 2 pounds of sprues has been about 4 dollars so far in state, so being cost efficient to send is the only issue to me.
I love that people are giving ideas in a positive way on this thread on how to do their own recycling. I have asked for them at my gaming store and got lots of them , most of the people there did throw them in the trash anyways, and with the rush to buy IG there are plenty more sprues to come around.
railgun, I believe that happens if you melt it at a higher temperature then needed to reach a melting point, not sure, my chemistry is weak unlike my father.
I would appreciate from those who already recycle their sprues some pictures of what they use them for, is ok to post on this thread, see if i can emulate what is in the pictures. monkey see monkey do. I think this thread is better served now by moving it to an idea section of the forum.

I am not a chemist, but melting plastic will definitely make some really harmful fumes. Using plastic weld I can smell these chemicals in the air.
When modeling in general an open garage is ideal, if you don't have this I recommend keeping a fan on at all times.
In terms of the being "green" aspect of this, there is no way you will not incur a larger "carbon" footprint than just throwing them away.
If anyone is interested take a look at the local food revolution in California. There is nothing wrong with local bought groceries, the problem is
this is not Europe. Having a dozen smaller companies do what one large company can do will inevitably produce more waste. I personally
despise Safeway, but their delivery methods are quite effective. If you wonder why they still have such a large carbon footprint, think about
how many stores Safeway owns, and how many people frequent their stores.
Overall your intent is good, but your application lacks research.
P.s.
The smell will most likely never leave your house if you melt it inside.

I was just reading up on polysytrene recycling. Apparently if you incinerate it at high enough temperatures the vast majority of the waste is water and carbon dioxide, some ash and there is some toxins but not much. If burned at lower temperatures with low oxygen... well stay away from that... bad times. But apparently its safe for landfills, though not biodegradable, and... if recycled its pretty much just used as fillers for other products rather than reused. However if its melted (and not burned) it can be reused for injection molding or whatever, but apparently this isn't popular. I gather that like most recycling big companies find it cheaper to aquire new raw materials.
And while I'm at it, I'm sending you a message, I have half a pound of sprue. Its all yours.

Great idea there rod, would take some major brainstorming to get it to work, plus the right (expensive) equipment to effectively melt down the materials without polluting yourself. Just a bit of information: one of my closest friends graduated with a degree in engineering, focusing primarily on propulsion. This caused him to deal alot with fuels and energy sources and he came up with a building that would be built over landfills and would collect all those harmful gasses that landfills give off (primarily methane). He actually designed a system that would collect the methane and use it as an energy source that could produce pretty decent quantities of electricity. I live in Northern CT so the landfill I see the most is the one right outside of Hartford. From his estimates, he claims that if the structure was implemented on that landfill, it could produce more than enough power to provide the whole city with electricity. The best part about this is that the process using methane gas has almost no negative bi-product (similar to using hydrogen gas to power cars). Maybe in the not-too-far-away future, we will start seeing these buildings pop up.

Thank , I will be taking more sprues at a later time as I am legitimately broke paying the shipping. i will be sure to start up again when i have some more money to cover the expenses. the whole injection thing would make an interesting hobby to learn. but i think i am going to base a lot of models , and come up with uses for them. so far i got about a trunk full of sprues. I think i bit on too much, without thinking too much of a good solution.....be assure they are not going in the trash. So far i am chopping them up into one inch pieces and boxing them up. I am using them as i need them , trying the scenery thing.
KingKodo, i like the idea of geothermal , putting power plants on volcanoes, is good endless source, but that still does not get rid of all the transportation pollution. i think nuclear is good too, if you can be safe with your waste.
