I don't know that Templars are really a great army to field for this (frankly I suspect lootas will just destroy anything in this format, but who knows) but that's what I currently have available. The relevant rule changes are: FOC is 1+ troop, 0-1 everything else; max 100 for a model; max 250 for a unit; no 2+ saves; max 2 wounds. So, if I want an HQ, a naked Reclusiarch or a cheap Castellan are my only choices.

Right now I'm looking at this:

Crusader Squad - 5 Initiates, 5 Neophytes, Power Fist, Meltagun, Frag Grenades, Crusader Seals, BP & CCW - 175
Crusader Squad - 5 Initiates, 2 Neophytes, Lascannon, Plasma Gun, Initiates with Bolters, Neophytes with BP & CCW - 121
Crusader Squad - 5 Initiates, 2 Neophytes, Plasma Cannon, Plasma Gun, Initiates with Bolters, Neophytes with BP & CCW - 126

Land Speeder - Multi-Melta, Heavy Flamer - 75

==497

The only swap that I'm really considering is dropping one of the shooty crusader squads and using the points to buy an HQ (probably a Reclusiarch, a Castellan would be silly with just 1 shooting squad) and beef up the other two squads with what's left. I could also, instead of taking the HQ, buy transports for the two remaining squads.

Any ideas?

Wondering Why the Emperor Left

Earth

You need an HQ and two troop choices to make a legal l

ist. Without an hq any army is illegal. So get an HQ in

this list! Also i belive that you need to take the emperors

champion in all black templar lists. Hope this helps.

I'd drop the Double Plas for the Chaplain, since Ld8 sucks when you're trying to zeal.

If there's no < 33 armor restriction, what about taking a Dread or Vindi and hiding the 10 man squad behind it as they move up?

This doesn't use the regular FOC. It's 0-1 for everything but troops (including HQ) and 1+ for Troops. The Emperor's Champion is not required in armies under 750 points (I forget if it becomes required at 750 or 751.) So, for this situation, it's a perfectly legal list.

There isn't a <33 armor restriction, but the no more than 100 points for a single model requirement kills all of our tanks except for a predator with an autocannon turret and nothing else. Good point on the chaplain. I'm so used to having a chaplain, or at least a EC, in a squad that I didn't even think about the fact that I'm going to be bouncing back and forth a lot at LD8.

Edit: I should probably put the list update in here.

I dropped the crusader seals since the Chaplain will give them to the squad, so they're largely wasted points.
I added 3 cenobyte servitors. They're individual models so (I would imagine) they don't bring my chaplain in as being over 100 points for a single model. If they do, I can just swap two more initiates into my crusader squads instead.

I tossed a krak grenade on the Reclusiarch just because I had nothing else to do with the points. I doubt it'll do much, but it's either that or an auspex.
Reclusiarch - Frag Grenades, Krak Grenades, 3 Cenobyte Servitors - 128

Crusader Squad - 5 Initiates, 5 Neophytes, Power Fist, Meltagun, Frag Grenades, BP & CCW - 165
Crusader Squad - 5 Initiates, 3 Neophytes, Lascannon, Plasma Gun, Initiates with Bolters, Neophytes with BP & CCW - 131

Land Speeder - Multi-Melta, Heavy Flamer - 75

Well, you have two choices. A chaplain makes zeal a guarantee for one squad, so that squad should be big enough to soak a couple casualties and still pack a punch. The castellan gives everybody his LD9, so that makes it easier for them to zeal across the board.

I would totally try to squeeze as many marines in as you can and then rush across the table with meltaguns. I wouldn't try to sit back and shoot at all.

Another choice is to take the emperor's champion and the cheap 10 pt vow (making him 100 pts) and then that lets you make an additional move at the beginning to get closer to the enemy if they have psykers! Actually, that seems like not a good idea now that I think about it because most psykers have 3 wounds and won't be in this type of setting, so maybe discount the champ.

My list would look something like this:

Chaplain (he gets a free power weapon and 4+ save)

8 Marines
Melta

8 Marines
Melta

8 Marines

Somethin like that, just a horde of marines, maybe even with all bolters.

I dont doubt that orks are going to carry the day in this setup, but for different reasions than you think. 60 naked boyz only cost 360 pts. You ought to focus on ability to take down numbers in this sort of tourney. As far as lootas go, taking a maxed out squad is going to cost and be ineffective. Lootas are dangerous when there are multible squads of them, and you are not going to see that, due to foc restrictions.

I like the speeder with the flamer and melta, its a good all around anti horde, anti armor choice, since the worst armor you will see is a dread with AV 12.

Ive really got to question the squad armament. Lazcannon, meltagun, Powefist? Why on earth do you need all that? Think about powerlists that you will see in this sort of game. No terminators, no tanks, no uber assault squads. The list to beat in this will be horde based. I would take flamers to deal with orks, and powerweapons to take down sisters. Other than that I cant see an abusive list that will rule the day, so if you run a balanced list, with some anti horde ability, you ought to be good.

O H I am in the Webway...

Just take the damn emperors champion. Arm the squads like so...

Emperors Champion

5 Initiates, 2 Neophytes, Meltagun, Meltagun, BP/CCW
5 Initiates, 5 Neophytes, Powerfist, Flamer, F/KG, Crusader Seals, BP/CCW
5 Initiates, 2 Neophytes, Missile Launcher, Plasmagun (All with bolters)

PF Squad handles infantry, the ML/PG squad handles MeQ targets, and the Doube Melta is for popping tanks. A 500 point game will be up close and personal, no worries about the meltas getting in range.

He who fights with monsters might take care lest he thereby become a monster and if you gaze for long into an abyss, the abyss gazes also into you

Another good idea may be to take a Rhino to use as an LOS/Charge blocker and for tank shocking.
