Hi everybody. I posted a little while back showing my attempts at painting some guard in a camo scheme. Although I got some encouraging responses, others pointed out that the scheme was not colorful for the WH40K universe. After that I had trouble coming up with a good scheme for officers to distinguish them from the other camo-ed up soldiers. Anyway, I made a second attempt at a color scheme and wanted some feedback before I strip my previous efforts and paint up too many guys. The pictures have my first attempt included so I'd appreciate some feedback about which looks better.

For my latest, more colorful attempt, I think I'm pretty happy with how the cloth of the pants and the shirt came out, but I'm not sure about the armor. Do people think the armor looks fine or would they make it a different color? Also, let me know if you like how the pants and the shirt came out and whether you think anything needs to be changed. Help me design the perfect uniform for the 17th Novrodian regiment, thanks.

Dude really, how are we supposed to even see the models. We have to have better pics than this before we pass judgement. All I can tell from these is that there are 2 guardsmen and some type of plant in the photo. Sorry

I don't know, maybe click on the picture and the larger size comes up? Though if you're too lazy for that, that's cool.

@bogaluboy- I clicked them, saw the larger size and still would like better photos. You can tell a bit, but it is difficult to see any details, and the lighting could use some work. I myself have great difficulty taking pictures that properly display my work, but using the macro setting on your camera is really the first and most essential step.

The missile guy is supposed to be the second part of missile launcher team. I figured that if you build stand up missile launcher teams you can make use of all the missile launchers from the heavy weapons teams.

The guardsman with the missile sort of looks like a cross between a Cadian & a Pratorein.
Also wondering if OP is asking which paint scheme he should use,if so I vote for the camo.

Ok,went back and re-read OP's first post, still belive the camo looks much better, however I can see that there could be some issues with distiguishing officers in a sea of camo grunts.
I would suggest color varients on armour for those minis who are not obviously officers of some sort ie: armed with power fist etc, and of course great coats & heraldy/insignias will go a long way in showing who's who.

Easy way to distinguish an officer in a sea of grunts: A fancy hat of some sort. Case in point, the commissars. Bionics and battle honors (purity seals, power fists, etc.) are an easy way to really make things obvious. See thats why I like Orks. Da biggunz da Boss.

I also couldn't agree more with the camo scheme. The red shirt looks like a WFB Empire gunner given a lasgun, a tac helmet and a missle. Hes actually to colorful, he'd get shot real fast.

i do ot think that the officer fits. in real life he'd blow his squads cover and get 'em all shot

Ok, I've taken people's advice and have decided to stick with the camo pattern for the Cadian look-a-likes. I've decided to remove the camo pattern from the armor though and make it one color to make it look different from the clothing. I'll post some pictures of those guys later.

I've decided to go with a mix of cadians and catachans for my guard army (mostly because I got the catachans on the cheap and I like the models better than most people). So now for your viewing pleasure I offer you some jungle fighters. Are the pants too deep a green? I tried using dark angels green and I know in the light where the photos were taken it almost looks black. Anyway, comments are appreciated.

I went with a realistic(ish) Arid Camo scheme for my Guard

As you can see I didnt go full Camo so there would be some contrast. To distinguish sergeants I gave them berets (maroon since they are paras). For the office I gave him a cape, extra insignia on his helmet and some bars around his cuffs.

Alternatively you could use greenstuff sashes around the waist colored red or something contrasting the green.

Ok, here's a group I painted last night with the officer front and center. I guess the whole chainsword, laspistol, lack of helmet thing will keep him looking different enough from the grunts. I still need to highlight the armor with some camo green, but I think he looks pretty good overall. Thoughts?

Please note - terms like 'always/never' are carried with the basic understanding that there are exceptions to the rule, and therefore are used to mean generally...

What I do for my officers is give them all alternative headgear (save for the Captain from the new Cadian Command sprue who's actually wearing his helmet). I further distinguish their standing in the chain by giving them specific headgear. My Lt's have berets, my Captains have peaked caps, and my Senior officers, like my Colonel, have field caps. I've also given the Lieutenant that I've completed a sash made of GS.

If you're none-too-handy with GS, then I'd just suggest maybe going to your local RT or Bitz dealer and seeing what they have for non-40K 28mm head options. There're usually some good heads you can find in boxes from other games, and you can use the leftover bitz to make some cool conversions. Most other 28mm games use pewter minis, but if you've got a pair of wire clippers and a ring file, it's no problem. You will need -some- GS though to fill in any gaps between pewter parts and the minis once you're all filed down.

EDIT: By the way, maritimes, love the CADPAT inspired theme mate. Looks really nice.
