Hi my name is Sarah, i've just recently got into painting miniatures. I've had a little experience in painting Space Marines, but a friend has just bought me these...

Angel Of Darkness -

Storm Steed (Nightmare)

Can anyone give me some ideas on colour schemes or some overall painting techniques/ tips to use on them? Or is there anywhere you would advise to look for inspiration for this kind of thing?

Thank you,

Sarah x

Here's a great place to start for techniques and the like...

As far as color schemes, start with anything found in the natural world first. Real bird wings, bat wings and a Color Circle to match complementary colors.

If you're looking for something more specific, blonde hair, off white/light tan dress, brown leather boots, pale skin and white wings with blue highlights. For the horse, I'm not sure yet. Hope this helps.

Welcome. It also depends on how you intend to use the figure: display, role playing, table top gaming. For a figure like that, blue robes, white wings, and brown sandals would be fairly normal. Look at some of the classical style paintings for some other ideas.

I've not seen the Storm Steed mini before but it was screams to me the Headless Horseman from the Sleepy Hollow film (Christopher Walken, Johnny Depp, C Ricci).

As said, real world style colours tend to work well, if you want to check how each look then google is your friend, you can allways compare the colours via that.

and welcome to dakka sarah.

Suffused with the dying memories of Sanguinus, the warriors of the Death Company seek only one thing: death in battle fighting against the enemies of the Emperor.

Very nice pic ^^^ that's exactly what I was going to suggest for the scheme. Don't know how confident a painter you are, but some object source lighting on that nightmare would look amazing

Ah thanks to all for the welcomes!

I really like both pictures posted for the storm steed, it's given me a few ideas of what look i'd like to achieve. Haven't quite decided how to do the Angel Of Darkness, I'm guessing painting her wings to look like real life bird wings would be pretty hard? But then again, i'm up for having a go at doing it if i can find a picture of some wings i can copy/get ideas from.

where ever Eldrad is...

Since its an angel of darkness, I would think black wings, with blue-grey highlights. Pale skin, and a dark red dress.

You could try black wings with a Metallic Medium and Blue/purple ink mix applied on the highlights for a subtle raven wing kind of look. Or thin it down and wash the black wings (with dark purple/blue highlights). More advanced could be the same recipe but use green ink instead and hit minor highlights after the blue/purple.

I still kind of see her as a Victorian figure so that's why I suggested the off-white/light tan dress.

I've done my wings (for a Hippogriff) in tan at the front, white for the middle band, and then a dark brown for the trailing feathers. Thought it turned out nicely.

Ah thanks for all the replies. I think i'm going to do the angel of darkness similar to this -

I would really like to have a go at painting the wings to look like real birds wings, so i think i might have to get another model and have a bash!

Thanks again guys, i'll see how I get on.
