Tobber1202 - Thanks! and Thing is right, it's been a beast to build!

I plan on finishing the build as soon as possible - truth be told it's been a love-hate relationship with this Thing - and then FINALLY start painting this little force of Betrayers...

Looking darn cool! Looks like a dark mockery of a Penitent Engine.

Will you be counting it as a Forgefiend?

Squigsquasher - Thanks!
Yes - this is my Forgefiend counts-as, the cannons are from that kit except I'm replacing the barrels and the ugly skull-mouth barrel ends as they didn't fit the feel of this guy.
My intent was definitely a Dark Mechanicus version of a Penitent Engine... I meant to have his legs hanging down and chained in, but lost them to my dog...

The remainder of the Forgefiend/Maulerfiend kit will become my Maulerfiend... modified of course! Though I intend now to paint this Legion before building anymore mosnter models - this Stalker nearly broke me!

Cheers!

Hi Miss Dee - Been experimenting with a bone and gold scheme... and a black and silver scheme... lots of experimentation but no real decisions yet.
BTW - love Babylon 5, the Shadows were great.

Cheers.

Talking paint again:

Bone armour with bronze trim, and maybe red shoulder pads... or green armour with gold trim - which one says Legion of Thorns?

(Sample pics to follow...)

PS - Something weird happens whenever I update - when I hit post the page jumps to some advertisement page away from Dakka but double posts - any way to stop this happening?

bigfish - Thanks for commenting - of course I meant GREEN shoulder pads (not red) - I have found a nice mix of Castellan Green darks and Nurgling Flesh highlights for the green, but still struggling with the bone - test mini hopefully tonight!

Me too bigfish

Well, it became apparent overnight that I am failing painting class atm!
To define that statement, I tried a bone recipe - gak awful chalky mess that was *slightly better* with a wash, but the big awful was trying to paint the evil bling on the CSMs, especially around the legs...
I'm too scared to post a pic as the resulting test mini will burn out your eyes and induce projectile vomiting...
The other thing is I need a faster method because I've promised my son he and I will fight Legion of Thorns vs Blood Ravens over Christmas break - nothing like a promise to an 11 year old to make a deadline!

So my fall-back is that I can paint darker schemes - see my Blood Ravens - so good bye bone and gold and hello Castellan green and bare metal - one last test mini (please Dark Gods only one more...)

Cheers!

On basing - have a 1/35th scale Merkava I picked up for $5 a year ago with the express purpose of basing... about a week after reading your post on using those bits.

Both of these guys needed some minor sanding and greenstuff repairs but finally they're getting paint!
The green is Castellan Green, and the roughly applied red shading is a mix of Baal Red Wash, Dark Flesh and a tint of Blood Red.

bigfish - the bone would have looked awesome but I personally couldn't paint it well, nor fast... and I would dearly love to have this force painted and done - Thanks!
This green is coming from the old Masterclass Mounted Chaos Warrior, so the highlights will be Nurgling Flesh (the old Rotting Flesh), with gold trim... Chaos Marine trim = frustrating!

Cheers!

Good looking lamby found this digging through dakka and read every page looking at all the inspiration you put out. I have a slight problem with the green as it looks too nurgley to me any way. have you thought about doing the trim in a metallic blue i think that would make them pop in my opinion. can't wait to see more.

alabamaheretic - Thanks! both for looking and commenting, I appreciate any and all c&c.

As you will have seen I have been back and forth over paint schemes on the Legion for nearly 2 years.
I have a tendency to over think and paint test after test...
After the failed bone/gold attempt (and a comment from my son - "Dad, finish the Chaos dudes so I can beat them up with my Blood Ravens!") I went for green because alongside red and blue it's the easiest base color to paint (for me).

Any green on a Chaos force is going to steer viewers to think 'Nurgle' - personally I have not really steered the Legion toward any particular affiliation, though this highlight layer of Nurgling Flesh has pushed them that direction for sure!
The green has a glaze layer to go, which will soften transitions and brighten it more, and then battle damage and a 'dirty' oil wash, which will darken it again - and the trim will be gold and silver, suitably grimy.

As well as paint, there's a rebuild of Sgt Slaughter in the works (after a dog related incident rendered him into component bits), a rebuild of the 3rd Terminator (I was never happy with it) and a lone special-ops style sniper.
Mmmm... maybe a mauler-fiend conversion, if I can recover from the extended nightmare that the Stalker build became...

Cheers!

Well I have faith in you about the less nurglefication process. my other thinking about the metallic blue was a odd nod to the legion they split from ( World Eaters if your still coming fromt aht route) I'm actually glad you did not go with the brass and silver motif to me they looked like Iron warriors minus the hazard stripes.

I am a big fan of green and silver though so that will look good i think and maybe for a touch of color toss in like one or two bits of another color or make the lenses a fantastic purple. Again just a thought and take it at your leisure.

Again keep up the great work.

alabamaheretic - Thanks for the faith - hoping not to disappoint!
(btw - I've dropped the World Eater splinter faction angle - too many Heresy Era World Eaters getting around at the moment.)

2 Stormbringer Havocs up to the same green stage - the mini-gun dude is still one of my better conversions (im-humble-o!)

Note the modelling touch-ups on the Flamer dude - covered over the too-obviously-converted-from-a-plasma-gun plasma coil bit and added a nice Dragonforge cable, and changed out the promethium tanks on the backpack - I intend to paint the ubiquitous 40k hazard stripes on the green bit on the flamer.

alabamaheretic - Thanks - lots of weathering/damage to come to break up the green!

No new pics (tomorrow!) but after green glazing the first pair I then spent 2 hours (!) painting the brown 'undercoat' on the armour trim - does anyone else find CSM 'evil bling' fethin tedious to paint?

Darker green after glazing, and brown undercoat for the golds... tedious...

next up - black undercoat the metal, then battle damage!

Hi again Dakka, long time no post... or paint.
But once again I'm back at the Legion, pics to follow (soon)

Lamby wrote:"...I went for green because alongside red and blue it's the easiest base color to paint (for me).

Unfortunately this statement turned out to be completely false - the green has turned into a 6 layer nightmare... 7 if you include chipping... 8 if you include washing... the list goes on.
On top of the green, the gold trim on CSMs is proving a tedious nightmare I hadn't envisaged...
After getting the two Stormbringers to pre-wash stage, and 4 others through the green process, I had a painting meltdown and had to walk away.

Lamby wrote:"...As well as paint, there's a rebuild of Sgt Slaughter in the works (after a dog related incident rendered him into component bits), a rebuild of the 3rd Terminator (I was never happy with it) and a lone special-ops style sniper.
Mmmm... maybe a mauler-fiend conversion, if I can recover from the extended nightmare that the Stalker build became...

So eventually the bitz for the 3rd Terminator have arrived after a trip to Australia and back to San Diego via Washington, so I've started the rebuild on him.
Sgt Slaughter may or may not get re-done - while I like his weapon, the stance is too similar to the other Havocs and I've yet to decide where to go with him.
The sniper is sitting awaiting green-stuff...
And this mauler-fiend... I'm going to paint the Stalker first before I start building another big mech - plus I'm hatin' on the armour trim too much atm to even contemplate the eventual painting of such a blinged up nightmare... though the new Chaos mutant beasty thingy has me thinking 'BITZ!' again...

So that's where the Legion resides atm... Thanks for looking.

Cheers!
