Looking really good, Dr H! :-)
As for my own entry, I got distracted and have not found inspiration to get back to it. Perhaps something will come to me, but at this stage I think I'm out.
edit: Few hours later, after digging through my piles of debris in the garage, I think I might have a new idea of what to do! Typical, no sooner had I given in.... :-P

Love the little guys as well especially the one with wings well I don't know what you have in store for the comp but if thats anything to go by should be interesting.
I have the same problem had a couple of ideas which seems like others had aswell so it was back to the drawing board then had another idea but trying to work it out was a bit of nightmare so still working on it.

Thanks for the confidence boost, lone dirty dog! :-) As of this post, 50% of the people voting agree with you :-P
I have two ideas, unsure which to go with. Deadline is a touch over a month away, so I might have time to do the more complicated one that fits in with my carnival theme, but I should probably do the easier one 'cos I have all the materials for it already... Perhaps I'll start both and finish neither? :-D
Automatically Appended Next Post:
Sorry to get expectations up, but I thought I'd disappoint everyone with something lame, so here I present to you my disastrous start on "Attempt 2".
Location is in the Underhive of Necromunda, so this will probably be an Archeotech Hoard "Territory as Terrain" to go with my power tap from the last competition and my giant mushrooms/fungus grotto. Main focus will be the legs, and they are the only bits glued in place, the rest of the debris is just to see how it looks. All the random coloured bits are from things I found in the garden when I moved here. Might not even use the head piece as it kinda detracts from the "What Happened?" ascept, or have it scattered away with the other bits of Archeotech that I'm thinking of making as scatter terrain to go with it...
Looks terrible with all the colours, but it'll get paint on it! ...and probably still look terrible
Two or three minis can stand comfortably on top of the legs on the feet platforms - one provides a bit better cover though :-P
...or I may abandon the whole lot. I've put a few pieces together for "Attempt 3", but it'll be much more work and I'm terribly lazy and sporadic in my efforts. :-D

Nice work on the distraction, trollmeat.
Nice parts for the latest attempt. Who or what is the donor toy/model? My first thought was Sky lynx, but it isn't.
How are you making this an accident, or is it the backdrop for an accident?
As I've reached the next major stage, here's an update; the wall is up...
A bit more info in my main blog, but there you can see the wall and the selection of pieces that will be strewn about.

Again, that looks really great, Dr H. So far I think you've got my vote :-)
Dr H wrote:Nice parts for the latest attempt. Who or what is the donor toy/model? My first thought was Sky lynx, but it isn't.

Apparently the donor is a Gojulas Giga zoid that I salvaged from a bin and cleaned with hospital grade disinfectant - batteries corroded and dirt all the way through its insides, missing arms/tail/spikes. Shame the rest of it wasn't there as I coulda made some money on ebay if I didn't mind passing off broken/rusted/partly melted junk :-P
As for how it could be an accident: I was planning on having just the legs sticking up out of the ground, as if some kind of Titan had fallen from the sky and either gotten stuck or spattered. In addition to this, the fact that the setting is in a Dome of the Underhive would really make it a "What the blank happened?" :-P
Would this fit the theme or should I move on to Attempt #3? :-D

@Dr. H--your piece is really starting to come together...love the detail work on the fence.
@TM--do you plan on adding any signage/decoration to the mecha legs?
@Cam--jeez. i should start working on hobby stuff instead of reading when i can't sleep...you are further along than i am, and my project is a fraction of the size of what you are putting together...
@CW--looks good! love the fence with the signs. i personally would paint the tubes more metallic colors, and some kind of goop coming out of the hole in the tank would look pretty awesome, as well. but that's me.

@GawdamSumbish I was going to have a dribble of goop, but in the end I was terrified of wrecking it (this is the first actually good piece of terrain I've ever built). Next time I'll experiment with the gloopy goo. As for the colours - I used every paint I have (my wife and I only have about six colours, we're pretty new to wargaming), but a trip to the local hobby store is defs on the cards!

The contest is "What Went Wrong!", so I'll let you decide what happened ;-)
I've been painting both it and the base and adding gubbins/miscellaneous debris, do I need to add any signs? I don't think posters/banners would work as it is meant to be off in some long lost dome somewhere deep in the underhive...

Gah 30 days =/
I may have to drop the graboid/cliff idea and go with something else, haven't had any motivation.
I'm thinking something that will tie in with my DZ/jungle terrain, so maybe an outlook/watchtower that was built on a hill and which as fallen off/down the hill due to erosion or encroaching jungle plants. Automatically Appended Next Post: Ok keep the jungle terrain drop the prefab DZ stuff for a minute...
I've kind of been wanting to work with aluminum cans as liquid storage tanks for a little while now... so I'll go with that. Obviously the tanks have burst, that's the accident. But what's the result?
Were they tanks of Agent Orange and the jungle just got prematurely defoliated in a much narrower region than it was going to be?
Or was it growth hormone/super fertilizer that was intended to accelerate the outpost/colony's food crops, and the jungle has seized it (by accident, or chillingly, on purpose!) and this particular foot square section of the board is just crazy overgrown with life?
The spilled defoliator would make a much more playable scenery piece, but the crazy verdant jungle tile could work too.
I figure this keeps things relatively simple while still being mostly/all scratch built. Can't decide on the contents of the tanks though.
Thoughts?

Thanks chaps.
Lots to comment on, lets see...
Trollmeat: Ah, Zoids. Never had any of them myself. I also see that the legs are the other way up to what I thought they were, accident makes more sense now. Good lick of paint. Keep at it.
Good progress Cam. Look forward to seeing that completed.
Chris: Good work. Especially (but not only) because of your limited pallet.
The rust colour is good. Consider adding some texture to the rustiest of areas.
Rivets worked out good. Nice use of straws, and the fence section looks good.
The numbers on the tank look a bit too crisp for such a dirty tank. Before the wash to make it all dirty you could have sponged or stippled on the blue of the tank, over the transfers, to make them look a little chipped/peeling.
A couple of things to keep in mind for the future (or even to add before the end of this competition).
Sad to see you drop out Fango.
Good ideas Grimdork. Both have their merits.
A couple of additions; For the defoliated idea, you could add a skeleton of someone that was standing far too close.
For the accelerant idea, I like the thought of killer plants growing up... brings to mind the day of the triffids.
And lastly, progress on mine:
I've started to add the plants and the scattered rubble.
Still more to add yet...

I don't know if I will manage to get this done in time but I have worked on it some more today.
I've got the frameworks completed today and will start adding the clay this week.
I've dragged me feet for so long because this is SO far out of my comfort zone, I was afraid I'd screw it up as soon as I started.
But anyway, here's a WIP shot of the standing stones and Easter Island style goblin right now.

Glad you like it, I was entertained by the thought when it hit me. :-P I have added a few tiny little mushrooms but I'm just not sure what else to do with it, I'd originally thought of making a few pieces of scatter terrain to go with it in the same line (random toys pulled to bits), but I keep getting distracted, so I think I'll have to shelve the towers for now and see if I make any more progress on it before the deadline (which is 00:00 GMT 29th March, btw. ~26 or so days remaining) :-D
Edit: Oh, that's right, I was going to add some ladders, but I figure people can climb it in-game they want just at a slower rate... and RIVETS! I've not added enough rivets! There, I have something else to add, but I think it is done.

Good luck with the sculpting, Eye'. Don't try to add too much in one go. Build up thick details in layers, otherwise you will start to distort it in the process. Add the finer details at the end for the same reason.
Grimdork: maybe have a rummage in your bits -box/-drawer/-chest/-room/-garage/-house (anything game for modelling) for something that may inspire you. That's what I did for my UFO.
Good work MT. Coming along well.
Good work Trollmeat. Good to have some fluff to give the piece some life. You could have added a fallen/broken ladder as an accident within an accident.
As for mine, I think the building is done (there's a few little tweaks to be done during/after painting). So this is how it looks pre-paint:
4 weeks to paint, I should be able to manage that... maybe...

That is brilliant, Dr H! The little plants on top of the walls with the wire aerial roots coming down remind me of figs and really bring it together. If you are as fast painting as you are building, 4 weeks will be plenty.

I'm still trying to come up with a good jungle-based accident that fits within a 1x1' area so as to mesh with my scenery project. I got my original idea, wandered off for awhile, then decided to change it in the last few weeks. That scene is great Dr. H, I may have to blatantly rip off the crashed plane thing.... as that would certainly be something that could happen in a jungle. I've got a 40k valkyrie that's never gonna see use in 40k... it would fit pretty well onto a 1x1' square, even with a bit of a furrow behind it. Should be a really neat piece to play around too since the doors and ramp open and it's kind of a wrecked transport jungle gym Time permitting I would do up another 1x1' section intended to line up behind the crash with a watchtower that was clipped and has fallen over backwards... I realize sinking a Valkyrie into some scenery and sticking some jungle plants on it after it's painted isn't exactly hitting all of the points of the contest.... but it may be something I can get done which is a bonus.

Looking great doc, paint's going to really bring that to life
A broken ladder will fit nicely in with the leg-towers trollmeat
Crashed valk seems like a pretty good accident to me Grim!
Planning to get some work done on the actual accident and the construction site this afternoon, but in the meantime a minor query for anyone with a view.....
Squared off roof for the brothel, or a cut-away roof to line up with the rest?
If you've read my blog you'll know I originally put in squared floors, then had to cut them down as I realised they looked awkward overhanging the edge of the diorama. Technically I should do the same with the roof - which will then follow the blue line visible on the plastic. I'm not sure that works visually though, not sure if having a cut-away roof like that looks a bit off to the casual viewer.
Any thoughts?

AHAHAHAHA! Ha! I've figured things out!
So, I knew I was going for a Dwarven Outpost/Volcano thing, but I was having trouble with figuring out what exactly I wanted to do for a 'What went wrong' theme and how big, and how much, and what with, etc. etc.
But cleaning out a bunch of old cookie packages (plastic stuff) gave me some neat shapes- one in particular that's a sort of channel between two lumpier parts- and so I decided to go a little Dwarf Fortress with it.
I'm gonna have that channelly bit be a lava spout, sort of like the runoff gates in a dam, only for molten rock. And someone's gone and built their house or shack or brewery right there in the way of the lava stream.
