OK. I am doing a huge conversion army. I am thinking of doing spears with the bolters (like custodes), or bolters on hands (like grey knights), or converting the space marine weapons to a pre heresy look, or have weapons strapped on underneath of their left forearms, or on the shoulder like predator....I also saw a conversion where the bolter was fused into a shield.................What would be cooler?

I am making a true scale 28mm pre heresy spartan (300) themed army, that are red & gold...I think spear & bolter might be too close to custodes....plumes & round shields will distance them from custodes....but bolter on wrist/glove will make 'em seem like grey knights....I am leaning towards bolters on shoulders, something new and not seen in 40k marines....wired to head.....

Vompire, welcome to Dakka. Please use punctuation in the future. You’re arguments will be sign with greater merit and you’ll avoid people calling you on it.

Bolter on spear. They are going to be holding spears anyway, right? Might as well mount the bolters on the spears. Just make sure they don't look exactly like custodes.

The shoulder-mounted bolter is generally only seen on inquisitors. Besides, why would you want a bolter on your shoulder if you are also using a shield that could interfere much of the time.

Do we have a reference for this?

Anyway, a shoulder-mounted bolter would work BETTER when using a shield, because you could shield yourself while still maintaining the ability to fire.

Many have done the spear bolter & gaunlet too.....I'll probably do a shoulder. The marines will have a large shield in left hand, spear in right, so a shoulder bolter (weapon) can fire OVER the shield if the marine is holding the shield up....a little wire will connect bolter to helmet, (the fluff part of this idea being the bolter is "linked" to the marines actual brain! and sees what the bolter sees through an optic connection and fires when he thinks it to!)

after tinckering with the spears and bolters and what not, the over the shoulder bolter wont work due to size, the spears and bolter size look silly, the gauntlet idea is also too big, so I will do a under arm (marneus) style bolter look, and with grenn stuff make arm starps, etc....That'll be unique for a whole army

I'd say strap a bolter to either side of the helmets!
