well, the crystal parts and the rods are the same material, so I would hazard a guess that they would have the same or very similar effect.

Just a thought, but the smooth surface of the plastic rod will likely just slide the wash around and pool up in places where it an no longer slide to. I don't think you'll get any good adherence. However, if you carefully hit it with some VERY fine grit sand paper, that could rough it enough for a little traction.

Of course, the opacity could suffer some, too.
