Ok so i remeber back in 3rd Ed the rules for deathwatch. I loved the concept. We all know that you cant use them any more, so i want to build a SM force modeled after Deathwatch (since you can still get the shoulder pads from GW) and create a data sheet to use in apoc. The thing is i also want to model them to be used as codex marines also. So heres my idea for the data sheet

Cost 100 + models

must include one captain\librarian\chaplain, one sternguard squad, and 2 tact squads.

all models in power armor and no jump pack have true grit

the captain/librarian/chaplain can have the normal wargear options and upgrades. The captain/librarian/chaplain also has the special issue ammunition exactly like the sternguard squad. The Captain can also take a command squad. The command squad is out fitted as per the codex. The command squad is also equipped with special issue ammunition and follow the same rule with it as the sternguards do. If any of the HQ and his ret takes a bolt pistol instead of a bolter they get special issue ammunition designed for the bolt pistol. The stats for all the special ammunition stays the same except the range gets halved (so kraken bolts would be 15", vengence 9" and the rest 12") and replace Rapid Fire with Pistol.

the sternguard come equipped with bolter and CCW. Upgrades as per codex except that Heavy Bolter with suspensor is added to the weapon list for +15 pts, any member in the squad can trade their bolter for a bolter w/M.40 targeter and stalker shells (works exactly like Sergeant Telions) for +10 pts. per model

the tactical squads come equipped with bolter and ccw upgrades as per codex except that the whole squad can be armed with one type of special issue ammunition for +5 points per model (ammunition is choosen from the sternguard list) if upgraded with special ammunition then the whole squad must fire that or the regular round when shooting.

if a devastator squad is choosen they come equipped with bolter and CCW and also have true grit but do not get access to special ammunition or the heavy bolter with suspensor field. They are upgraded as per the codex.

Assault troops get access to special issue ammunition designed for bolt pistols. The stats for all the special ammunition stays the same except the range gets halved (so kraken bolts would be 15", vengence 9" and the rest 12") and replace Rapid Fire with Pistol. All other upgrades are as per the codex.

All other units are as per the codex

So this is my idea for a whole army. This should be easily changed if all you wanted was one squad. I guess you could either take a captain with a command squad and use him as an HQ or just take a sternguard as an elite if you only wanted to use a single squad of Deathwatch.

Right now i really dont know what to do with the vanguard veterans. The old deathwatch veteran rules were pretty much the sternguard and vanguard combined. I would say that either dont use vanguard vets or combine the 2 veteran sqauds into one (pretty much give vanguards the special issue ammunition rule). My vote is gonna be to not use the vanguards for 2 reasons: a. That type of power in one unit makes them really powerful and possible overpowered and 2. Deathwatch dont need a Heroic Intervention they are the intervention.

Well let me know what you think and if you would allow something like this in a friendly game.

Ok so after talking this over with some friends i decided to move the M.40 targeter with stalker shells from a tactical squad choice to being a devastator only choice.

Where ever the Emperor needs his eyes

4th Ed SM Scouts with M.40s and Stalker shells. Normal Scouts probably wouldn't be sent to do DW duties and DW Scouts would be normal Battle Brothers that opted out of Power Armor in favor of lighter gear they can sneak around in.

I would love to use my old Deathwatch squad again.

I do miss having 2 HB though with the special ammo. That was fun.

Heh. Just do what I did - go and make a whole Deathwatch army!!! I've got a Deathwatch Command Squad, 2 Deathwatch Tac Squads, a Deathwatch Assault Squad, a Deathwatch Devastaor Squad and two Deathwatch Terminator Squads.

No actual rules, but who care? They looks great.

Well I kind of moved near Toronto, actually.

Does 40k even have True Grit anymore? I think they just give everything 2 attacks now.

Captain or Codicier
Command Squad
Sternguard price. Meltabombs extra for whole squad. no Bikes.

Elite
Deathwatch Veterans
Rending (True Grit, Special Ammo used in combat)
+5 Points each, includes meltabombs.

Troop
Deathwatch
Same as Sternguard minus some options + Suspensors.

Fast Attack
Vanguard Assault w/ Meltabombs

Heavy
Devastators w/ a cool name
Oh man. Maybe bring in regular SM as support. Or else lose the special ammo. These guys should be like Long Fangs. They are not just a Purgation Squad, they have to have a reason and a fluff role for all those Heavy Bolters.

I still like the idea of Deathwatch Scouts, maybe use them with Space Wolves rules or Dark Angel rules. Plus Stalker Bolts, and the M.40s. Maybe have the Sgts get special rules similar to how pathfinders or Sgt Telion works.

I plan on just using the above rules to play a deathwatch list if my opponent lets me.

I plan on modeling everything with both boltpistols and CCW's ontop of the bolter it comes with.

@tacoblake- only space wolves and the DH codex has true grit in it. also only deathwatch veterns had access to the HB w/ suspensor and all the special ammo. whereas regular troops could get one type of ammo. I have the old rules for deathwatch and thats what i based these off of

My I plan on running is

Kantor
1 squad of termis

2 8 man sterngaurd with HB

3 10 man tac with multimelta and flamer

2 assault squads

1 LRC
