Hello, i have succesfully traded once here, and have another 2 going through. I was just wondering how the community deals with trades that for whatever reason don't go as planned - another trading site sets out its stance very clearly - i cannot seem to find anything similar on Dakka, could someone point me in the right direction please.

Thanks

There really isn't a 'formal' system here on Dakka.

If you end up having a problem, state the issues at hand and we'll help the best we can.

However, all trading on Dakka is 'caveat emptor'.

Having said that, I can't recall having that many trading problems at all here on Dakka.

Still, if you're at all worried about such things, you might try sticking to Bartertown, where the Mods will aggressively help you solve any problems that arise.

MagickalMemories in particular is a pitbull! (In a good way, of course!)

Thanks Alpharious - I think there is a nice feel about this site and do trust my trading partners - just looking for some reassurance i guess, i am a member of BT & RM but have only conducted trades through this site thus far.

I've engaged in three trades on Dakka, and have had no problem. Surely if there is any hassle, you should be able to get it cleared up pretty easily. Not like some of the horror stories I've heard about ebay.

If a trade is confirmed to be exposed as a scam.

I suggest the mob solution . That is to give out all the info [ email / real address / phone number ] And we go hunting depending on which dakka member live closest to the scammer.

That or we send the info to the local police.

Wouldn't giving out personal info be against the sites privacy rules??

So is scamming imo .

If someone wishes to scam and break a contract, then his personal privacy and rights should be nullified.

IMO you are absolutely right - name, shame and more, but the site has to conduct itself legally and in a way that makes everyone happy to return without the threat of threats

but the way i see it, since scams are premeditated ,they arnt a user so to speak to start witih . Thus not sharing the same legal benefit lol.

Sure i guess, though my cousin is the one that is good at dealing with trades.

I have been scammed for $1k + -_- last december ( but i have learned ALOT now)

With all honesty, prevention is the key . that and paypal always have unfair advantage towards buyers.

Just to be clear on what Alpharius said:

Dakka is not a trading site. We offer the swap shop forum merely as a convenience to allow users to arrange swaps between each other but we do not have any protocols in place to protect you from each other.

In other words, BUYER BEWARE! You are assuming all the risk when you engage in a trade with a stranger over the internet.

With that said, if I do get multiple reports about a user scamming others, I will do my best to make sure that user can no longer access Dakka. However, action can only really be taken if the scam has been pulled off enough times that I can verify that it exists. . .so again, BUYER BEWARE!

Considering the amount of trades that occur in the forum, we do have a very low rate of complaints which leads me to believe that the vast majority of people involved with trading stuff are genuine and legit, but if you are really concerned about being scammed then you are much better off using dedicated trading sites instead.

No the payment went through (paypal)

It was then reported as that account was hacked / stolen.
And the payment was reversed.

There were SO MANY signs that i shouldnt have ignored . But like i said i was tempted by the money lol

Send the info to the local police and contact the post master general. Do not get involved in a situation where you can be found responsible for someone being or claiming to have been terrorized.

I was scammed once a couple years ago by a kid on here. I don't remember what all it was for, but this kid was "selling" a number of items. Myself, and a few other people "bought" these items from him. Several weeks later, no one had recieved a thing, and this kid had dissapeared.

One of the people who had paid the kid off had managed to somehow dig up his phone number, and got into contact with his dad. He was able to get his money back. I attempted to contact him as well, but since I lived in Japan at the time, I was never able to get ahold of them at a good time, so I eventually just let it go. It was only $60, and in the grand scheme of things, not that big a deal.

My advice now about dealing with trades. Ask for some credentials. Ebay account, other succesful trades that have been done on here, anything like that. Then make sure you use something like Paypal. That way if they do screw you over, you can file a complaint against them, possibly have their account shut down.

When trading through unregulated sites like this, there is very little recourse you can take if you get screwed over. Maybe you can get lucky, and get some contact info. Report tem to the police for fraud, something like that. But most cases you're just gonna end up high and dry.

But ....... It's not common on this site according to the mods so maybe this should become a thread of its own and not to scare traders (including me - i have 2 in progress at mo!!)

As its own forum peeps like LunaHound, djones520 can tell pll what happened to them and a general advice on trading section - do's and don'ts could be established

Adrift within the vortex of my imagination.

Dakka is a low risk site for trades because it is a community. This is no guarantee but I would generally be happy to ship first to any person here who has been here for a long time and has a good reputation, even if they are unknowns for trades.

I will trust classicbattletech.com forum members under ther same caveats, but not elsewhere.

The ohnly time I was conned was on eBay, once by a seller who only sent half of what i ordered, luckily it was a small loss. The other time was Epic minitures passed off as 40K through dodgy wording and no imagery. I saw through this before I handed out any cash and was warned, and helped by members from Warseer.
with warseers help I managed to convince feeBay to ban the seller, the real prize was to secure my 100% feedback.

A word of warning here, feeBay wont do anything except try to protect their fees. Even when dealing with a proven con who broke sevral rules all mail to the company customer services was returned with patronising macros urging me to talk to the seller. They were not intereted in voiding a trade, that means loss of their commission on the sale, they couldnt be bothered with the workload either. So I got a string of fob-offs. Yeah, like I really want to exchange phone numbers with a scammer. I stuck to my guns, refused to allow any exchange of details and won through, but it was a struggle, even with lots of proof.

While I may not be able to do much in reality if a trade goes sour here I would far rather take my chances with Dakka or CBT than make big trades overseas elsewhere. eBay feedback can be clawed back on a nerw account, I think loss of reputation to the name of a 2k+ poster here who has been on the forums for several years is a far better deterent.

Besides you getan inkling as to who I can 'trust' when you have been on a forums a long time, it all comes down to community.

n'oublie jamais - It appears I now have to highlight this again.

It is by tea alone I set my mind in motion. By the juice of the brew my thoughts aquire speed, my mind becomes strained, the strain becomes a warning. It is by tea alone I set my mind in motion.

Check their friends list, do some research, ask for address, google map them, actually call and confirm who you're dealing with, ask for other trading site information.

Many things you can do - but buyers are at a disadvantage.

I've traded on this site, and have only had one problem.

Agree 100%

But (Mods listen) wouldn't be reassuring for dakka users - especially new ones like me to be able to read about other peoples experiences, how they resolved situations etc??

This is my last post - i agree with everyone that has posted here, also one guy i have traded with said 'don't worry i'll post mine first' - how good is that !!????

It's a great communtity but for that 0.1% that may try to abuse it i think there should be a forum topic for advice.

Peace! Happy trading with you all over the coming years

Oklahoma City, Ok.

i agree with Luna, whoever lives the closet goes and beats the crap out of the S.O.B. that did the scamming.
seriously, you can usually find references on here from others, or on the other trading sites. i tend to go with whoever has the lowest post count ships or pays first. i recently had a trade where they had no references to speak of, but they were also leary about shipping first. so i paid half upfront and the other half once we reached Allderan... i mean when the goods were received.

Some good advice there, alarmingrick.

The topic is up for discussion among the Mod crew (or is that Squad?).

I have to admit though that "Laissez-faire" and "caveat emptor" are pretty much the foundation of the Dakka Swap Shop 'rules', such as they are...
