Afternoon all,
have a few questions relating to Vallejo paints and a dremmel.

firstly, the dremmel - i have heard good things from it but i dont really have much of an idea of what it is (a bit noob, but ) and im wondering if someone could show me what it is, what is it used for, etc? thanks in advanced.

secondly, the Vallejo paints - i have heard ALOT of great things about their product and im wondering (In Australia, or an Australian based website) where i could find it.

thanks for your time

Right, let´s see now...

The Dremel is a powertool that accepts loads of different cutting, drilling and grinding heads, making it very versatile. It´s quite good actually, but I´m not sure I´d want to buy one just for hobby use.

Also, Google is your friend, and wikipedia is the mother of all such information: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dremel

On to your second question, interestingly I can only see feeBay sellers in Australia, but some of our guru´s from down under should be able to tell you more.

Now, if you are only just getting into the hobby, Vallejo may not be for you at first... the colors are nice and all, but they can´t do everything, and personally I think that a combo between GW and Vallejo works best. This is obviously just my take on it, others may have different opinions.

The biggest difference between Vallejo and GW, is that Vallejo is made with finer pigments. So it´s more watery, which is not automatically a good thing, but it is excellent for detail work, gradual shading and such.

Also, in general the Vallejo colors are flat, whereas GW colors are bright and gaudy. Again, preference, and what you are aiming for in your paint job, is important here.

Hope that helps a bit. Good luck.

Hi Gutteridge, Dremel is the company name for a whole range of hand held power tools. I personally have the Dremmel 300 with the Dremelite attachment which is brilliant for modelling jobs where you need fine control. Most Dremel's can be purchased as a starter kit (as was mine) and are way, way cheaper than if buying the bits seperately. My wife bought me mine for Christmas, and to be honest, I don't know how I managed without it!

As Xanthos has already said there are loads of attachments and bits you can buy and the Dremel can be used to perform just about any rotary task from sanding and buffing to engraving, routing, sharpening and of course drilling! I find mine invaluable when converting metal models as I use some very small grinding heads to remove excess metal, form deep recesses and remove unwanted iconography (i.e Ultramarines icons).

Maelstrom games carry the whole vallejo range and will ship to Australia, but the exchange rate might hurt a bit!

Legoburner, Do you know if they sell empty Vallejo dropper bottles...I don't have time to search through the 9 pages they have for vallejo products at the moment

I use my Dremel for grinding metal flashing and such, much like Cypher871 but a few other things I do with mine are drilling holes for magnets. SOOO much faster than a hand drill esp. if you have a lot of stuff that needs mags. I also use mine to take the flash lines off of plastics. I know it sounds crazy but after you get use to using a Dremel(I use mine A LOT for all kinds of little projects) you will develop enough hand control to do it and it beats the hell out of filing excess plastic off. Just put it on the lowest speed you can and go to town. Also though as mentioned I would not get a Dremel just for minis. Make sure you have at least 3 other things you can use it for to justify the purchase of it.

te3b0r, I am intrigued...what 'bit' do you use for removing mould lines...I might give it a go.

I use the 240 bands and the Engraving Burr Cutter 3/32" Shank. The 240 bands for the stuff that can easily by hit like elbows, legs, feet, bottoms of heads ect and the shank for those for hard to reach places. I practiced on junk models first since I just started with 40K to make sure I didnt tear the carp outta my new minis. Also really thinking about getting a cordless one for the sanding just because of the lower RPMs, less chance of screwing things up!

Whereabouts in OZ are you?
What's your nearest capital city?

I know of a couple of stores in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane who stock Vallejo paints.

Dremels (and cheaper clones that do similar jobs) can be bought from Bunnings (hardware).

There's a model shop in Miranda that MAY stock Vallejo paints (haven't been there in a while. It's on Kingsway, near Westfields, going towards Sutho.). Used to get my sheet styrene and brass tube from there when I was a ST George boy.

Otherwise, CBD is your best bet. GoodGames near Central (opposite the Railway sq end, and near KFC as well) or Tin Soldier on York St, one block north and east of the QVB.

Are you talking about hobby co (next to pauls warehouse)? i was there the other day and i didn't check out the painting section <head desk> because i was checking out the military forces for barets but didn't find any

anyway, i don't go to the city much but i have been to QVB so if i do go, shouldn't be to hard to find. thanks for the directions, appreciate it!

Must have changed its name. The only Hobbyco I know is in the QVB in the CBD. I was talking about Vaggs. link: http://www.vaggshobbies.com.au/cgi-bin/index.asp

Used to be a nice little independant focussing on R/c stuff, but had a good selection otherwise.

Hobbyco might stock Vallejo. Didn't get to check last time I was down there. Mainly they have humbrol, Tamiya and a couple of others. I do know both GG and TS do stock them (and brushes).
