Yea, so anyway this guy told me that for space marines you can "make your own chapter" and give them whatever existing chapter rules that you want to. I would very much like to know if this is true. Thanks

LOL. You can paint them how you want. Call them what you want. Create the fluff (story) behind the army you want. But game wise you must follow one of the codex books to play. No making up stats, or special rules, etc....

Sure it's ok, it even suggests it in the codex.
I know plenty of people who do it, me for example!

So just go nuts!!

Can you really make ur own space marine paint scheme and take whatevr chapter rules that you want?

No.

The only Chapters allowed are the ones in the Codices, so Blood Angels, Black Templars, Dark Angels, Space Wolves, Ultramarines (and the ones in the Marine Codex - Raven Guard, Imperial/Crimson Fists, White Scars and Salamanders).

If you make any other type of Marine army and try to use them at a tournament or your local game store, GW takes your models away.

Don´t be so mean H.B.M.C. It´s not like he is asking to play with converted armies or even [gasp]non-GW[/gasp] miniatures.

Oh alright.

Yes, you can play with any army you like. Except that one! Or that one! And God no, not that one either!

you can use choices from inquisitor, and other allies of the marines. you are allow one hq, one elite , one troop , one heavy , one fast attack of your choice to mix and match. in the codex astarters it also has options on what you can take for the army you made up and rules , benefits and hindrances. you can also get chapter approved books that offer lots of options you can push on people you play. one of them has a termi captain that can take a termi squad and upgrade with 50 points of random gear per model, still have to pay for the gear but you can in theory take options not available to termies (grenades) as it states that you may take the points from the army armory not the upgrade options....cheese , but is in a chapter approved book......all the rest is pretty much standard, like the stats and gear options of your marines.....go wild bro, but remember is your opponents choice if he wants to face off against you.

What you can't do is to mix and match rules from different SM codexes to create Teh Ultimate Chapter!!111

What I mean is, you can make your own chapter, call them Void Hunters and use Space Wolves codex but if you used some good rules out of the Blue Marines' codex to cover the disdvantages in the Space Wolves' codex, it would be unfair.

I'm writing a load of fiction. My latest story starts here... This is the index of all the stories...

We're not very big on official rules. Rules lead to people looking for loopholes. What's here is about it.

As long as your marines use the rules from one single codex all is well. Paint them purple, call the Chapter Master Bart Simpson (using Marneus Calgar rules)... no matter.

I have made my SM army with that very thing in mind.

An example would be my marines armed with bolt pistol/chainsword. Some times they are Assault Marines without jumppacks (when I play my entire army using just Codex: Space Marines), sometimes they are Crusader Squads (when I play my entire army as Black Templars) and sometimes they are Bloodclaws (when I play my entire army as Space Wolves).

As long as you use one codex, and one codex only, to represent your entire army, it doesn't matter one bit how they are painted.
