i am of the opion that gloss paints on any miniture just looks crap and unrealistic, i hate seeing a great mini with pretty decent paint job only to be spoiled by gloss. Please end this madness matt is your friend

If you want to make something look wet like say a squigs tongue. But other wise I would agree that it does some what take away from the paint job,but it doesn't make it look too terrible.

i just think that it cheapens the effect. LIke yes i know they arnt real but in real life you wouldnt see soldiers with shiny faces and i will repeat yes i know there not real. gloss has a place but not all over

I hope you didn't paint it with gloss varnish first, that'd taste awful.

im gonna go ahead and say gloss can be used alot and look good.

On tyranids.

I've seen some very nice nids done at my local GW which have been almost entirely glossed. It makes the carapaces look like the shell of a beetle and gives them a more alien look.

On other models i prefere wethered looks though, gloss on a marine is just a nono.

What about for giving gore a nice shiny/visceral look?

I think the problem most people have with it is, that it provides it's own highlights on models and ruins any that may have been painstakingly painted on to the model. That said, If you are painting something all black, it can give an ultra-realistic look to the figure.

Gloss has its place.

Most people just don't know where it is.

What is this habit the young'uns have of biting their thumbs at us, anyway?

Do they just like thumb-biting? Aren't they supposed to give that up in early childhood?

Gloss is fine if used correctly. I agree that using gloss on natural parts of the mini (i.e. clothing, skin, etc) is just bad form but I've seen some pretty neat gloss black 40k Space Marines. Seeing as though brand new or cleaned 40k Space Marine armour is supposed to be shiney I can't see the problem with using it then.

Armies:
(CSM/HH) - Iron Warriors; Death Guard; World Eaters; Night Lords
IG - Vestfalian Expeditionary
Force (Solar Auxilia - HH)
SM - Blades of Inaros (Homebrew)
DE - Kabal of Ouroboros

Hmmmm nids i can see a good application , but with space marines that brings the new question of should they look like they just walked from the forge or should they look as if there in battle and dirty. i think the new shine look can be archived with layering and highlights i think gloss just over does it.

Gloss has it's own (very small) place. I.E. on glass lenses, dripping gore, some power-weapons, armour which has minimal highlights so you don't get that nasty 'double' highlight look. Also in small amounts on wet bases. Anything else I really don't appreciate. Wet skin isn't that shiny in real life, why on a model? huge amounts of armour painted gloss look awaful in my opinion. I too have seen some very nice 'nids with gloss shells and it ruined them. On display fine, but when they're on a table-top without correct lighting the highlights from the gloss overwhel the paint job under-neath and over-ride the details. If you want a shiny bit like blood on an axe I much prefer to mix a little shiny wash into the paint, and apply a wash over the top. It achieves the wet look without being overly shiny and distracting form the overall look.

I use a semi-gloss sealant on all of my minis. I really don't like matte anymore. I hate having a vibrantly colored mini get dulled to the point of suckitude by a matte sealant.

Semi-gloss all the way.

For regular gaming pieces, especially metal ones, nothing beats gloss coat to ensure they stay well painted.

Additionally, I like the tactile feel of gloss minis when you move them around (my shrink is certain that it has something to do with breastfeeding being stopped early as a child).

All the best

Another good place is on the skin of bloodletters, bloodcrushers, and bloodthirsters.

With just the right tone of red and a gloss finish they look sickeningly awesome.

THE HORUS HERESY: Emprah: Hours, go reconquer the galaxy so there can be a new golden age. Horus: But I should be Emprah, bawwwwww! Emprah: Magnus, stop it with the sorcery. Magnus: But I know what's best, bawwwwww! Emprah: Horus, tell Russ to bring Magnus to me because I said so. Horus: Emprah wants you to kill Magnus because he said so. Russ: Fine. Emprah's always right. Plus Ole Red has already been denounced as a traitor and I never liked him anyway. Russ: You're about to die, cyclops! Magnus: O noes! Tzeentch, I choose you! Bawwwww! Russ: Ah well. Now to go kill Horus. Russ: Rowboat, how have you not been doing anything? Guilliman: . . . I've been writing a book. Russ: Sigh. Let's go. Guilliman: And I fought the Word Bearers! Horus: Oh shi--Spess Puppies a'comin? Abbadon: And the Ultramarines, sir. Horus: Who? Anyway, this looks bad. *enter Sanguinis* What are you doing here? Come to join me? Sanguinius: *throws self on Horus's power claws* Alas, I am undone! When you play Castlevania, remember me! *enter Emprah* Emprah: Horus! So my favorite son killed my favorite daughter! Horus: What about the Lion? Emprah: Never liked her. Horus: No one does. Now prepare to die! *mortally wounds Emprah*Emprah: Au contraire, you dick. *kills Horus* Dorn: Okay, now I just plug this into this and . . . okay, it works! Emprah? Hellooooo? Jonson: I did nothing! Guilliman: I did more nothing that you! Jonson: Nuh-uh. I was the most worthless! Guilliman: Have you read my book? Dorn: No one likes that book. Khan: C'mon guys. It's not that bad. Dorn: I guess not. Russ: You all suck. Ima go bring the Emprah back to life.

I *LOVE* gloss. I've even used very tiny glitter on more than one occasion. People who aren't really old school painters tend to like what I do, whereas old schoolers act like using gloss is the worst crime possible. I dun get it. Well, I barely get it how about. The reaction just seems completely disproportionate.

I dip my really nicely painted minis (warboss, nobs) to seal the paint. I know otherwise the paint will rub off from being used ALOT or just people picking them up. My regular footsloggers I dont waste my time.
Other then that I agree that gloss is out of place in most cases

ah, I see. Two-fingered salute is so much more evocative though, to me. Although I used to do archery as a sport.

Although I grew up learning many different hand gestures for offensive things (I knew where the deli was before I knew where the local supermarket was).

Many somewhat innocuous gestures. That'll get you beaten up in some places.

Of course I could use a matte sealer, but I like the really bad ass minis to stand out more. It looks nice IMO
