A guy at the LGS where I play uses gloss on his models and it doesn't look that bad.

Miniature needs high light because the mini is so small its hard to reflect the light properly to show natural shade.

Gloss destroys all of that.

I use gloss on lenses and tongues, and that's about it.
Also on gems, but those don't pop up often on Marines.
It looks tacky pretty much everywhere else.
