So…

I've been fiddling and diddling (is that a word?) around for a month or so now. Trying to get a 1K ork army going. Mainly to keep myself from buying too much of "This looks cool" and then trying to force it into an armylist.

My main focus is something "hordy", fun to play, and not necessarily tournament winning.

So, uhm, here we go.

HQ
BigMek – KFF

Elite
12 Lootas

Troops
29 Shootas – 3 Big Shootas
1 Nob – BP

29 Sluggas
1 Nob – PK, BP

Heavy Support
3 Killa Kanz - Grotzooka x3

Fast Attack
1 Deffkopta - TL Rokkits
1 Deffkopta - TL Rokkits
1 Deffkopta - TL Rokkits

= 995pts

What I'm wondering is that the killer kans might not be "needed". They're really really cool models though, and they can act like a screen for the sluggas while dishing out some damage against troops in the open with their grotzookas. And while protected by the Mek's KFF they might survive long enough for me to get them and my sluggas in CC?

The Deffkoptas are a little troublesome. I really need something to use against lighter armour and heavy weapons teams, but they also cost a lot and are a bit fragile since they will not be used in conjunction with the KFF. Is there a better option? Should I just use two, and equip them with buzzsaws?

All / any opinions appreciated!

I'd drop either the deffkopta's or the kans (probably the deffkoptas never had much luck with them) and use the points gained to make another mob then even the mobs out and give each nob a pk (possibly drop 2 lootas for extra boyz/upgrades).

I agree with this. You can put the koptas back in at 1500 pts or more. Now, as for the kans, I recommend them. At 1500 points and above I play a list of 3x30 boyz and 9 killa kans. It does certainly have its weaknesses (like dawn of war deployment!), but overall it is a fun, fairly competitive list.

Although I cant give much helpful feedback considering im really new to 40k. I can however tell you waht i did since our ideas were similar and we both ran into the same problem.

I'm running
HQ-G Thraka
2x 29 Slugga boys each with 1 Nob with PK
1x 30 Shootas with 3 Big Shootas

and this is where i wanted to run the Kans. I really needed something to dish out anti armor but i couldnt figure out what it was.

I decided to go with 2 Trukks each with 12 Shootas. I figured i could maybe give my squad of 30 Shoota boys 3 Rockets and maybe even the squad in the trukks rockets.

I thought it would be better having numbers instead of trying to mix in a bunch of stuff and hoping it works. Although going against a heavy armored army might not be the greatest, everything else will be overwhelmed by the numbers of the Ork Foot Sloggers.

This prob didnt help but just throwing in a suggestion or 2.

note: i also have 9 Koptas but it seems their to expensive for a 1k army. Nobody else will be bringing to many tanks with only 1000 points to work with. Kill them with numbers.

Thraka whilst nails hard is far to expensive for 1000 points (off the top of my head 22.5% of your points) and really slows whichever unit you put him with (thanks to slow and purposeful). Big Mek with KFF costs less and with correct placement gets your entire army a 5+ cover save minimum and give you more points for more boyz.

Id drop the Nobs completely. Just go with 30 boyz. Pick up a werid boy and run him with the mob of Choppa boyz. Id keep everything else.

6900 and still going

Kans recommended, that's a good thing. I really love those little kans.
The deffkoptas, meh, I hate painting them. So dropping them doesn't feel like a biggie.

Revised list, shortened down;
HQ - Mek, KFF
Elite - 8 Lootas
Troops - Shootas x25 (2 BS) + Nob (PK, BP)
Troops - Shootas x25 (2 BS) + Nob (PK, BP)
Troops - Sluggas x28 + Nob (PK, BP)
Heavy - KillaKanz x3 (Grotzookas)

I could run more kanz, but does that really make the list any better? 3 more kanz is 20 something boyz.

That is an excellent, and fun, idea : ) And something that isn't too hard to try out (feels a little un-orthodox for me to set in stone atm) without buying a ton of new models.

I think 8 lootas is too few. When I use them I like to have squads of at least 10, but I also like to use two squads so they can cover each other and reach more of the field with their awesome firepower. Of course for just 1k two squads of lootas is unrealistic. If youre worried about anti-tank then I'd give the kans rokkits, they have the highest bs in your army, a whopping 3, and is a trio they can put a hurtin on most vehicles, LRs are still a problem, but they're a problem for just about any unit. Definitley keep your nobz and pks, theyre worth their points in gold.

Landraiders, not so scared, not in a 1000pt game. They're there, but what to do, I cant go around being worried about them and build a list to tackle LR's all the time. I guess.

A little more tinkering, now with more lootas.

HQ – Mek w. KFF, Cybork Body
Elite – 12x Lootas
Troops - 19+1 Shootas. 2 BS. Nob with PK+BP
Troops - 19+1 Shootas. 2 BS. Nob with PK+BP
Troops - 29+1 Shootas. Nob with PK+BP
Heavy - 3 KillaKanz. 2 Rokkit, 1 Grotzooka

And 5 points left, for something fun.

This is really similar to my own list at 1,000pts. I run:

Big Mek w/ KFF
12 Lootas
3 x 25 Shoota Boyz, Nob w/ PK & Bosspole
3 x Killa Kan w/ Grotzooka

To make up the last few points I either give the Mek a burna or give the Kanz rokkits and the Mek 'Eavy Armour.

Good idea to put in more lootas... They'll probably get a lot of fire coming their way and you sure wouldn't want them to run off the table should your enemy fire everything at them on the first turn. Looks good to me and I know that at 1,000 my bugs would definitely have a challenge in front of them.

Tired of reading new rulebooks... Just wanting to play.
