First off, I'm basically a rookie when it comes to painting my miniatures. (only been playing WH40K a little over a year)

So i stumbled across this picture the other day and it's given me some ideas for my Tau HQ, but i'm really not sure where to start. my forum searches haven't helped much either.

http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?f=121&t=723414

What i'm hoping to do is get that weathered metallic armor look with bright blue and yellow glows in the armor lines, and that blown out crater/dirt look for the base. I'll be using a Forgeworld Crisis Suit for the model.

So please, any suggestions tips and tutorial links would be a massive help for an aspiring mini-painter.

Thanks.

The armor can be achieved using bolt gun metal + vallejo smoke ink .

The blue glow reflected onto the metal armor can be used with : Enchanted blue . Going towards the center of glow uses Ice Blue , then finally the brightest = White

Yellow uses Blazing Orange , far corners = Blood Red ,
the brightest parts = Sun burst yellow .

Hope that helps!

drinking ale on the ground like russ intended

The Crater is easy you will need some plastic for the bottom of the base and some filler dry wall Spackle will work here.
Turn the base over and slowly cut the top of the base from the under side with the back side of your exacto knife.
Glue the ring to the plastic, with the Spackle make a crater and jobs a good un.
