I used to be a Dwarf player, and was recently reading the codex. How does a slayer progress from a Giant Slayer to Troll Slayer and further?

Surviving and killing progressively larger beasts.

And for what it's worth- he starts as a Troll slayer, then moves on to Giant Slayer. If you look at strictly game terms, it seems that very, very few should ever progress. One on one, most of those slayers don't have much hope against their chose target. Which is kind of the point.

This can also explain why you never see Demon Slayers on the battlefield. Either that, or their rules are crap...

Thanks for clearing that up. However, further reading has revealed that the Dwarfs are now reusing the tunnels that link the holds. Does this mean that they're going to become a dominant force again in the Old World?

I would say no, unfortunately. Like the elves, they were hit hard, and the race of men is now quite dominant (not just The Empire. There's Brettonia, Cathay, Nippon, The Mortals of Chaos, etc.)

However, they are doing what they do best, surviving.

Suppose, but it's a real shame that GW have killed off these two races.

Not killed off, more 'humbled' them and gave them the same feel that the Eldar and Elves have.

GW have definitely given a 'downward spiral' fell to the Dwarfs and Elves.

The HEs are dying quicker than they can be replaced as they aren't having as many kids, also the dragons went to sleep after the magic drained away. Still a hugely powerful nation, just not what they were and other powers are starting to rival them, think Great Britain in the mid 1930s as Germany, japan, USA, Russia are all growing to compete with them in terms of power.

The dwarfs have a besieged feel to them. They have gone from disaster to disaster but doggedly hold on as they are relentlessly swarmed by races that can afford to throw away troops. So the settle down in the lands they hold and defend them with shooting, exceptional troops and armour.

As to the OPs question.

I guess you get your 'rank' according to the biggest thing you have killed.

No idea, its rumoured they will re-realease fantasy at fall 2010 (look in the news and rumours section) so they'll probably release it after that.

As for the slayers, to tidy up, they progess as they find that the monster they kill (troll for troll slayers etc.) is to easy for them to kill and they will never find death this way so move on to tougher monsters.

Well, reading through the old HE books, this isnt the real reason. After the rule of Tethlis they experience about 2000 years of peace. It was during this period they found out they are a dying race, since their numbers didnt increase in the long time of peace.

I think Tolkien's more to blame for this feel for Elves and Dwarves than GW, honestly.

Apparently, they're not. The only High Elf with a sense of fidelity regarding relationships seems to be Tyrion. As well, it's been known for High Elves to use human slaves for things other than just house work and manual labor.
