How's it do against nob bikers? That's for starters.

Or be a Nob Biker army? LOL!

I would say some S8+ weapons would take care of that right?

Nob Bikes seem so easy to deal with now that the shock of them is over and everyone knows what they do and has had time to adjust and respond to them. They can still smash face on most armies out there, but Fatecrusher, IG and Lash lists laugh at them.

I think a good GT list is something that can present solid chances of winning against the overwhelming majority of the armies that will be on the top tables, as well as remain unthreatened by the whacky/not optimized lists you risk facing in rounds one and two. Usually you can get through the first couple of rounds on being a better player though.

So basically identify what the strongest builds are out there and build something that is able to play solid games that gives you at least a decent chance of winning against said builds. Rogue lists do happen, but they are almost impossible to predict, thus hard to plan for. Generally though, if you can handle the strongest lists out there you've got a solid core for your army and if a rogue list does pop up, you sohuld be able to identify what it does and why, then look at your army and find a way to solve the problem with it.

Depends on the points level & the tournament format.

In the UK the points level is 1500 & you need to win your game & victory points help for a deciding ties in overall standings

In the US the points level has been 1750 in the past but most indy gt's this year are at 1850 or 2000, you usually have to either massacre the other player (control 3 more objecitives then him in sieze ground, control BOTH objectives in capture & control, or win by double the amount of killpoints he scored on you) plus complete some secondary objectives for bonus points to get full points for the game.

Indy GT in the US usually set up some sort of simular system with a primary objective, a secondary objective, & a tertiary objective, meaning you have to do multiple things for full points.

So it depends, what kind of GT are you hoping to play in? & with what army?

Dark Eldar Wych Cult 4-1-0
Dark Eldar Kabal 36-10-4

Is there a good online resource to look at GT lists, possibly sorted by date, location, ranking, army, etc?

But does the list have to be a cheesy optimized list to win?

Well, you have to decide what army you want to play.
Top tier are Orks, Chaos, and whatnot.
Go ahead and make a list.

Your two statements aren't mutually exclusive. Most of the top gamers tend to be gentlemen too.

Its hard to be specific as we don't know what tourney you are wanting to enter and what army you wish to field but the following are general tips.

1. Soft scores:
If the tourney you are entering has these make sure you understand them fully before you go and make sure you meet all the criteria - If the rules specify fully painted, having mulitple printed army lists, etc and you haven't done this, you've just thrown away easy points.

2. Play to your strengths:
If you are a naturally cautious player who doesn't like to throw units forward then Blood Angels are not generally going to be the army for you! Think about how you play and select a list that ties in with your 'natural' game.

3. Study!:
Make sure you are familiar with the main rules, know your own army inside out and have at least a passing knowledge of all other armies so you won't get blindsided when the wierd, cranky old Daemonhunters player appears and leaves you going WTF are those?

4. Metagame:
Although tis is the topic of long debate as to what exactly qualifies as the 'metagame' and how relevant it is, I'm using the commonly accepted form here. Know what you're likely to face! Top tier armies are discussed ad infinitum on forums like this. If you go to a tourney this year you are likely to see dual lash, fatecrusher, vet air cav, nob biker and perhaps immolator spam lists at the top tables. Remember you must have a plan to deal with these (and if you can't beat them, join them!).

5. Prepare:
Make sure you have played a lot with your list before you go. Tweak as necessary to get the most out of it and play top lists! If you have to pull a 'netdeck' list off a forum and proxy it with bits of paper. Play it with and against your own army. Make sure the army is 'bedded in'.

Good luck in any case.

Chimera Calvin you have probably been the most helpful overall. I wanted a basic general set of tips like the "holytrinity" thing that I have heard but want something more detailed than that lol. I also am now wondering what is Fatecrusher?

Fatecrusher = Fateweaver with a massive pile (like 20+) Bloodcrushers. Also generally includes a pair of Soulgrinders with tongue and a bunch of plaguebaearers for troops.

Basically just spam the most cost effective unit or vehicle in an particular army. At least that is what the people over at BoLS and Yes the Truth Hurts seem to think. Makes for pretty boring army lists.

Hmm how many GTs have they won though...

Chimera_Calvin has the best post here by far.

BoLS has the lists that will make you look like a total dick but will win you games. YTTH actually has some good lists in it and I think he has some good advice if you read through the rants.

A good comander will kill you with most lists. In truth, make a list and practice practice practice!!!! Run the units and try a LOT of tactics! Try to keep the army the same for every fight (unlike some people who change their army depending on who they are versing which I think is dumb)

So get your list up and try to make it balanced and favored in 5E (aka. mech) Try to run units in different ways and try different strategies with different units and honestly you will tweek it yourself. After every game ask yourself "what can I do better?" : "what did I do wrong?" : "which unit helped me the most?" : "which unit did the least?" : "which unit seemed to be good but needed to be used differently"

Tweak it and just practice, no list will win you a GT (but it will at adeptecon and no one can argue with this, yeah taking a Reaver Titan that you spend all that money on is fair right? O wait... Look at BoLS and you will see some lists that WILL win you games)

He who fights with monsters might take care lest he thereby become a monster and if you gaze for long into an abyss, the abyss gazes also into you

Glad I could help, drummer!

and thanks EzeKK - really appreciated

@tasty - personally, I don't like spam (except the canned meat, of course!! ) although I would always recommend that you have multiple units doing the same thing.

Sort of like a low-fat spam....

Bell of Lost Souls, another internet forum (one of the 'big three' along with dakka and warseer)

They do provide a lot of free resources in terms of datasheets and campaigns but I'd say the threads are more interesting here on dakka (personal opinion, YMMV)

Also, if you played the game with a trusted group and you lost, don't forget to ask your opponent what you could have done to change things up. I've asked opponents in leagues what they think I could have done different after a game, and usually they'll let me know. You can only play the same person once each league (except for the finals, but nobody expects a Necron player to make it there), so they're usually inclined to give me some feedback.
