Is it possible for sm's to be competitive in a 2500pt hard boyz tourney without spamming land raiders?

I keep on hammering out a marine list (mostly vulkan) where I keep it to 'just' 2-3 landraiders and nothing seems to really be coming together.

Thoughts?

Here are a couple lists i've come up with. One has no Land Raiders at all while the other sticks to just 2. See if you can get any ideas from them.

You do not need Landraiders to be competitive, in fact this year Land Raider spam is the best way to get smashed.

There will be far to many lists running 20+ Melta Guns (And I dont just mean IG)

One Land Raider with screening forces will be much more effective than 4 or 5 land raiders running without backup.

Sorry if this brings the thread off topic, but i feel compelled to write in general.

0 land raiders = fine

1 land raider = suicide

2 land raiders = good

3 land raiders = pushing it but it can work if you can still fit in an army

4+ = your playing rock paper scissors not 40k

I hope that helps with how many land raiders to run if you want to be competitive.

As far as a list i'm running 2 in my ard boyz list and it works pretty well.

Landraider Spam isnt competetive at 2500pts.

At 2500 pts, armies tend to have ALL of their toys...that means strong tankbusting at all ranges.

Landraider Spam is effective at lower points levels 1500+ because its tough as heck to take out 2 or 3 raiders at that level with the amount of heavy tankbusting at your disposal.

Yeah, depending on the list i'd say it's best to run 2, 3 tops. Any more than that is going leave you short where you need it. Shane has it right about most of the people having lots of anti-tank at 2500pts. but even last year at the ard boyz i only lost 1 LR per game and even then it only happened once. Landraiders are tough but you need an excellent all round force to take Ard Boyz, or you can pray for perfect match-ups

Well I guess I won't worry about running only '2-3' raiders and post up a list in the army list forum.

One of the things with the metagame is to be ahead of the curve. Spam LRs is sooooooo last year. Most competitive people are packing a lot of melta in their lists now. Taking something that up-ends the metagame always does better. What about Rhino spam? You could have 17 Rhino/Razorbacks on the board (2 HQ, 3 Elite, 6 troops, 3 FA assault squads and 3 hvy for dev squads).

I ran a few more games with it this weekend, trying out the 6 smaller biker squads with command bike squad and it was sick against melta vet IG but had trouble against Mono Tzeentch and Battle Wagon Spam. It does seem to have great potential though. The one Landraider seems to do just fine against anything but Tau as the bikes make it all but impossible for the enemy to get into melta range until its too late.

Ill try to write up a bat rep or two this week. One thing is for sure, its a VERY fun army to play.

I responded to your post in the list forum about it, dont know if you saw it. I'm considering trying a mixed mech and bikes version. Something like 2-3 rhino squads and 3-4 smaller bike squads with a trimmed down command squad.

If you have 17 rhinos/razorbacks you'll get totally killed in killpoints missions, unless they say dedicated transports don't give up killpoints again.
