SO I am moving -again- and after looking at the monumental amount of 40K stuff that I have (19 armies + FW stuff + titans, 3 or 4 HUGE bits boxes, innumerable unbuilt and partially built kits, etc.) I'm feeling a bit overwelmed. After sitting down and collecting myself, I figured where better to go for some advice/ideas than Dakka. So here's the question - Do any of the Dakkaites out there have any suggestions for moving/storing this amount of stuff without building an addition onto the new house? ANY helpful suggestions are appreciated! Thanks!!

I think you need to invest very seriously into a storage system of some sort.
I'd suggest contacting battlefoam or whomever, and trying to arrange for a bulk buy of trays.
I'd ask them to do a custom run of foam trays sized to fit standard stackable bulk plastic tub containers.
It'd totally be worth your time.
And probably theirs.

I think you have to consider how far you're moving them and what your budget is for packing them? With an unfettered checkbook you should just get carrying cases for everything... but I doubt thats the case.

Even on a budget, everything should be boxed for transport. It's more compact, reduces breakage and loss, and stays organized.

Currently, I have everything that is painted stored in a mix of GW foam/carrying cases, Sabol foam/cases and storage tubs. However it is a total nightmare to root through 6 tubs looking for your (insert army that you want to play with here). I'm thinking of a shelving system, so that I can see what is what at a glance. Maybe using clear storage boxes that the storage foam will fit into. I'll definitely look into the Battlefoam stuff.
Thanks & keep 'em coming!

I was going to suggest some of those clear storage totes. But you already said that lol. I had to get all the SM out of my box so I can find my Orks fast. I have no CLUE how you do it lol

I remember some guy on here or another forum, can't remember which, who was a carpenter by trade. He built a chest of drawers with very thin drawers that he could store minis in. Think of the wooden drawer units they use in museums to store specimens, like this:
If you can make something like this, it would be ideal. Failing that, eBay is your friend.
Other than that, I'd suggest investing in something like this:
If you've got the amount of stuff you've mentioned, it probably takes up a whole load of space in your home anyway, and I'm sure your good lady would like it all tidied into one place. The shelves on the left would seem to be the most useful style as they could store GW (or whoever) cases, foam trays without cases, or just models. You can also write on each of the drawers what they contain so you can go straight to the (insert army you want play with here) drawer and get what you want. It also makes moving easy as you just move the furniture item, after taping all the drawers shut and ensuring that all your minis are packed in their foam trays.
Hope this helps.

That piece of furniture is called a map case.
But yeah, get it all on shelves, and organized.

I just recently moved and while I have nowhere near as much as you do, what I did was purchase extra foam trays from army transport and fit in all the models I could. For what was left over, I just used a cardboard box and wrapped stuff up in towels and washcloths and other cloths I was bringing.. and I transported it all myself so I knew just how careful I had to be

One method I have seen Is to use magnetized "bankers boxes" You do have to go thru the trouble of gluing washers to the bottom of your minis, then put a cut-down piece of hardboard in the bottom. Then cover the hardboard with business card magnets. I usually then cut the sides of the box down so that it is only 3-5 inches tall. A single box can carry several hundred minis, if not more, all by itself. here is the one I use http://www.officedepot.com/a/products/590115/Bankers-Box-Recycled-Presto-Storage-Boxes/ Then I just use heavy duty storage shelves to store the boxes in my game room. hope this helps
