I am just starting to create a new chapter of SM and have always been drawn towards the Salamanders for their noble nature but I want to make a chapter of my own. I know that they don't have any known Second Founding chapters but does this mean their gene-seed was never used at all in subsequent foundings? Also, I believe that their black skin/red eyes is caused by the gene seed's reaction to the high levels of radiation in Nocturne's inhabitants, so I assume that any successor chapters would not have to worry about this? Just trying to see what I can and can't get away with painting... Anyways, my over all goal is to create a chapter that shares the Salamander background but has a bit of room to explore the model range, any thoughts?

They were skipped in the Second Founding due to their very low numbers. However that doesn't prohibit their geneseed being used in the 3rd or later foundings. I'd eather use a unifying color, symbol or pattern to tie them back to the Salamanders.

Mechanicum Fleet 2000 1000
2000? (Almost all 2nd ed.)
I think that about covers it. For now.

Well I kind of moved near Toronto, actually.

According to the Lexicanum, they are "possibly" the first founding for two Chapters. I do not know where they get this.

I say go ahead just make the spin off chapter tough/ mysterious.

Just to get off my chest my little pet peeve:
SUCCESSOR CHAPTERS ARE NOT THE SAME AS CHAPTERS THAT USE THE GENESEED

Successor chapters are ONLY those created in the second founding upon the break up of the legions. Nothing else.

There are no Successor Salamander Chapters. This is irrefutable.

Now if you are talking about Chapters that use the Salamanders geneseed, there are a few, but not many. But by all means make a DiY chapter based off them It's not like you are trying to make Female Space Marines...

Point taken on the Successor Chapters. Am I correct that the gene seed would not have the same effect on the skin and eyes as it does on the inhabitants of Nocturne?

No, you are not. It is not the geneseed that causes the mutation, it is a combination of the geneseed and the environment of Nocturne. Of course, geneseed is regularly mucked about with during the inital harvesting progress when they create a new chapter, it could manifest itself in another way or not at all.

Geneseed Mutations are very odd.

Like that of the Blood Angels. Pretty much all chapters that use BA Geneseed can fall to the Black Rage and Red Thirst, except for the Lamenters who do not suffer from the Black Rage at all.

Some mutations come out of nowhere for unknown reasons. Examples are the Black Dragons and Flame Falcons.

Geneseed mutations are crraaazzzyyyy......

On the flip side, they have terrible bad luck

nonsense.

There are no mentioned successors.

The whole chart of successors is dated to M33, so after heresy and not claimed complete by GW.

it is also known that the salamanders had about 7 marines after the heresy. hardly enough to split into chapters

Did say who exactly? Numbers without sources doesn't matter.

Still vulcan agreed to split up into chapters....

No, he agreed to follow the codex astrates in some form. That doesn't mean he had enough numbers to make chapters

No interest providing where you took those "only 7 marines" from ?

And doesn't mean he had'nt the numbers to do so either.
