So I haven’t painted anything in several years, and the fanciest technique I know is drybrushing, and the use of ink(sortof). Back in the day when I was playing with some of my buddies it was the norm to play with unpainted minis. However nowadays I'm playing with an older crowd who have some seriously well painted stuff, and its just become embarrassing to keep showing up with my army as it is. So I've decided to paint up my army in a new consistent scheme. Currently I have about 4 different colour schemes going on since I've bought a good amount of second hand stuff, this hasn’t helped with the afore mentioned embarrassment.

I’ve resolved to end my embarrassment and started out by getting myself a citadel paint set , a bottle of simple green (which I’ve used to strip some of my more atrocious miniatures) and I dug out my sad and dusty brushes. I hope you enjoy following me on my little quest, I hope to learn some new things and hopefully improve along the way.

Pictured bellow I have the base colours for my new paint scheme. The model isn’t done but that’s the direction ill be taking colour wise.

He’s still a WIP I want to touch him up a bit and dry brush a lighter colour on his pants, a light gray maybe. In general I’m pretty happy with him so far, but I wanted his lasgun to be a creamier colour , and I’m not sure about the red winged-skull. I think he could benefit from some ink as well though I’m not really sure to use, any sage advice dakka?

Not bad colours, but I'd dim the red a lot as that does stand out way too much. The gun is a bit too bright, and even pure creme would be too bright in my opinion. I'd go for a light gray, probably matching the helmet. Once the flesh is done that will be the brightest spot on the model, so going for something very muted like a metallic silver or gold where you have red right now would be good. Gold would probably look best with the blue tones on the model.

If you have not got them already, some of the citadel washes will really add depth to your base coat too.

Pretty much what Legoburner said. As for washes (the new inks, but waaay better):
A Badab Black wash would go on nicely over most parts of the model, fatigues, armor, rifle and such. For the skin, try the Gryphonne Sepia, or if you want a warmer "redder" shade, Ogryn Flesh.

As for the metals on the skull, gold with Ogryn Flesh over it sounds really good to me.

I´ve used it on my inquisitor´s hand flamer in my =I=Munda thread, if you want to see for yourself. I use washes extensively, and I think you´ll be surprised at how easy they are to work with.
