okay, back again. I'm still trying to construct a decent Necron list without using monoliths. I think this is doable at 1k points
So My girlfriend's specs are simple:
Use a destroyer lord, she's not really interested in the monolith model (not for 50 bucks),Egyptian theme (I'll probably end up doing them gold w/ blue trim, maybe change out the gauss rods for another color)
My specs:
I could do without pariahs and flayed ones... too costly (both ways) for what you get.

so here's what I got:

HQ:
Lord.............................................................................190
Destroyer Body, Warscythe, Res Orb, chronometron

Troops:
Warriors * 11................................................................198

Warriors * 10................................................................180

Fast Attack:
Scarab Swarm * 6.........................................................132
Disruption Fields

Destroyers * 3..............................................................150

Destroyers * 3..............................................................150

The basic plan of this list is the warriors go find an objective to stand on while the Destroyers support the warriors against tanks and heavy infantry, and the lord teams up with the scarab swarm to make a fast moving counter-assault unit that can give any enemy a headache. List comes in at 1000 points exactly. The chronometron is kinda just thrown in there, but I guess it'll keep the scarabs and lord from being swept if they end up in a combat they don't want to be in. New phase-out count is still 7, but now I'm not too worried. If all my warriors die first, I've lost anyway and I won't mind phasing out. Once again, comments and concerns are welcome!

I'd drop the heavies. They are too expensive for what you get and I have found them to be entirely useless to my Necron opponents.

Wait, NO RES ORB?! WTF is wrong with you?! Are you TRYING to phase out in turn 1?!

That being said, I'll still give you a 0 if you bring more than 5 eldar skimmers. Don't be that guy.

Nice calm, collected and mature way to convey your point there.

@OP:

In all honesty you probably should have a res orb. There are enough high strength weapons around to put a dent in your army early on. The lightning field and phylactery arent nearly as good.

Heavy Destroyers arent good either, but they are the only reals source of anti-tank necrons have, so they are a bit of a necessity. Two should be alright, you shouldnt come up against too many heavy tanks in 1000pts.

If we were to play each other in a tournament, not only would I table you, I would murder you, your family, every woman you ever loved and burn down your house. I mean, what's the point in winning if you allow people that don't take the game seriously to live?

O H I am in the Webway...

I would run the lord Orb / Solar Flare to protect the Warriors.

He who fights with monsters might take care lest he thereby become a monster and if you gaze for long into an abyss, the abyss gazes also into you

While I don't have my codex with me, I believe standard destroyers can only be in run in units of 3 to 5.

Also, let me second the "GET A REZ ORB".

Most failcron players I know have given up on heavy destroyers in favor of the gauss rule. Destroyers glance vehicles (and stop their shooting/moving) FAR more often then heavy destroyers do. Couple that with regular gauss shots and you have somthing worth mentioning as anti-tank. not that this makes failcrons good, but nothing really manages to do that.

yeah, I guess the res orb is a good idea. My only gripe is that the Lord and scarabs won't be close enough to any other necrons for the orb to kick in... after all, I plan on using this unit as a speedy assault group. I suppose the orb would pay for itself if it let the lord himself get back up though. Part of the point of the scarabs is to keep wounds from getting to the lord, especially ones that would deny him WBB.

@ Sarge: yeah, just checked my 'dex. Destroyers only come in units of 3-5. derp.

Personally, I think HD's are an undervalued unit. They carry a lascannon, but can move 12" and fire in the same turn, meaning they're a lascannon that won't get charged in close combat. They're also one of the few things that can effectively deal with terminators in the necron arsenal (it might be wasted shots, but perfect if you have nothing else to shoot at)

Lemme run a little mathammer for a sec, heavy destroyer against destroyer for vehicle havoc. Not typing it out to prove a point, since I know I'm already biased towards HD's:
HD: BS 4, Str 9, AP 2, 1 shot Destroyer: BS 4, Str 6, AP 4, 3 shots
Against AV 10:
H Destroyer: 2/3*5/6= 56% chance of penetrating hit
2/3*1/6= 11% chance of glancing hit
Destroyer: 2/3*1/3 = 22% chance of penetrating hit per shot, 53% chance of one or more of the three shots penetrating
2/3*1/6= 11% chance of glancing per shot, 30% chance of one or more glances
AV 11
H Destroyer: 2/3*4/6= 44% chance of penetrating hit
2/3*1/6=11% chance of glance
Destroyer: 2/3*1/6=11% chance of penetrating hit, 30% chance of one or more shots penetrating
2/3*1/6= 11% chance of glancing per shot, 30% chance of one or more glances
AV 12
H Destroyer: 2/3*1/2= 33% chance of penetrating hit
2/3*1/6=11% chance of glance
Destroyer: Cannot penetrate at this AV
2/3*1/6= 11% chance of glancing per shot, 30% chance of one or more glances
AV 13
H Destroyer: 2/3*1/3= 22% chance of penetrating hit
2/3*1/6=11% chance of glance
Destroyer: Cannot penetrate at this AV
2/3*1/6= 11% chance of glancing per shot, 30% chance of one or more glances
AV 14
H Destroyer: 2/3*1/6=11% chance of penetrating hit
2/3*1/6=11% chance of glance
Destroyer: Cannot penetrate at this AV
2/3*1/6= 11% chance of glancing per shot, 30% chance of one or more glances

So it seems the destroyer edges the heavy destroyer at AVs 10 and 14, but at every other armor value the strength of the Heavy Gauss cannon is to much. However, I don't know if the 15 points extra is truly worth it... If I free up enough points, I might swap out my HD's, phylactery and lightning field for a res orb and two normal destroyers and 40 points to play with. I'll update the list in a sec
