Going through the forums leads me to dead ends, going to GW shows that they seem to be expunged from the records, with no warhammer annual books (which I hear had the rules), nothing on the GW site in terms of the store, FAQ page, or anywhere for that matter. The only thing I can find there is some models in the collectors range.
Wikipedia has them listed still with some information, but again links lead to the main GW page.
Are Dogs of War extinct? Where they devoured by Tyranids? Why does GW not have any info on them besides in their older rule books?
Can anyone help?
DoW are unique in that their individual units were designed to be mercenaries, i.e. to be added to other armies. A long time ago, mercenaries and allies were considered fun. That was before tournaments sucked all of the “fun” out of WFB, and made it “serious” (and deadly dull). To sell more regiments, the
DoW could also be combined into an incoherent hodgepodge army that was inherently weak. But, with mercs not being allowed in tournaments (Heaven forbid Chaos get a small cannon!), and the
DoW regiments being all-metal and a pain to revamp, and Tilea being basically another human army,
DoW were left to languish. They never got an army book in V6, and were kinda, sorta written out of the later army books. They did get a boost with the addition of Ogre Kingdom mercenaries, mostly to sell Orgres.
So, they don’t really need the Squat treatment, because they’re designed to be added to “normal” armies. But, as interests wanes and the molds wear out, they are indeed slip-sliding away. DO NOT make
DoW your first and only WFB army (
BTW, in case you ignore this advice, I will sell you my fully painted
DoW army). Ironically, the army you choose instead, Tomb Kings, may also have a cloudy future.
