Without mathing the damn thing, I have two different types of lists with the same models.
The first is a cybork list with 30 grots and/or boys being used to swamp big things until my warbaoss and Nobz get stuck in (they sometimes kill things too!). Lobbas tend to wipe out anything that can generate the necessary hits to provide a real threat to 33 invulnerable saves. A Deff Dread sometimes rounds it out. This list is dumb, but entertaining to play.
Second, and more competitive, a speed list with grotz/boyz. 10 Stormboyz and a Nob (getting more at some point), 3 Deffkoptas with Buzzsaws and Twin-linked rokkits (shoot and charge on the outflank, getting more of these soon too). Then Nobz and Lobbas because, well, I have them.

In a Society in which there is no law, and in theory no compulsion, the only arbiter of behaviour is public opinion. But public opinion, because of the tremendous urge to conformity in gregarious animals, is less tolerant than any system of law. When human beings are governed by "thou shalt not", the individual can practise a certain amount of eccentricity: when they are supposedly governed by "love" or "reason", he is under continuous pressure to make him behave and think in exactly the same way as everyone else.

I'm not going to give you the rundown on my army list because everyone deserves their own flair, but I'll give you some sound advice:
Orks can do anything that any other army can do and do it better than they can. However, they cannot do everything that any other army can do. Make sense? If you make an ork assault army, they'll out-assault any other army in 40k. If you make a shooting army, you can outgun IG or Tau. If you go foot-slogging, or mechanized, or kan-wall....all those options make you a completely awesome army, but there's a catch. You can only do one of them at a time with an army list.
If you combine a mechanized and a foot-slogging list, you're going to lose. If you have part assault, party shooting, you're probably going to lose. Your strength is in being able to pick something and be completely awesome at it. So before giving you advice on where to go next with your army, you need to pick a theme and build around it. If you want a bike army, or a shooting army; an outflanking army, mechanized, assault, figure out what your playstyle is and start building your units and armylist around that idea.
THAT is the strength of Orks.
When you decide what you want your army list to be, start by explaining what your intent is, then post an army list along those lines and we'll work from there and make suggestions.

This is right.
The only thing I have to add is that if you want an all bike force your probably going to be Nob Bikerz. In that case, it's going to be non-origional. A lot of people run it and its very good. If you want to be new and your own army, then taking non-nob bikerz or doing an 'Ard Boy army would be a great thing and nice and new.

Dashofpepper speaks truly in both of his posts.
Here's one of the lists I run
Warboss w/ cybork body, eavy armor, big choppa
Big Mek w/ KFF
8 individually equipped nobz
Battlewagon w/ Kannon, big shoota, deathrolla, RPJ grot riggers
11 burnas
19 shootas
20 shootas
12 boyz in trukk w/ a nob with bosspole, PK
12 boyz in trukk w/ a nob with bosspole, PK
12 boyz in trukk w/ a nob with bosspole, PK
Battlewagon w/ Kannon, big shoota, deathrolla, RPJ riggers
Battlewagon w/ Kannon, big shoota, deathrolla, RPJ riggers
Battlewagon w/ 2 big shootas, RPJ and grot riggers.
Everybody rides. The Non deathrolla wagon houses the Mek and 19 shootas. The Boss rides with the Nobz. All the vehicles are obscured due to the KFF. I'll post pics Monday when I get my camera back.

So I must say at the very start that points are very tight trying to maximize and squeeze in as much as possible. The tactics involved in this list are very simple you simply run at the enemy at full speed every turn
Mek with KFF 85
Mek with KFF 85
Elites
12 lootas180
12 lootas180
I could take out two models from each squad to free up 60 points to spend elsewhere. Or alternatively I could simply have one squad 15 models to free up even more points
Total 360
Troops
Deff Dread Dreadnought 2 skorcha 85
Deff Dread Dreadnought 2 skorcha 85
not enough points to equip these guys with anything more
30 shoota boyz, nob PK, 215
30 shoota boyz, nob PK, 215
30 shoota boyz, nob PK, 215
If I could find the points I would equip these guys with 3 big shooters in each squads
Total 815
The backbone of the army 90 Boys
Killercan 3x120 grotzooka
Killercan 3x120 grotzooka
Killercan 3x120 grotzooka
currently cannot afford rockets would need to find points possibly could make them cheaper by big shooters etc.
Total 405
Total 1750

Now this may just be my own foolish whimsy, but it seems to me that people under-utilize the kan as an anti-tank. A bs 3 str 8 shot, especially in squads of three gives you a threat at range and in cc against tanks. They are more survivable than the deffkoptas, which will usually only get 1 or 2 rounds of shooting in before theyre blown out of the sky. Paired with a KFF I don't understand why these aren't taken in more ork sloggin forces as an anti-tank choice.

Unite,
I'm just starting to put together my ork army and am in the research phase so I may be wrong here,
but it seems like the only anti-tank capability here is in the assault phase. That scares me a bit.
I think you may have trouble against guard lists with bunches of Russes or LR spam.

Yeah my Nidz were on the receiving end of the shooting from Dartorn's list and it can be quite painful. If I ran my marines or IG then the rokkits and Nobs would have been able to help pick the vehicles out.

Dash,
Have you won Ard Boyz? Gamesday? Are you Phil Kelly? You seem to look down on anyone who tries to do anything other than what you prescribe as the best way to run orks. If you are the end all be all of orkdom then why have a site like dakka to discuss things like ork lists and such? I think looking at all the different lists could spark an idea that might work or a new tactic that hasn't been thought out.

Unfortunately, I haven't been to any of those events. I didn't know about them. However, I *am* the end all, be all of orkdom (in my humble opinion of course) and I plan on using the first round of 'Ard Boyz this weekend to attempt to prove it. We'll see how that goes.
Feel free to to away with your condescending tone; I don't prescribe any army list, or particular tactic, or think that there's one particular way that Orks must be run. There are a *LOT* of ways to play Orks. My advice is consistently...CONSISTENTLY and ALWAYS the same: Pick one of those ways to run them and run with it. Don't try mixing and matching playstyles into one list. That's absolutely sound advice for any army list and especially so for Orks.
Sorry that you have such thin skin for criticism and are offended by things that shouldn't make you blink twice. Either dig down deep and find your manhood, or leave the forums and find a venue that doesn't require you to interact with other adults who have opinions. My suggestions for your new modeling hobby:

we roll more dice.
But, I don't think orks are going to 'out shoot' IG's shootiest. I also disagree that each list must be completely assault or shooty oriented, I think it makes more sense (especially > 1500 pts) to win the game with an assault but to prepare the way for the assault with shooting. Lootas won't win you a game, but they'll protect the rest of the army so it can.
