Subject: Just how killy is a land raider?

Well I play WH and I'm going to be allying in some GK's and maybe a DH Inq. I really like the idea of taking a land raider with the inq and popping the gk's in there.
It is a lot of points though all together. I'm not expecting the land raider to be a portable holy gold mine but I'm trying to find out just how well worth it is the 250 (not to mention the cost of the inq squad which may be tied in with it).
I'm building a mech list and my idea was to run the land raider in the front with its 14 av and the gk's inside. springload the gk's out and then have my rhinos and immos pull up and sisters come out to unload with bullets and heavy flamers.
It seems like it would be fun. In my gaming experience I've never faced a land raider. I've taken down the ork vehicle (the trukk i think?) with 14 front av with an exorcist before though. although that is open topped.
So my question is dear Dakka, will it pay off its price? Or is one by itself just not enough (bear in mind it will be leading a whole convoy of vehicles rhinos probably an immo or two and a chimera, just nothing as strong as itself)? Thanks everyone!

The primary armament of a Land Raider is the assault unit that you put inside of it. If you understand that, then you're on your way to figuring out whether or not a Land Raider is 'killy' enough.
As a gun platform, two twin-link lascannons and a twin-link heavy bolter are most assuredly not worth 250 points.
Keep in mind that in 5th ed, every decent army is able to kill a Land Raider with ease. Ease. It's all about how well you protect it until it unleashes its assault payload. If you figure out how to do that well, then a Land Raider is probably a sound addition to your army.

I don't know a lot of armies that can kill easily a land raider before it's to late , melta being probably the best choice then you'll be stuck close enough for what's inside to be a problem.
My biggest problem with a landraider is that it's extremely predictable.

And what's a Godhammer pattern LR?
I've started taking a *LOT* more anti-tank simply because everyone is taking so much mechanized stuff and because I see so many frakkin' land raiders.
I'll be toting a full complement of tank-bustas in 'Ard Boyz in addition to my normal Str9 and Str10 vehicle killers.

"Used right" means using cover, shooting at priority targets with the best weapon to use against that specific target, moving when you need to, staying put when it benefits you to do so, and most importantly of all, using the cargo as it was meant to be used.
And a God-hammer Land Raider is a standard Land Raider with two twin-linked lascannons. In 1st and 2nd Ed 40k, the lascannons were known as "God-Hammer" pattern lascannons, hence God-Hammer Land Raider or GHLR.
Calling a GHLR also helps differentiate it from LR Crusaders (LRC), LR Redeemers (LRR), and Leman Russ Battle Tank (LRBT), since LR can mean a lot these days.

I've had good results running normal LR, each with a unit of grey knights inside w/incinerator. Add a Brother Captain with retinue and 2 psycannons, and thats my 1500 Daemon hunters list. I only run it if I feel like being a jerk. You play it very conservatively, not rushing forward. You hide as best you can, and give the termies cover from what anything they are not currently shooting at. When the enemy closes, you can use the GK as a flame assault unit, and even pile the GKT into the combat. Hopefully you popped all transports, so they get strung out and don't overwhelm you. GKs are good in combat, but die to massed charges.
What I've found about Land raiders is this: 1 is an annoyance easily dealt with. 2 is a serious problem. 3+ is overwhelming. Remember, DH at 1500 can bring 5! I've never done that particular cheese, but its very tempting.
To the original poster: It might be better to take a native DH list, allied with sisters. You can take more land raiders, and you don't have to do the whole switch transports at the beginning of the game. Keep in mind Grey knights don't let non grey knights ride the LR.

Dead killy. I dont understand sourclams post- What is a strategy for easily dealing with AV 14. Most armies strategies work less than a quarter of the time, I would hardly say that is an easy time. I do agree that it is not worth 250 points for its offensive weapons alone. I do have to second notabot's concept- everything counts in large amounts; but considder 3 LRs will be half of your army in 1500 pts, and probably wont make their points back.
A side note, I recommend against using GKs as an assault force. It is not as though they can not do it, Stormbolter shots followed by WS5 S6 weapons tend to get the job done, it is just for the points they aren't worth throwing away in combat. Against tau, or guard, they may be worth it because you will not likely lose many men, but against MEQ, Orks, or nidz you will lose men in combat, at 25 points a pop, that will add up quickly. At a range you will out shoot most every unit, thanks to the Storm bolter, and receive little damaging return fire.

Land raiders can be very killy used correctly. Jeffers is 100% correct. But its also the units inside that make the differance. I think sourclams is referring to the amount of firepower an army dedicates to down a LR, not the strategy. Typically at range it takes an average of 9 lascannon shots to disable a LR (stun, immobilise or destroy). That makes armies focus on it to begin with, put a killy unit in it and you have a fire magnet. Be aware that the LR will probably not make it through the game if you do not use positioning to block fire lanes against it. But if your smart you will use it to sheild and to draw fire away from your more vulnerable units. Heres a tip: use the LR to shield the GK from enemy fire when they crush the unit they are enaged with. That limits collateral damage when they get out of combat and if they massacre and get a good roll they can embark.

I'm referring to 5e's overwhelming presence of melta-equivalent weapons. Massed AV14 is tough for any arm to deal with, save for a select few. A single Land Raider, however, is killed by just about everybody with ease.
