I. Cannot. Sleep. I only got an hour of sleep on saturday, and no sleep last night. I don't know why to be honest, My bed's warm and comfortable, my pajama pants aren't getting stuck in my asscrack, and I haven't been drinking coffee past 6 PM. What's keeping me awake? I think I've got too much flying around my head at the moment. I've got my religion, a ton of schoolwork, doubts about my personal safety (the bogans down the road have taken to waving knives at me when I walk past), and, as always, I'm worried that someone's going to invade someone else and cause another war again. I can't clear this stuff out of my head. I do everything I can to relax; I paint my Warhams, I have hot baths, I eat chocolate, I bang my head on the desk (yes, it works, sort of), and I fantasize about women (hey, it's better than nothing). What should I do? This lack of sleep is driving me nuts and I can't concentrate at school. I'm so damn mentally busy all the time. I briefly considered going to extremes and smoking, but I figure if I want to commit suicide, I can just jump off a high building. Besides, I've seen what smoking does to your body... yeesh.

People are like dice, a certain Frenchman said that. You throw yourself in the direction of your own choosing. People are free because they can do that. Everyone's circumstances are different, but no matter how small the choice, at the very least, you can throw yourself. It's not chance or fate. It's the choice you made. |

Fact: most people who claim insomnia think they can't sleep, rather than they actually can't sleep.
As with anything, the more you think you can not, the less you will.

Ah. Exercise is something I really can't find time to do. I'm actually too paranoid to walk the dog after school anymore, since it's armed bogans one way, and a highway the other way. Neither are smart places to go when it's dark. Oh yeah, and it's winter here. Tasmanian winters are fething freezing cold and icy rain will always manage to get into your coat. That, and it gets dark by 5 PM. You don't go outside in the dark here.

Either keep day dreaming of women or,build a bomb shelter for when one of two two things happens:
A)The world is thrown into another war.You will have a safe place to hide and think about women.Plus Nuclear fallout shelters are cool.
B)For when those "bogans" assualt your house. You will a safe place to hide, and think about women.
Aaaaah...the dirty mind of a teenage male.Isn't it a wonderful thing?

i'm not proud of this, but a few months ago I had the same problem. In desperation, I raided my downstairs, hoping I would find an old book or something in the basement.
I instead found in the garage a big Mike's Hard Lemonade crate. I will say this. Hard Lemonade and Hard Cranberry helped me get to sleep. I would advise you
to be very careful though, because chugging is not a good idea, even if you're doing it so your parents don't find out.
As for dealing with those nasty bogans, I would advise you to see if there are any trees that need to be cut down. If so, invest in a good hatchet. Proceed to walk, in broad daylight, and at night, with that hatchet. Now, proceed to chop said trees, until you have felled them. When done, chop trees into managble sizes, and get a wheelbarrow. Let them see you doing all this. When chopping, deliver swift, powerful strokes. When you have doen this, buy a watermelon, and place it on one of the stumps. Proceed to show the bogans what happens when they mess with a man who uses a hatchet.
It worked for when i was having trouble with ghetto rats. Nobody messes with a crazy white boy wielding an axe. Nobody who likes their penis at least.
Now as for exercising, this is just that. Obviously, you may need permits, and you can check to see if the people who live near the bogans but aren't bogans need it cut down. You can charge a pretty penny for this.
As for Tasmanian winters, try Pennsylvania. Wind that whips through your coat when you walk outside, snow that freezes in about three hours, and my school is located on a mountaintop. School starts at 0'dark hundred, further bringing down the temp. DOn't bitch to a Pennsylvania man about cold. We don't take kindly to others stepping into our territory.
Thinking about woman is good, maybe you might try men? Who knows, maybe your mind secretly wnats to think of Adam Levine?
I could be wrong. I usually am.

Focus on one thing at a time. If you are stressed about too much crap then just focus on one thing at a time. I've been down the road of teen angst. Simplify your life. If you are worried about invasions and 2012 then quit watching tv. Quit thinking about women. You're a teen still. Women shouldn't be a serious issue in your life till you turn 20. Spend some time painting minis and playing other games. Don't drink coffee, you should still have enough energy in your young body. Drinking coffee is like turning the amp to 11.
Exercise and read some books. Start listening to classical music. Do everything you can to focus on the better things in life. I used to have some issues with sleep and a lot of my issues were based in fruitless worrying. Focus on the things that you can actually manage. If some kid down the street is waving knifes at you then quit walking by them.
If you are a person of faith then pray and ask that God will help you find peace. If you can't do it on your own talk to your preacher, priest, whoever and meet with him/her regularly.

Also you can workout in a room (you people get your mind out of the gutter). Free weights, calisthenics, araebics, shadow boxing/kickboxing. When I was working for a company on a contract basis i was living out of motel room for six months. I used a motel wooden chair for my weights. Worked well.

the only way I've been able to get OVER insomnia (this is not an immediate method, but it works for me) is to go to sleep, or at least try to go to sleep at the same time every night, until your body has a rhythm. It's fine to go to sleep at 10 every weekday, and 2 in the morning on weekends, but if I screw with that schedule I can't get to sleep for at least an hour, and sometimes not at all. also, alcohol puts me right to sleep. dunno why, perhaps because its a depressant, but it does help, as the guy who decided hard lemonade was a good plan. I wouldn't suggest beer, but rather something harder, otherwise you're probably going to wake up in the night.

I agree with this 100%. I try and get to sleep at around ten-ish every weeknight, ten thirtish on weeknights.

Hard lemonade is pretty much the best one I've used. Whiskey burnt my fragile teen gullet, beer made wonder 'Is this piss?". Vodka and cherry ginger ale though... i enjoyed that. My brother has tought me "It's quantity, not quality little man." As such, the 24 count crates have more then enough, even when it's just Mike's Hard.As I've said, chugging Mike's Hard is a bad idea. It only works when drunk at a reasonable pace.

From the wise words of our own Tasmanian Devil(Cheese):
Bogans are the Australian version of rednecks. They've got that annoying aussie accent you hear on American cartoons and are generally dirty, smoke fags, smoke pot, and live in run-down wooden houses with untrimmed lawns and peeling paint. Hoons are idiots (usually young men) who drive around with the pedal to the metal doing wheelies and yelling out the windows at pedestrians. May or may not be relatives of bogans. Neither are pleasant to deal with, and they're very real stereotypes. -Cheese
Hope that clears it up for you.

Yep, that about sums them up.
Bogans come from the lower socio-economic areas, tend to have at least one long term benefits receiving parent and no suitable role models. For some reason, many embrace the "gangsta ethos".
Hoons tend to be the male bogan, given an automobile. They like to do them up (to be "fully sik!" - sorry, but a $500 car with $3000 mags and low profile tyres is still a piece of crap $500 car) and do things like illegal street race.

I had insomnia, and it sucked. just about ruined my career before i figured out what was wrong. This was due to underlying depression, which was significantly helped when i found a meditation technique that allowed some creative output - in short, painting models. Its quiet, keeps you focused and calm, and keeps your brain from doing circuits on other things. I started in 40k shortly after being diagnosed with depression and it helped heaps (I got the idea from a mate who suffered and took up making model boats).
the other advantage, if you suffer from anxiety depression, you generally feel out of control, and unable to acheive anything. Painting each model gives a sense of achievement, and a sense of completion. The same goes for finishing a squad, an army etc. its basically positive affirmation via your hobby.
See, this is a 40k related thread!
It wasnt only 40k tho, I also used some of the following techniques:
http://www.sleepaus.on.net/insomniainformation.html
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy ( CBT) Treatment is about making both behavioural (doing) and cognitive (thinking) changes to your life and sleep. They are not easy but they work!
TRY:
Reducing the time you spend in bed to match the time you sleep (is called sleep restriction). Many people compensate for poor sleep by spending more time in bed, to give themselves more time to fall asleep or go back to sleep. Unfortunately this behaviour leads to even worse sleep. Choose and keep the same getting up time no matter what your sleep has been like the night before - this will help to re set your brain clock on a daily basis.
This was critical for improving my insomnia - sleeping in is a bad idea - get up same time every day.
Getting up and going to another room if you are unable to go to sleep or go back to sleep with around ¼ of an hour. Read or listen to music in dim light. When you are feeling less tense and more comfortable go back to bed and see if you can "let go" and let sleep happen. You MAY need to do this a number of times a night and for a number of nights to get your sleep back into a better pattern. Then let bed be a place where you go to when you are feeling comfortable and sleepy not a place where you are trying hard to go to sleep or are awake tossing and turning and worrying.
There is lots of evidence that you should only use bed for sleeping (if your not in a serious adult relationship anyway). reading, watching TV in bed associates these activities with the location, making it less 'automatically restful'.
If there is an underlying medical or mood condition, such as depression, get some help from your GP which will also reduce some of the insomnia symptoms. Psychological assistance with stress management, relaxation and awareness of unhelpful thoughts are key factors in a "retraining in sleep" as can attention to simple environmental factors (comfortable mattress, being too hot, too cold, wearing earplugs because of noise). Information and education about sleep and expectations about sleep will help you to understand what you can do yourself to improve your sleep. Collectively these factors outlined help in promoting healthy sleep. Recent research has shown these treatments together increase deep sleep more than sleeping tablets alone. Learning to sleep by what you do and letting go of worries at night will increase sleep confidence.
Ah yes, dont underestimate medication.
Be aware how unhelpful thoughts about sleep can make you feel more worried and concerned about your sleep resulting in even more pressure as you try harder to sleep. Putting the behaviour changes in place and deciding " I can at least give this a go" is an important first step and can be followed by such statements as "Maybe I do sleep a little better some nights!" This is a more helpful statement and "Maybe I don't need to worry as much about my sleep". It takes time and requires a number of changes in not only what you do but in how you think - but it works long term and that is most important.
This was the hardest - I struggled with 'not sleeping because I stressed about not sleeping!'
And cos I work at the uni, I did a quick search on the system :
