Has anyone used those textured spraypaints to make bases? They are supposed to simulate rock i beleive.

A few of the options looked very promising. In particular a black one with white specs looked perfect for an ash theme, also there were a couple that looked very good for dessert themes.

You're talking about the fancy sprays you buy in hardware shops for decorating? Yup, well worth a try, but read carefully the instructions - some aren't designed for the wear and tear of models scraping over the surface. Of course, you'll probably want some sort of matte spray over the top anyway - most of those sprays are glossy - so that sould also help protect the surface.

I think he meant for the bases of the models themselves, Clang.

It could work, but you'd have to do something to cover the sides of the bases. Textured sides always look horrible.

Of course tape would be the best way to go, but it might be hard getting it exact.

Hmm... I have absolutely no idea what this product is. I am thinking some type of foam paint? Try it out, although I can't imagine it being better than something like milliput, or much cheaper for that matter.

i beleive it was just under 8 dollars canadian for a spray can. more than enough for the bases of an army

i will probably pick some up when i get around to basing what i have, and even quicker if i can find a summer job in this economy :(

when i get it i will post pics

i could probably just wipe the sides off before they dry, and then paint a suitable color afterwards.

uhhhhh i know exactly what your talking about.... ive used the exact spray on some plasticard and it came out HORRID... maybe it was cause it was plasticard tho... but it didnt look like textured at all... was supposed to make it look like thrashed and battered metal... i got more of a shiny silver look... >:l. try it on some small unused bases first... they are kinda rough... more then plasticard at least so try it and post it... i like the idea

Looks a bit gimmicky to me. Probably works on some surfaces well though, I would definitely compliment the color with a appropriate primer.

well if its on the bases he shouldnt need primer i wouldnt think... its already black and paint doesnt come off em easily anyhow... but yeah, i dunno what color your using either... so its true i suppose that you mite need primor... what color you lookin at?

i was thinking of the sand colored one (the big one in the link) because looking at it in the store it looked almost identical, perhaps a bit lighter than most of the sandy bases you see people make. Figured just spray it on, add some static grass, and it could be a nice easy base

I textured a gaming table with one of those a while back. It worked really well (I can't remember what brand I got, but none of the stuff got scrapped off).

I used it for the craters that GW sells. Still haven't finished everything I'd like to do to them, but it helped keep models from sliding off the terrain if you breathed on them.

In my experience with these types of sprays, you would have to spray several coats to build up any real depth. When doing that I'd be afraid there wouldn't be a lot of deviation from the average depth.

It'd be worth trying I think. A mix of that with some actual rocks would be great though IMHO.

Vallejo do a range of pumices which you can just paint on to your base for the same sort of effect. See the infantry pics in my flames of war project log link in my sig for an example of what the sand-style one looks like. There are 4 or 5 different grades and they come in gigantic tubs that will easily do a whole army.
