Too funny not to share

Of course you have to be really, really into the study of Chinese censorship to get a lot of it.

This one's even more obscure

"No! Hang on brother!!" Altharius could feel the warmth slip away from his dear sibling's hands

Tethesis's reached out his bloodied arm to Altharius's face.
"I..I have one final request"
Altharius leaned close to listen, tears welling in his once bright eyes.
"make sure th..they put my soulstone in a tank... it'll be... real fethin' cool"
"Yes, you're gonna be the most fethin' cool tank!!" burning hot tears streaked down Altharius's face, as he held his brother's soul in his grasp.

Green Dam is a new Chinese censorship program they are required to include with all PCs sold on the mainland after July 1.

SUpposedly to protect kids from pr0n.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Green_Dam_Youth_Escort

It monitors not only your web brousing but also your word priocessor and other functions. And, this being Red China, it also blocks political content. In fact the list of barred political content is longer than the list of banned pr0n words.

And this being capitalist China it turns out most of the code was priated from a US firm.

Tip of the hat to www.danwei.org for coverage, http://www.danwei.org/net_nanny_follies/green_dam_girl.php

Chinese internet users have adopted the Japanese trend of creating anthropomorphic representations of software (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OS-tan), usually cute girls, and added their own, Green Dam girl.

As with the Japanese OS-tans Green Dam Girl’s outfit is loaded with symbols and puns.

Here's a generic GDG

http://www.hecaitou.net/?p=5770

She carries rabbits (symbol of Jinjui software) a bucket of either black ink or soy sauce to blot out unhealthy information, a red armband, the key to the internet and army cap with a ‘river crab’ badge.

'River crab' is a homonym in Chinese for 'harmony' which is a euphamism for censorship ('my website has been harmonized).

In this image

She's leading away a 'mud grass horse' in chains. 'Mud grass horse' is homonym for F*** YOU in Chinese and is a symbol of evading censorship.

And in this one:

She's 'inspecting' windows XP.

So yeah, funny stuff. For like the couple of dozen people in the world who follow this issue closely enough to get the jokes.

But they had me on the floor.

China backs away from censorship software

Posted Thu Jun 18, 2009 1:45pm AEST

The Chinese Government has backed away from a new law that would have made it compulsory for all new computers sold in the country to include censorship software.

The Green Dam Youth Escort program is designed to block pornography, but also gives the Government the power to censor other websites it considers harmful - including those with political content.

But now an angry backlash from some of China's 300 million internet users has changed the Government's mind.

State media is quoting an unnamed Government official as saying the software will not be compulsory and describing negative public reaction to the plan as "a misunderstanding."

American software maker Solid Oak is preparing to sue the Chinese makers of Green Dam Youth Escort for copyright infringement.

The Chinese company, Jinhui, is denying it stole the software.

It looks like you're in the clear.

People are like dice, a certain Frenchman said that. You throw yourself in the direction of your own choosing. People are free because they can do that. Everyone's circumstances are different, but no matter how small the choice, at the very least, you can throw yourself. It's not chance or fate. It's the choice you made.

Right now the Chinese Government has 'clarified' that computer makers only need to provide CDs and that no one is required to use it.

So this may quietly disappear.

The itnersting thing is the @##$storm they kicked up. Even the state-owned press is chiming in about what a bad idea this is.

that's what they get for messing with pr0n. I mean how often do I need to check on 'Fr** T*b*t' (edited so as not to trigger the great firewall's keyword scans) or 'May 35'? Take them away, and even I won't notice too much.

But take away my pr0n? Now it's on!

But still... let me tell you by 2014 Green Dam v5 is going to be on every computer in China and will be exported to Russia, Iran, Saudi Arabia and Cuba.

Internet censorship is busy not working in Australia and it probably won't work in China either no matter how hard they try.

If the Aussies were willing to put 30,000 people on it, have all external internet links go through one server and to jail bloggers it would.

But they're a bunch of lightweights

The reason why Green Dam was introduced was because the Great Firewall is easily circumvented by anyone who wants to.

All of that wouldn't stop people installing satellite downlinks to get unfiltered internet.

No sat dishes allowed in Red China.

TV sat dishes are only for international hotels/housing compounds (ie not for Chinese folks only expats like me), and internet sat dishes are banned, banned, banned.

But the pr0n must flow!

I bet people can work something out if they really want to. The biggest problem is probably getting a credit card to pay for the account.
